For a stationary streaming setup, Ethernet is usually the safer choice because it removes the local wireless link from the connection path. Wi-Fi can work when it remains stable where you stream, but neither connection type guarantees uptime: upload capacity, your router, ISP route, ingest server, platform, and encoder settings can all cause interruptions.

Use a wired connection when practical, then check sustained upload capacity and troubleshoot dropped frames before assuming Wi-Fi is the only problem. Twitch recommends trying Ethernet for more stability, and OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming.

Ethernet vs Wi-Fi for streaming

Factor Ethernet Wi-Fi
Local connection Removes radio signal variation and local wireless interference between the computer and router; usually the safer fixed setup. Performance can vary with distance, obstructions, interference, and other wireless activity. Test it where the streaming device actually sits.
Upload bandwidth Does not increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP. Check the sustained upload available to the stream. Has the same ISP upload limit, with possible additional variation on the local wireless link.
Setup Needs a cable to a router or switch and a compatible port, or a compatible adapter. Convenient when running a cable is impractical; test under the conditions and household load you expect while streaming.
What it cannot fix ISP outages, poor upstream routing, competing uploads, platform-side issues, or encoder misconfiguration. The same upstream and configuration problems can still interrupt a stream.

This comparison reflects Twitch and OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a controlled uptime study. Twitch advises, “Try connecting via ethernet instead of Wi-Fi for more stability.” OBS similarly warns, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming.” Twitch troubleshooting · OBS connection troubleshooting

How much upload speed do you need?

Your configured stream bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth that is actually available. YouTube states that total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Other active uploads can reduce the capacity available to your stream, so a single speed-test result is only a snapshot.

Twitch describes 3–6 Mbps upload as a typical minimum range, but the right amount depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, platform, and bitrate settings. Twitch’s FAQ advises upload speed around the stream bitrate plus 30%; OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. These are different rules of thumb, not guarantees. Twitch troubleshooting · Twitch FAQ · OBS connection guide

As Twitch’s broadcasting guidance puts it, stability is preferable to pushing video quality so high that you drop frames or test the limits of your connection. Twitch broadcasting guidelines

How to troubleshoot dropped frames or disconnects

  1. Run a sustained upload test near the streaming device. Compare the result with your stream bitrate and account for other devices or applications uploading at the same time. Treat the result as a snapshot, not proof of stability.
  2. If you use Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet. If streaming improves, that implicates the local wireless segment, though it does not identify whether signal, interference, or another factor caused the issue.
  3. In OBS, check the dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. Try a different ingest server and reduce bitrate; OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed while troubleshooting.
  4. Check software and network-path issues. OBS lists VPNs, security software, network utilities that deprioritize OBS, outdated drivers, router or modem problems, and ISP-side issues as possible causes.
  5. If Ethernet and a reasonable bitrate do not help, investigate router or ISP stability and the service’s ingest path. A wired local connection does not prove the rest of the internet route is healthy.

OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. They do not by themselves prove that Wi-Fi is responsible. OBS connection troubleshooting · YouTube streaming tips

Should you buy an Ethernet cable or adapter?

If you can run a cable to your router or switch, trying a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical way to test whether the local wireless link is contributing to instability. Check that it reaches your setup and that your computer has a compatible port. If it does not, a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter may help; check compatibility with your device before buying.

FAQ

Is Ethernet better than Wi-Fi for live streaming?

Ethernet is generally the safer default for a stationary setup because it removes the local wireless link from the connection path. Wi-Fi may work well if it remains stable at the streaming location, but neither option guarantees that the full route to the platform will stay online.

Why does my stream keep disconnecting?

Possible causes include insufficient or unstable upload capacity, a problematic Wi-Fi link, router or modem problems, ISP routing, a server or ingest issue, VPN or security software, outdated drivers, and encoder settings. Check OBS’s connection indicators and troubleshoot the local link before concluding that Wi-Fi is the cause.

How much upload speed do I need to stream?

Your available upload bandwidth must exceed your configured stream bitrate and leave capacity for variation and other uploads. Twitch suggests bitrate plus about 30% upload headroom, while OBS suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed when troubleshooting. These are guidelines, not guarantees; check your platform’s requirements and your actual sustained upload.

Will Ethernet fix dropped frames?

It may help if the local Wi-Fi link is unstable, but it will not fix every cause. Dropped frames can also result from upload limits, the router or modem, ISP routing, the ingest server, software, or encoder configuration.

Can I stream reliably over Wi-Fi?

Yes, if Wi-Fi remains stable at the streaming device’s location and your available upload capacity supports the configured bitrate. Test under real streaming conditions; there is no universal Wi-Fi distance or signal threshold in the cited guidance that guarantees reliability.
