You still need a source device and an internet connection: use a webcam for a basic presentation, or send a feed from streaming software such as OBS using YouTube’s stream URL and key.
Choose Unlisted if anyone with the link may watch and reshare it; choose Private if you want to grant access to selected people by email. These settings control access and discoverability, not end-to-end confidentiality.
Unlisted vs. Private YouTube Live Streams
| Setting | Who can watch | How access is shared | Discoverability and comments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private | The owner and people selected by the owner | Add viewers by email in YouTube Studio | Not shown in search or the channel’s Videos tab; comments are unavailable |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the URL | Share the URL; recipients do not need a Google Account, and can reshare it | Not shown in search or the channel’s Videos tab unless added to a public playlist; comments are available |
For sensitive broadcasts, remember that Private does not mean confidential from YouTube: the platform says private videos may be reviewed by its systems and human reviewers for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention. An Unlisted link can also spread beyond your intended audience.
What You Need Before You Start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A source device and stable internet connection. A laptop and webcam can handle a basic camera-and-microphone presentation.
- For an encoder workflow, streaming software or hardware. YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software.
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. Test your setup and preview before inviting viewers; network interruptions can break a stream. Avoid showing personal information in the broadcast or chat.

Set Up a Stream With an Encoder
- Open YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream for a first session; for later sessions, review any reused settings.
- Choose Private or Unlisted before starting. Do not assume the default visibility is right: YouTube says defaults vary by creator age, with Private for ages 13–17 and Public for ages 18 and over.
- In your encoder, use its YouTube integration if available. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field and the stream key into its key field.
- Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check the picture and sound, then click Go live.
- When finished, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; find the saved upload in Studio’s Live tab.
Treat the stream key like a credential: YouTube describes it as the encoder’s destination and a way for YouTube to accept the feed. Keep it private. If it is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Set Up a Stream With a Webcam
You can stream directly through the webcam workflow in Live Control Room; a separate encoder or server is not necessary for a basic camera-and-microphone presentation.

- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create, then Go Live.
- Set the intended visibility, title, and details.
- Select your camera and microphone, then check framing and sound.
- Start the stream when ready, and confirm that the intended viewers can access it.
Schedule and Test Your Stream
Scheduling creates a watch page in advance. Viewers can share its URL or set reminders. For a scheduled encoder stream, test that the preview appears and that your intended audience can reach the watch page.
- Make a test stream with the visibility you plan to use.
- Check that the camera or encoder feed, sound, and preview work as expected.
- For Unlisted, test the link with a viewer who is not signed into your account. For Private, confirm that selected viewers use the invited email account.
- Check your upload capacity against YouTube’s recommendation of 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate.
Continuous or 24/7 Playback
A regular live event and a continuous prerecorded stream are different workflows. YouTube’s documentation lists optional services such as Gyre and Upstream for continuous or 24/7 streaming scenarios that can operate without a dedicated PC. These are specialized options, not requirements for an ordinary live event. Check YouTube’s current directory and each provider’s terms before choosing a service.

Change Visibility After a Stream
After a live upload is saved, you can change its visibility in Studio: open Content, select Live, edit Visibility, and save. The same guidance applies to live uploads as to other videos. Changing an Unlisted upload to Private limits access to the owner and selected viewers; it is a better response to a widely shared link than assuming the link can be kept secret.

No dedicated physical streaming server is specified as a requirement for the documented workflows. A webcam can stream through Live Control Room; an encoder workflow needs software or hardware to send the feed to YouTube.
