An old PC can be a practical 24/7 loop player if it reliably plays your actual media and recovers after interruptions. Cloud management is most useful when you need remote updates, scheduling, monitoring, or control of multiple screens; it does not always mean video is continuously streamed over the internet. Before choosing, test playback and outage behavior, then compare measured energy use and the value of management features.
Local Playback and Cloud Management Are Different
A local player can run a media file from its own storage, while a cloud service may distribute playlists and manage the player remotely. Some signage systems cache media locally and continue playing when the internet is unavailable. PiSignage says deployed files are stored on its player for offline playback, and 1Play says playlists are cached locally. [C04] [C08]
Other content may depend more directly on an internet connection. ScreenCloud distinguishes content available offline from content that merely preloads: a streaming YouTube video may play through once after preloading, but that does not make it permanently available offline. ScreenCloud recommends uploading video directly to its media library for stable playback. [C02]
For a single static loop, an existing computer configured to launch a local file at startup may be sufficient. Cloud-managed playback can be worthwhile if remote changes, schedules, monitoring, or management across locations solve a real operational need. The available sources establish these feature categories, not a universal financial advantage.

Compare the Options
| Consideration | Local PC | Cloud-managed player or signage system |
|---|---|---|
| Playback | Test the actual media, resolution, codec, and display on the computer. | Check which formats and apps are supported and whether media is cached locally. |
| Internet outage | A locally stored file may continue playing, depending on the setup. | Offline behavior varies; ask what is downloaded, for how long, and what still depends on a connection. |
| Power failure | Check whether the computer launches playback automatically after power returns. | Offline support does not guarantee the player will reboot and resume without internet. |
| Remote operations | Changes may require direct access or another remote-control setup. | May provide remote updates, schedules, monitoring, or multi-screen management; verify the specific service. |
| Cost | Measure energy use and include maintenance and any replacement hardware. | Compare service fees and player costs with the operational value of its features. |
Test the Old PC With Your Actual Setup
Age by itself does not tell you whether a computer is suitable. Test it with the actual display, media resolution, codec, audio, and loop you intend to use. Confirm that it can play continuously at the required quality and that playback starts again after a restart.
- Load the intended media file and run it on the target display at the required resolution and quality.
- Let the loop run long enough to reveal playback problems, then check for interruptions or quality issues.
- Restart the PC and confirm that it returns to the loop without manual intervention.
- Test the behavior you need after a network outage and, separately, after a power failure.
A simple local loop may not need cloud management. If operators need to change content remotely, schedule playlists, monitor player health, or manage screens in several locations, those features may justify a cloud-managed system.
Check What Happens During Outages
Ask the provider or test the system directly: Is the media downloaded to the player? How long does it remain available without a connection? Will playback restart after a power failure if the internet is still down? Can you see player health, restart it remotely, or review proof-of-play evidence? These are separate questions; a general claim of offline support does not settle every combination of power, network, and device failure.

ScreenCloud says some devices may not reboot fully in offline mode after a power failure and may wait for internet to return. Its documentation also says cached media can play without a connection, subject to content and app support. [C02]
As one commercial-display example, Philips’ D-Line 43BDL4650D/11 datasheet describes internal memory for cached content when the network fails and FailOver, which selects backup content if the player fails. The display runs Android 11 and can run compatible apps directly. These features describe that model, not ordinary TVs or all cloud systems. [C03]
Estimate the Local Power Cost
Measure the complete playback setup at the wall while it is doing representative work. A computer’s actual average draw depends on its workload and connected devices; a power supply’s maximum rating is not a measure of continuous consumption. If the comparison includes the whole screen system, measure or estimate the display separately. [C01] [C06]

When Cloud Management May Be Worthwhile
Cloud management may be useful when you need to change content remotely, schedule playback, monitor screens, or manage several locations. Compare those benefits against the subscription and player costs, and verify what works offline before relying on the system.
For a single local file and a stable computer, a local loop may be the simpler choice. There is no universal energy-cost break-even point: it depends on the complete setup’s measured draw, operating hours, electricity price, and the cost and value of any cloud service.
FAQ
Does cloud-managed playback always require an internet connection?
No. Some signage systems download or cache media locally for offline playback. Streaming apps may behave differently, so check which content is stored on the player and what requires a connection. [C02] [C04] [C08]
How do I estimate the electricity cost of running an old PC?
Measure the complete playback setup’s average watts, multiply by the hours it runs and days per year, divide by 1,000 to get kWh, then multiply by your local price per kWh. Measure the display separately if you want to include it.
Will a cloud player resume after a power failure with no internet?
Not necessarily. Offline playback and recovery after power loss are separate behaviors. Check the specific device and service; ScreenCloud warns that some devices may wait for internet to return before rebooting fully in offline mode. [C02]
Is a small computer’s power-supply rating its actual consumption?
No. A recommended supply capacity or maximum rating is not a measurement of continuous playback draw. Measure the operating setup at the wall. [C01] [C06]
