You can give a YouTube production team access through YouTube Studio channel permissions, so each person uses their own Google Account instead of sharing the owner’s sign-in details. Choose a named role based on whether someone needs to administer access, publish content, operate streams, moderate in Live Control Room, or only observe; YouTube does not offer custom per-action roles.
Managers and Editors can manage live streams and chat or moderate in Live Control Room, while Viewers cannot operate streams or moderate there. The right assignment depends on the work each teammate needs to do, and some actions may not be available to delegates on every platform or surface.
How YouTube channel permissions work
Channel permissions let an owner invite people by email and assign access levels in YouTube Studio. YouTube says granting permissions is safer than sharing a password or other sensitive sign-in details. Use each teammate’s own account, grant only the access they need, and verify required actions in Studio before a live event.
If your channel is linked to a Brand Account, YouTube provides a process to migrate delegated access to channel permissions. The Brand Account’s primary owner must start the opt-in. Existing Brand Account users are copied into Studio, but the owner must set a permission level and send invitations. Brand Account ownership and channel-permissions roles are separate: an Owner role in channel permissions cannot transfer channel ownership.

Compare YouTube channel permission roles

These are grouped roles, not custom permission settings. For example, YouTube does not provide a role limited to restarting a stream but not ending it. Treat any team allocation as a practical recommendation, and check the role matrix and relevant Studio surface before assigning a task.
Choose roles for your live team
Match the role to the work, not just the person’s job title. A team member who both administers access and operates streams may need Manager. A producer who publishes and operates streams but does not need to control team access may fit Editor. Someone who only needs to observe can use Viewer; use the limited variants when revenue data should be excluded.
YouTube documents that Managers and Editors can manage live streams and chat or moderate in Live Control Room. Viewers cannot use the stream key, edit stream settings, go live, end streams, or chat or moderate there. Do not assume that a separate Moderator role provides Live Control Room access; verify the current permissions in Studio.

Invite, change, or remove a teammate
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Settings, then Permissions.
- Select Invite, enter the teammate’s email address, and choose the access level that matches their tasks.
- Send the invitation and have the teammate accept it using their own Google Account. Invitations expire after 30 days.
- When responsibilities change, return to Permissions to change the role or remove access.
- Before the event, test the specific actions the delegate needs in the relevant YouTube Studio interface.
Delegates can manage in YouTube and Studio on computer and mobile, but cannot manage through YouTube APIs. YouTube also notes that some actions may vary by platform or may be unavailable to a delegate. Channel permissions do not grant access to YouTube Music or YouTube Kids.
Keep channel access and ownership distinct
Use channel permissions for day-to-day delegated work. Do not confuse a channel-permissions role with Brand Account ownership or an ownership transfer. The channel-permissions Owner can delete the channel but cannot transfer ownership to another user through that role. Brand Account ownership has separate procedures, so verify how the channel is set up before making ownership changes.
YouTube warns that deleting the primary owner account linked to a channel can also delete the channel. Keep ownership decisions separate from routine staffing changes, and grant access only to trusted users.

Can I give someone access to only one live-stream action?
YouTube provides named, grouped roles rather than custom per-action permissions. Choose the least broad role that supports the person’s work, and verify the needed control in Studio before the broadcast.
Can a channel-permissions Owner transfer channel ownership?
No. The channel-permissions Owner role can delete the channel but cannot transfer ownership to another user. Brand Account ownership and transfer use separate procedures, so check the channel’s setup before advising or making a transfer.
