To stream prerecorded video on YouTube continuously, create a broadcast in YouTube Studio and send it an ongoing feed from an encoder playing your videos or playlist. You can use local software, dedicated hardware, or a cloud service; YouTube does not turn an ordinary uploaded video into a continuous live channel by itself. Check livestream eligibility, rights, stream health, and archiving limits before you begin.

How a 24/7 YouTube stream works

There are three separate parts: a YouTube broadcast and watch page, an encoder that sends the feed, and a media source or playlist that supplies the prerecorded programming. The encoder may run on a computer, dedicated hardware, or a cloud service. Choose based on your budget, scheduling needs, media inputs, and who will handle power, internet, monitoring, and recovery.

Method What it requires Considerations
Local software encoder A computer, media files, power, and a sustained upload connection You control the setup, but local hardware and network availability are part of the uptime plan.
Dedicated hardware encoder An encoder appliance and any required video inputs Compare inputs, supported protocols and codecs, and the resolution and frame rate you need.
Cloud streaming service A service that sends your media feed to YouTube May suit creators who do not want a local computer supplying the continuous feed. Verify current features, costs, and reliability claims with the provider.

No single approach is proven to be the most reliable for everyone. Compare ongoing cost, playlist controls, monitoring, and what happens when a connection or device fails.

Check YouTube livestream eligibility

YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Its current guidance sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it and confirm eligibility before launch day. Check YouTube Studio for current requirements.

Set up the broadcast and connect an encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Live Control Room’s Stream tab to create or reuse a stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server and key fields. Keep the key private: someone with it may be able to send content to your broadcast. Reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
  3. Configure the encoder to play your video or playlist and send the feed. Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview.
  4. Depending on the stream settings, select Go live in Live Control Room after the feed arrives. For a scheduled event, set it up ahead of time so you can share its watch page and viewers can receive reminders.

Configure and test the video feed

YouTube currently lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.

Recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps with H.264. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the feed. Consult YouTube’s current bitrate table for your settings.

Before broadcasting, test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, check upload capacity, and monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Leave adequate headroom on the connection; if quality is unstable, lower the target bitrate or resolution.

Make sure you have appropriate rights for every video and every third-party element, including music, images, and voice recordings. YouTube may interrupt a livestream for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes. It also warns that a live stream using third-party content may be interrupted even if you have a license, unless the channel is on the rights holder’s allowlist. Confirm permissions and any required allowlisting before streaming, and watch Live Control Room for warnings.

Plan for archives and monetization

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. A continuous 24/7 broadcast passes that threshold, so do not rely on YouTube for a replay copy. Make a local recording or divide the programming into separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours if archives matter, and check current archive settings.

Being live does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to livestreams and separately addresses reused content and repetitive or mass-produced “inauthentic content.” YouTube clarified the latter terminology on July 15, 2025. A loop of old footage is not automatically eligible for monetization just because it is live; check current channel-wide policies and do not assume ad revenue.

Operating checklist

  • Enable livestreaming early and confirm the channel is verified and unrestricted.
  • If the encoder will not connect, check the stream URL and key; reset an exposed key.
  • If the feed arrives but the event is not visible to viewers, check for a required Go live confirmation in Live Control Room.
  • Monitor stream health, audio, playlist playback, and whether the stream remains public as intended.
  • If a copyright warning appears, resolve the rights issue; a license may not be enough without rights-holder allowlisting.
  • For long broadcasts, keep an independent local recording rather than relying on YouTube to archive a stream over 12 hours.

FAQ

Can YouTube turn an uploaded video into a 24/7 livestream by itself?

No. YouTube Live receives an ongoing feed from an encoder. The encoder must play the video or playlist and send it to the broadcast.

How long can a YouTube livestream run and still be archived?

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams over 12 hours may not be captured, so make a local recording or use shorter broadcasts if you need replays.

Can I use music or other licensed content in the stream?

Only if you have the necessary rights, and a license may not prevent an interruption unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel for live use. Confirm the requirements before streaming.

Will a 24/7 prerecorded stream earn money?

Not necessarily. Monetization depends on YouTube’s current policies, including rules for reused and repetitive or mass-produced content. Review the current requirements rather than assuming that continuous live playback qualifies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the stream looks unstable?

Check upload capacity and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Try a lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the configured feed, and test before the full broadcast.
