Watching YouTube around the clock has no single guaranteed monthly data total: usage depends on the average data rate actually delivered to your device and how many hours you watch. As a planning estimate, each sustained 1 Mbps uses about 324 decimal GB over 30 days, so measure a representative viewing period on your device and connection for a more useful estimate.
YouTube adjusts playback quality based on factors such as connection speed, screen size, source video, and browser support, and you can also choose a quality yourself. Recommended connection speeds for a resolution are not the same as a guaranteed playback data rate.
How much data does YouTube use 24/7?
There is no universal monthly figure in YouTube’s guidance. The estimates below are arithmetic examples for a continuous, actual average transfer rate—not predictions tied to a particular resolution. They use decimal units, where 1 GB equals 1,000 MB.
| Actual average transfer rate | Estimated use over 30 days, 24 hours a day |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 324 GB |
| 2 Mbps | 648 GB |
| 5 Mbps | 1,620 GB (1.62 TB) |
| 10 Mbps | 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) |
For example, if playback actually averages 5 Mbps continuously, the estimate is 1,620 GB in 30 days. That does not mean selecting 1080p will necessarily use 5 Mbps throughout viewing. YouTube’s recommended sustained playback speed for 1080p is 5 Mbps; that is a connection recommendation, not a published data-use rate.

How to estimate your own monthly use
Use the average data rate actually transferred, not just the resolution label. For decimal GB, the calculation is:
Estimated monthly GB = actual average Mbps × 0.45 × hours watched

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
For a 30-day month watched continuously, that simplifies to:
Estimated monthly GB = actual average Mbps × 324
This is a unit conversion based on continuous transfer: 1 Mbps corresponds to 0.45 decimal GB per hour, and 30 days contain 720 hours. It is not a YouTube-published consumption table. For other viewing schedules, multiply the measured average Mbps by 0.45 and by your total viewing hours.

- Watch YouTube on the device and connection you plan to use for a representative period.
- Check that device’s or network’s data-use measurement over that period.
- Divide the observed data by the number of hours watched to estimate average hourly use, or convert it to an average Mbps if your measurement provides that rate.
- Scale the observed use to your planned monthly viewing hours, and leave room for variation.
- Compare the estimate with your provider’s data allowance and billing period, accounting for other devices and internet use as well.
A short sample may not capture changes in playback quality, ads, buffering, background activity, or different videos. Treat the result as an estimate rather than a guarantee.
Why YouTube data use changes
YouTube says playback quality can vary with internet connection speed, player or screen size, source-video quality, and browser support. Higher playback quality uses more data; selecting Data saver can reduce picture quality and data use. You can also set video-quality preferences separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi in the Android app. See YouTube’s guidance on changing video quality on a computer and changing video quality on Android.

YouTube lists recommended sustained playback speeds of 0.7 Mbps for 360p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K. These are connection recommendations, not measurements of the rate YouTube will actually transfer during playback. YouTube also says purchased 4K UHD titles on eligible devices need a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps; that, too, is a connection requirement rather than a monthly data estimate.

YouTube’s live-stream filming guidance gives a rule of thumb of about 10 MB per minute for streaming from a phone. That refers to a creator sending a live broadcast, not a viewer downloading and watching YouTube. Do not use that figure to estimate your viewing data. YouTube’s live encoder bitrate recommendations are also for outgoing creator streams, not viewer playback.

FAQ
How many GB does watching YouTube all month use?
It depends on the actual average playback data rate. At a sustained 1 Mbps, continuous viewing for a 30-day month works out to about 324 decimal GB; at 5 Mbps, it works out to about 1,620 GB. These are conditional calculations, not guaranteed rates for a resolution.
Does YouTube use more data at 1080p or 4K?
Higher playback quality uses more data, and YouTube says 4K UHD playback needs more data than HD or SD. But resolution alone does not tell you the exact amount; playback quality and the actual data rate can vary.
Is YouTube’s 10 MB-per-minute rule for watching or live streaming?
It is a rule of thumb for creator-side live streaming from a phone, not for watching a stream. Viewers should estimate use from observed playback data instead.
How can I use less data while watching YouTube?
Choose a lower video quality or use Data saver where available. YouTube also lets Android users set video-quality preferences separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will YouTube’s recommended speed tell me my monthly data use?
No. A recommended speed describes connection performance for playback, not a guaranteed average transfer rate. Measure data use on the device or network for a representative viewing period, then scale it to your planned hours.
