Cloud streaming can reduce the need to keep local encoding hardware running, but it does not automatically make a video stream cheaper. To compare costs fairly, separate encoding and packaging from storage, origination, and delivery to viewers; audience size, watch time, and delivered bitrate can make distribution the larger expense.
What Are You Comparing?
Local encoding uses your own computer or hardware to prepare video for streaming. Cloud encoding uses a provider’s computing resources. Both are distinct from delivering the finished stream to viewers, which may be handled by a content delivery network (CDN) or by a platform such as YouTube.
A self-managed delivery pipeline needs encoded and packaged content before a CDN can distribute it. AWS documentation says, “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” AWS describes formats including HLS, MPEG-DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF; its documentation also identifies MediaConvert as an option for preparing video-on-demand assets.
YouTube’s live workflow differs: the creator sends an ingest stream, and YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. That means a creator’s encoder and the platform’s viewer-facing rendition generation are not necessarily the same cost or task.

How Much Does Cloud Streaming Cost?
There is no universal cloud-streaming price. Costs depend on the services and region used, video hours, resolution and quality, packaging, storage, and how much content is delivered to viewers. A quoted encoding price alone is not a total streaming cost.
For an illustrative US East (N. Virginia) live-streaming scenario, AWS estimates about $69.74 for a one-hour event with approximately 1,000 viewers at SD 540p. Its example assigns $1.99 to MediaLive, $0.11 to MediaPackage ingest, $0.40 to packaging and origination, and $67.24 to CloudFront distribution. AWS estimates 791 GB of distribution in this example, based on 1,000 viewers consuming 1.8 Mbps each for an hour. These are AWS’s scenario figures, not a general rate card; the result depends on its stated assumptions and prices can change.
| Cost component | What it covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding and packaging | Preparing the video and packaging it for delivery | Depends on hours, output renditions, codec, resolution, frame rate, and quality target. |
| Storage and origin | Keeping or serving source and packaged video | Relevant to workflows that store assets or use an origin before CDN delivery. |
| Viewer delivery | Transferring the stream to viewers | Depends on viewer count, watch time, delivered bitrate, region, and cache behavior. |
| Local hardware | Equipment purchase, power, maintenance, and utilization | Include these costs when comparing local encoding with cloud services. |
AWS notes that QVBR may reduce estimated output-bandwidth cost by 10–50% in its example, depending on video complexity. Treat that as a scenario-specific potential, not a guaranteed saving.

Is Local Video Encoding Cheaper?
It can be, but the available figures do not establish a break-even point. A fair comparison needs an identical workload and current local inputs: hardware acquisition cost and useful life, power draw during encoding, electricity price, achievable throughput for the chosen codec and quality, and how much the hardware is used. The cloud side also needs region, service tier, storage duration, delivery region, cache-hit ratio, bitrate mix, and any contracted discounts.
GPU hardware encoding is a real local option. However, the available research does not establish which consumer GPU is best or prove when buying hardware costs less than cloud encoding. Avoid treating encoding cost as the whole bill: for some workloads, viewer delivery can cost more than encoding and packaging.
How Much Bandwidth Does a Live Stream Use?
Bandwidth use depends on bitrate and viewing duration. For a creator sending a live contribution stream, the local upload connection must carry that outgoing stream continuously. For a cloud or CDN delivery pipeline, viewer traffic is a separate flow, and the amount delivered scales with viewers, watch time, and bitrate. Keep these flows distinct when estimating bandwidth and cost.

Do not compare a one-time upload of a prerecorded file with continuous live-stream upload as if they were equivalent costs. The file size and upload speed determine the time and traffic for the initial transfer, while the cloud workflow may also incur storage, processing, and viewer-delivery charges.
When Does It Make Sense to Buy an Encoding PC or GPU?
Local encoding can suit real-time events where the source is being created live, or workflows that require processing on premises. It may also fit an operation that already has suitable hardware and staff to maintain it. Whether that is economical depends on utilization, workload, power, hardware life, and the alternative service and delivery costs.
Cloud encoding can shift compute and operations away from local machines and may make scaling easier, but it does not remove the need to account for packaging, storage, origin, or viewer delivery. Compare both approaches against the same video hours, outputs, quality target, latency needs, audience, and watch time.

FAQ
What is the difference between encoding and streaming delivery?
Encoding prepares video in a format and quality suitable for playback; packaging organizes it for distribution. Delivery transfers the prepared video to viewers, often through a CDN. They are related but separate cost centers.
Does cloud encoding include viewer delivery?
Not necessarily. A service quote may cover encoding or packaging without covering storage, origination, or CDN delivery. Check which components and assumptions are included.
Why can viewer count change the cost so much?
More viewers and longer watch times increase the amount of video delivered. The total also depends on the average bitrate, delivery region, and cache behavior. AWS’s illustrative 540p example shows distribution as a separate, substantial line item.

Does YouTube create multiple versions of a live stream?
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats. The creator’s ingest encoding should therefore be distinguished from YouTube’s viewer-facing rendition generation.
Can I calculate whether local encoding is cheaper?
Yes, if you compare the same workload and have current inputs for local hardware cost, useful life, power, electricity, throughput, and utilization, alongside cloud processing, storage, and delivery assumptions. Without those inputs, a single break-even figure would be misleading.
