You can keep a YouTube stream running without leaving a general-purpose computer on by using a cloud encoder for prerecorded content or compatible standalone streaming hardware. YouTube must still receive an encoder feed; uploading a video or playlist to YouTube alone does not create a continuous livestream. Before choosing a setup, check the service or device limits, test recovery and archiving, and make sure you have rights to stream the content.
Choose a way to send the stream

YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. It also lists the AJA HELO Plus as standalone hardware; its PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media for YouTube Live without a computer. OneStream Live documents a 24-hour streaming feature for YouTube that requires its Enterprise plan and has a maximum duration of 30 days. Confirm current plan details and behavior with the provider before relying on any option.
What a computer-free setup does—and does not—do
With a cloud encoder, the service sends media from its servers. With standalone hardware, a dedicated device sends the feed from your location. In either case, YouTube still receives a live encoder feed; this is different from uploading a regular video or playlist and expecting it to appear as a continuous live broadcast.
Cloud hosting removes your computer and home upload connection from the encoding path, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Recovery after a network or service interruption depends on the provider or device. Test what happens when a connection drops, and do not treat vendor reliability statements as an independently verified uptime guarantee.

Set up and test your stream
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Its getting-started requirements say users must be at least 16 to livestream.
- Choose the right workflow. Use a cloud playlist or media-hosting encoder for prerecorded content, or compatible hardware or software for the live source you need. Check subscription tiers and maximum run lengths before scheduling a long broadcast.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and provide the encoder with the stream URL and stream key as required. Treat the key like a credential and use the intended channel.
- Test before promoting a long broadcast. Check picture and audio, connection and reconnection behavior, stream rotation, and what happens to archives. Verify the results in the provider settings and YouTube Studio.
- Check content rights and policy compliance. Use only media you have rights to stream and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and applicable monetization rules. A cloud encoder does not change those obligations.
Plan for archives and long-running streams
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its encoder documentation does not promise automatic archiving for streams longer than 12 hours. If you want replays or a permanent recording, confirm how your provider handles rotation and archives, and check the result in YouTube Studio before depending on it.

Questions to ask before choosing a service or device
Compare the actual cost and failure-recovery process rather than assuming a cloud service is cheaper or more reliable than hardware. The available product information establishes some feature and plan limits, but does not establish comparative prices, service-level guarantees, or independent uptime measurements.

Can I run a 24/7 YouTube livestream from an uploaded playlist alone?
No. YouTube must receive a live encoder feed. Use a cloud service or compatible hardware or software that sends the media as a livestream; a normal uploaded playlist is not itself a continuous live broadcast.

Can I turn off my computer during the stream?
Yes, if a cloud encoder or compatible standalone device is sending the feed instead. A computer running encoder software must stay in the broadcast path.
Will YouTube automatically save a 24/7 stream as a replay?

Can a cloud encoder stream any video I upload?
Not necessarily. Check the provider’s supported workflow and limits, and only stream media you have rights to use. YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and monetization rules still apply.
