Yes, you can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event, but a stream still has to be encoded. If by “without encoding” you mean without running encoder software on your computer, YouTube documents a webcam workflow for camera input, and its encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus, which can schedule prerecorded media without a computer. The HELO Plus is still a hardware encoder; YouTube’s webcam instructions do not describe playing a video file directly.
What “Without Encoding” Means
YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. A computer-based encoder sends a feed to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. So prerecorded video can be shown in a live broadcast, but “without encoding” is not quite accurate if it means no encoding process at all.

Requirements Before You Go Live
YouTube says your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The creator must be at least 16 years old. Check your channel’s eligibility before planning a broadcast.

- Set up the live event. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream in Live Control Room and get the server URL and stream key.
- Configure your encoder. Add the video playback source in your encoder, then enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key like a password: it directs a feed to your channel.
- Test and check the preview. Start the encoder feed, wait for it to appear in Live Control Room, and check the audio and video before going live.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. Go live only after checking the preview. Keep monitoring the stream’s audio and video while it runs.
YouTube recommends testing your setup and leaving headroom in your upload bandwidth rather than using all available capacity. If the feed is unstable, check the connection and encoder settings before the event.

Do You Need a Computer?
Not for every supported path. The AJA HELO Plus is a named hardware example in YouTube’s encoder directory: its optional PlayToStream feature schedules prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. It remains an encoder, so it avoids running encoder software on a computer rather than eliminating encoding.
YouTube’s webcam option also avoids live-stream encoding software, but it is documented for webcam input—not for selecting and broadcasting an existing video file. Do not assume that this webcam workflow can replace a prerecorded-file playback setup.

Archive and Backup Considerations
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so do not rely on YouTube’s archive as your only copy of a long broadcast.

Can I stream a prerecorded file without any encoding?

Can I use YouTube’s webcam workflow to play a video file?

What do I need to use a software encoder with YouTube?
You need an eligible channel, an encoder, and the YouTube server URL and stream key. Test the feed, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor audio and video during the broadcast.
