RTMP is commonly used to send a live feed from an encoder to a platform or ingest server, while HLS and MPEG-DASH are HTTP-based options for delivering live or on-demand video to viewers. They are not interchangeable choices in a single ranking: identify whether you need contribution or playback, then verify your encoder, service, player and target devices.
The Three Protocols at a Glance
| Protocol | Typical role | How it works | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Live contribution or ingest, when the receiving service supports it | Multiplexes audio, video and data messages over a reliable transport such as TCP | Whether the endpoint accepts RTMP and how the full ingest workflow handles interruptions |
| HLS | Live and on-demand playback delivery | Uses HTTP playlists that reference media segments; multivariant playlists can offer bitrate alternatives | Target device, player, codec, packaging and latency requirements |
| MPEG-DASH | Live and on-demand playback delivery | Uses HTTP manifests and media segments over existing web and CDN infrastructure | Target player support for the required profile, codec, DRM and latency features |
RTMP: A Contribution and Ingest Protocol
Adobe’s RTMP specification describes a bidirectional message-multiplexing protocol over a reliable stream transport such as TCP. It is intended to carry audio, video and data messages, with timing information, between communicating peers. This makes RTMP relevant when an encoder sends a live feed to a receiving server or platform that accepts it; it should not be assumed to be the viewer’s browser playback format.
When considering RTMP, check the receiving service’s ingest requirements and test the complete path from encoder to endpoint. The specification alone does not establish a guaranteed end-to-end latency or how a particular service handles reconnection.
HLS: HTTP Delivery for Live and On-Demand Video
Apple documents HLS for live broadcasts and prerecorded video-on-demand. It delivers media over HTTP: playlists reference media files, and clients request segments. Multivariant playlists can describe bitrate alternatives so a compatible client can adapt to network conditions.

Apple documents HLS across its platforms as well as PCs, but that is not a compatibility guarantee for every codec, operating-system version or third-party player. Check the actual target devices and player. Apple’s current authoring guidance continues to evolve; RFC 8216 is an informational 2017 specification describing HLS version 7, not a complete statement of current Apple guidance.
MPEG-DASH: An ISO Standard for HTTP Streaming
MPEG-DASH is the ISO/IEC 23009 family for dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP. MPEG describes its use with existing HTTP infrastructure, including servers, CDNs, proxies and caches, for both live and on-demand streaming.

ISO lists ISO/IEC 23009-1:2026, Edition 6, published July 14, 2026, as the current published edition of Part 1. A standard does not guarantee that every player supports every DASH profile, codec, DRM mode or low-latency feature. Test the client stack you intend to deploy.
How to Choose for Your Workflow
- Identify the role. Decide whether you are sending a live contribution feed to an ingest endpoint or delivering playback to viewers. RTMP is commonly relevant to ingest; HLS and DASH are playback delivery approaches.
- List your target devices and players. Check the actual operating systems, browsers, TVs, apps and player libraries. Do not assume universal support based on a protocol name alone.
- Set and measure your latency target. Test glass-to-glass latency with the encoder, packager, CDN and player you will use. No universal end-to-end latency winner is established by the cited sources. Apple’s HLS authoring guidance recommends a one-second Part Target Duration for Low-Latency HLS, but that configuration recommendation is not a promise of one-second end-to-end latency.
- Confirm packaging and media requirements. Verify container, codec, encryption and DRM constraints. HLS and DASH can use CMAF media, but their manifests and client support remain distinct; Apple notes older clients may not support CMAF.
- Evaluate delivery operations. For HLS or DASH, confirm that your service can create the required manifests and renditions, and assess caching, origin load, failover and telemetry for your workflow.
- Estimate total cost for your implementation. Compare encoding, packaging, CDN, DRM, monitoring and client-workflow needs. The reviewed sources do not establish that one protocol inherently costs less.
Latency, Bandwidth and Compatibility: What You Can Conclude
RTMP’s specification defines message transport, not a universal latency result. HLS and DASH use segmented HTTP delivery, but actual latency depends on configuration and the encoder, packager, network, CDN and player. Measure the complete path rather than relying on a protocol-only estimate.

- WORKS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX—Compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS for streaming, video calls, and content creation. Note: PS5/Xbox streaming requires a capture card (sold separately) to connect this kit to your console.
HLS playlists can describe bitrate alternatives, and MPEG-DASH is an adaptive streaming standard. These capabilities do not prove that one player will adapt faster or consume less bandwidth than another. Results depend on the stream configuration, network conditions and client implementation.
HTTP-based delivery can use ordinary web servers and CDNs, but that does not make every device or player compatible with every stream. Validate the codecs, profiles, manifests and DRM modes your audience needs.

Common Workflow: RTMP Ingest with HLS or DASH Playback
A workflow can use different protocols for contribution and playback. For example, an encoder may send a feed using RTMP to a service, which then packages video for viewer delivery using HLS, DASH or both. Whether a particular platform supports that path is service-specific; consult its current documentation.

Are HLS and DASH only for live streaming?
No. Apple documents HLS for live broadcasts and prerecorded video-on-demand, and MPEG describes DASH for both live and on-demand streaming.
Can HLS and DASH use the same media segments?
They can use CMAF media as a shared segmented media foundation, but their manifest formats and client support remain distinct. Check compatibility for the specific clients and media configuration.
Which protocol has the lowest latency?
The reviewed sources do not establish a universal winner. Measure glass-to-glass latency for your encoder, packaging, delivery and player setup. Low-Latency HLS settings are configuration guidance, not an end-to-end latency guarantee.
Does DASH work on every device?
No universal device-support guarantee follows from the standard. Verify the profile, codec, DRM and latency features in each target player and device.
