YouTube does not publish a universal rule that live streams earn more or less than uploaded videos. Both can earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue when the channel meets the applicable requirements and accepts the Watch Page Monetization Module; eligible live streams may also earn fan-funding revenue. To understand why your results differ, compare the revenue sources and ad activity in YouTube Analytics rather than relying on a general payout rate.
Do YouTube Live Streams Make Money?
Yes. YouTube’s Watch Page covers both long-form videos and live streams. Partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module can earn their stated share of net Watch Page ad revenue—55%—from eligible public content, including live streams. This is a revenue share, not a fixed amount per view, and YouTube says earnings are not guaranteed.
Eligible creators may also earn from YouTube Premium viewing. Live streams can offer additional revenue through eligible features such as memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. These features have their own requirements and terms; partners who accept the Commerce Product Module receive 70% of net revenues from covered features.
Why Can a Live Stream and an Upload Earn Different Amounts?
The formats have overlapping monetization, but an individual view does not guarantee an ad or the same revenue. The amount depends on what revenue is included, which ads actually serve, and the circumstances of the audience and viewing. YouTube does not provide a universal payout comparison between live streams and uploads.

- Ad opportunities and fill: With live monetization on, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. Mid-rolls can be automatic or manual, but YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.
- Revenue mix: A live stream may earn from Super Chat or Super Stickers, while RPM can include several revenue sources. Comparing total RPM with ad revenue alone can give a misleading impression.
- Views and ad activity: Total views are not the same as monetized playbacks or ad impressions. A difference in total views does not by itself explain a difference in ad earnings.
- Live event and replay: The live event and its replay may have different viewing and revenue patterns. Review them separately where YouTube Analytics allows.
- Audience and context: Viewing patterns and audience context can differ between a scheduled live event and an uploaded video. Use your own reporting rather than assuming one format always performs better.
RPM and CPM: What Do They Measure?

These definitions come from YouTube Help’s Analytics guidance. Because RPM can include multiple revenue sources, look at the relevant revenue breakdown before attributing a change to advertising.
How to Compare Live Stream and Upload Revenue
- Choose comparable content and a time period. Compare similar audiences and viewing contexts over the same period where possible.
- Separate ad revenue from total revenue. Check whether you are comparing ad revenue alone or a total that also includes Premium, memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers.
- Review views alongside ad activity. Where available, examine monetized playbacks and ad impressions as well as total views.
- Check live ad settings and reporting. Review mid-roll settings and whether ads actually served. YouTube says it provides live-stream and live-replay ad revenue breakdowns in Analytics; distinguish the event from its replay where reporting permits.
- Investigate changes by revenue source. YouTube recommends using Analytics reports to understand revenue changes. A change in RPM alone does not identify which revenue source changed.
What Monetization Requirements Apply?
Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue on long-form and live-stream content require participation in the YouTube Partner Program and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module, subject to applicable requirements. Fan-funding features use the Commerce Product Module and have feature-specific eligibility. Check YouTube’s current guidance for program requirements, regional availability, and feature terms.

Why do YouTube live streams earn less than videos?
They do not always. Results vary with ads actually served, viewing and audience context, and which revenue sources are counted. YouTube does not publish a universal live-versus-upload payout rate.
How much does YouTube pay for 1,000 views?
There is no single fixed amount. Earnings depend on eligible monetization, ad activity, audience and content context, and other revenue sources. RPM can help you assess creator revenue per 1,000 views for your own content, but it is not a guaranteed rate.

Why is my YouTube RPM different on a livestream?
RPM can reflect more than advertising, including Premium and eligible fan-funding revenue. Differences in ad serving, monetized playbacks, total views, or revenue mix may affect the comparison. Use the Analytics breakdowns to investigate your own results.
Does every live ad slot show an ad?
No. YouTube says live ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Automatic or manual mid-roll placement creates an opportunity, not a guarantee that an ad will be shown.
