Your PC can get hotter while streaming because a stream may run alongside a game, scene composition, capture, encoding, and background programs. That added workload does not by itself mean the PC is overheating or that OBS is the cause. Check CPU and GPU temperature and utilization during the problem workload, compare them with the specifications for your exact hardware, then reduce unnecessary load and make sure the system can move air properly.

Why Your PC Gets Hot While Streaming

Streaming while gaming can place several demands on a system at once. OBS uses GPU resources to render and composite scenes as well as resources for encoding. A game or other GPU-heavy applications can compete with OBS for available GPU capacity. Resource-intensive use can also raise CPU and GPU temperatures; airflow, room temperature, cooler condition, and system settings affect how well that heat is handled.

Encoding Is Only Part of the Work

Software encoding uses the CPU for encoding work. A supported hardware encoder can shift that work to a specialized component on the GPU, but it does not make a GPU that is already busy with a game or scene rendering idle. OBS notes that hardware encoders generally have low performance impact, while older encoder generations can involve image-quality tradeoffs at the same bitrate.

Restricted Airflow or Cooling Issues

Dust, hair, or debris blocking vents or fans can impair cooling. A fan or cooler that is not working as intended, high ambient temperature, or an unsuitable cooler installation can also contribute. Laptop vents and prebuilt systems may have specific service requirements, so follow the manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming desktop upgrade steps apply.

How to Diagnose High Temperatures

  1. Recreate the problem using the same game, OBS scene, and other applications you normally use when streaming.
  2. Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures and utilization during that workload. Note which component is heavily loaded and whether performance drops or the system throttles.
  3. Look up temperature guidance for your exact CPU and GPU models, and check OEM guidance if you have a laptop or prebuilt PC. Intel says processor temperature limits vary by model; its general range is not a safe target or a rule for GPUs.
  4. Check that vents and fans are clear and that installed fans and coolers operate as intended. Use the device or component maker’s instructions for cleaning and service.

Intel explains that thermal throttling reduces processor clock speed when the system reaches its thermal limit. A temperature reading should therefore be considered alongside the exact hardware, workload, cooling conditions, and sustained performance—not treated as a universal threshold.

Steps to Reduce Streaming Load and Improve Cooling

  1. Close unneeded GPU-heavy programs. Check for games, applications, or other processes using the GPU that you do not need during the stream.
  2. Leave GPU capacity for OBS. If the GPU is heavily occupied by a game, reduce graphics workload or frame rate if that is acceptable for your stream. NVIDIA notes that GPU utilization above 95% can in some cases contribute to stream lag; this is not a universal temperature limit.
  3. Try a supported hardware encoder. In OBS, test an available hardware encoder if your system supports it. Check the resulting stream quality and performance rather than assuming this change will lower temperatures in every configuration.
  4. Simplify the OBS workload. Remove unnecessary browser sources or scene elements, or reduce resolution and other workload where doing so still meets your image-quality and stream requirements.
  5. Clear and inspect airflow. Make sure vents, filters, and fans are free of dust, hair, and debris, and verify that fans and the installed cooler work as intended. Follow system-maker instructions, particularly for laptops and prebuilts.
  6. Seek system-specific service if needed. If performance worsens, the system throttles, or cooling hardware appears faulty, check cooler compatibility and installation and consult the OEM or component maker.

Choosing a Cooling or Workload Change

What you observe What to try first What to check before upgrading
CPU utilization is high during encoding Try a supported hardware encoder or reduce stream workload if acceptable Encoder support and the resulting image quality at your chosen settings
GPU is busy with a game and OBS Close other GPU-heavy programs or reduce game graphics workload or frame rate Whether the change leaves enough capacity while preserving the experience you want
Vents or fans are blocked or not working properly Clear obstructions and inspect fan and cooler operation Manufacturer service guidance, cooler compatibility, and installation
Desktop case airflow appears restricted after inspection Confirm airflow is the problem before considering a compatible case fan Case mounts, fan size, mounting, connections, noise, and maintenance needs

A case fan is relevant only when the desktop case supports it and restricted airflow is a credible cause. Adding hardware is not a universal fix, and laptop cooling options differ from desktop case upgrades.

FAQ

Does a hot PC mean OBS is overheating it?

Not necessarily. OBS uses GPU resources for scene composition and rendering, while encoding and other applications add their own workload. Check CPU and GPU utilization and temperatures during the same scene or game that triggers the issue.

Will switching to a hardware encoder always lower temperatures?

No. A supported hardware encoder shifts encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but it does not make a saturated GPU idle. Test the change and compare component utilization, temperatures, and stream quality.

What temperature is too hot for my PC?

There is no single limit for every PC or component. Intel says maximum processor temperature limits vary by model, and AMD advises checking the exact product’s specifications. Use guidance for your exact CPU and GPU and consider workload, ambient conditions, cooling, and performance.

Should I add a case fan to cool my streaming PC?

Only consider one if you have a desktop case with compatible mounts and evidence that restricted airflow is contributing to the problem. Check the fan’s size, mounting, and connections, and first make sure existing vents and fans are clear and working.
