RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection from your encoder to the streaming service’s ingest server. If your destination supports RTMPS and your encoder can use it, choose it by default; if only RTMP is supported, use the service’s documented RTMP setup. Confirm the destination’s current protocol, URL, and encoder requirements before you start.

What is the difference between RTMP and RTMPS?

RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) is used to send a live stream from an encoder to an ingest server. RTMPS uses RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, encrypting that encoder-to-ingest connection. Encryption in transit does not secure your account, protect a stream key everywhere it is stored or used, or determine how the service delivers the stream to viewers.

Protocol support varies by destination. YouTube lists RTMP as unencrypted and RTMPS as encrypted in its ingest comparison. Twitch’s documented broadcast URL format uses RTMP, so do not assume that every service offers RTMPS.

RTMP and RTMPS compared

Consideration RTMP RTMPS
Connection security Unencrypted ingest connection Encrypted ingest connection using TLS/SSL
Destination support Supported by some services, including Twitch’s documented broadcast URL Available when the destination provides an RTMPS endpoint
Encoder requirements Encoder must support the destination’s RTMP settings Encoder must support RTMPS and use the destination’s RTMPS endpoint
YouTube capabilities YouTube lists H.264 and normal, low, and ultra-low latency YouTube lists H.264 and normal, low, and ultra-low latency

The latency and codec entries in the table describe YouTube’s comparison, not a universal guarantee across streaming services. YouTube also lists HLS and DASH ingest, which support additional codecs and workflows, including some higher-resolution use cases, but generally have higher latency because they are segment-based.

Should I use RTMP or RTMPS for live streaming?

Use RTMPS when the destination offers it and your encoder supports it. It encrypts the connection to the ingest server. If the service or encoder only supports RTMP, follow the service’s documented configuration and understand that the ingest connection is unencrypted.

Do not treat an RTMP address as an RTMPS address by changing its protocol prefix. The service and encoder must agree on the protocol and the complete endpoint, including the correct hostname and path.

How to set up RTMPS for YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current RTMPS ingest address provided for your stream.
  2. In your encoder, select its YouTube RTMPS preset or choose RTMPS and enter the exact address supplied by YouTube.
  3. Enter the stream key using the service’s instructions. Keep it private and do not include it in screenshots or public posts.
  4. Check that the encoder supports RTMPS, then start the stream and confirm that YouTube receives it.

YouTube’s technical guide specifies TLS to port 443 and SNI hostname handling. Use the current endpoint and settings supplied by YouTube rather than hard-coding a generic URL. The Live API also exposes separate primary and backup RTMPS ingestion address fields.

What if RTMPS does not connect?

Check the endpoint before changing unrelated encoder settings. An SSL error can indicate that the protocol, hostname, port, or TLS/SNI handling is incorrect. A timeout can occur if the encoder is trying plain RTMP against an endpoint that expects TLS, or if the endpoint is wrong.

  1. Copy the RTMPS address again from the destination’s current setup page.
  2. Verify that the encoder is configured for RTMPS, not RTMP, and that the host and path match the supplied endpoint.
  3. For YouTube, verify the port and hostname handling against its current technical guide.
  4. Check the encoder’s current documentation for RTMPS support and TLS requirements.
  5. If the problem remains, use the destination’s current troubleshooting guidance or its supported RTMP configuration if available.

Does RTMPS add latency?

The research sources do not establish a general latency penalty for RTMPS compared with RTMP. YouTube lists both protocols for normal, low, and ultra-low latency. Actual options and behavior depend on the destination’s current ingest support and your encoder configuration.

FAQ

Is RTMPS better than RTMP?

When both are supported, RTMPS is generally the better default because it encrypts the encoder-to-ingest connection. It does not replace account security or protect information outside that connection.

Can I use RTMPS on every streaming platform?

No. Protocol support differs by platform. Check the destination’s current documentation and use its specified endpoint. Twitch’s documented broadcast URL format is RTMP.

Can I turn an RTMP URL into an RTMPS URL?

No. Use the RTMPS endpoint provided by the destination. Simply relabeling an RTMP URL does not configure the correct secure connection.
