A radio station can stream to YouTube Live by routing its program audio and visuals through an encoder to a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio. YouTube handles ingest and viewer playback formats, but the station must maintain the program feed, internet connection, monitoring, and rights clearance. For a reliable setup, test the encoder and upload connection, leave bandwidth headroom, and plan for backup and recording.
How the YouTube Live signal path works
The basic path is station audio and visuals, then an encoder, then YouTube Live ingest, then playback for viewers. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder. The stream key is a credential that allows the encoder to send video to YouTube; treat it like a password and reset it if it is compromised.
YouTube’s Live Control Room manages the broadcast page and ingest configuration. It does not run the station’s radio playlist or provide radio playout automation. The station’s playback and encoding chain must produce the feed and keep it running.
Choose an encoder and operating approach
You can use encoder software, dedicated encoding hardware, or a hosted service. YouTube documents software encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but hardware is not mandatory. Compare options against your actual inputs, required ingest settings, unattended operation and recovery, monitoring, local recording, scheduling and live-show handoff, network needs, and total cost. The research here does not verify a particular product or vendor.

| Approach | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Software encoder | Check compatibility with your station’s audio and visual sources, and plan for the computer, software, network, and monitoring to stay operational. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Consider it if purpose-built operation or production requirements matter; verify inputs, codecs, and YouTube ingest settings before buying. |
| Hosted encoding or playout | Evaluate unattended operation, restart and failover behavior, monitoring, scheduling, compatibility, support, and cost. Verify service claims and terms independently. |
Setup steps
- Confirm the channel is ready to stream. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, and set it up ahead of time so you can test before launch.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream’s server URL and key into your encoder. Keep the key private; reset it and update the encoder if it is exposed.
- Route program audio and visuals. Feed the station’s program through its playback and encoding chain. Choose a visual element, such as a graphic or visualizer, that suits the program.
- Set and test encoder settings. Select codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and bitrate based on YouTube’s current recommendations and your connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS settings.
- Check the preview and stream health. Start the encoder, verify the preview in Live Control Room, and test the actual audio and visuals before confirming the broadcast. Check the watch page on relevant devices.
- Test recovery and recording. If continuity matters, test a backup encoder or recovery procedure. Keep a separate recording if you need a complete archive, and verify that it is being captured.
Bandwidth and encoder settings
Plan around upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube says the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams must fit within the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Test the real connection under operating conditions and account for other studio or office traffic. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates for the listed settings, not guarantees of stability. Choose settings for your actual visual feed and test them; a static graphic or simple visualizer may not need an ambitious resolution.
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Minimum H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder settings also cover AV1 and H.265, support up to 60 fps, and specify AAC or MP3 audio. Consult the current settings for your chosen codec and configuration, then monitor stream health during a test. The bitrate table describes video ingest; it does not establish one required bitrate for every audio-first program.

Automation, continuity, and monitoring
Keep the station’s continuing program separate in your planning from YouTube’s scheduled broadcast. Your playout system, encoder, network, and operator procedures determine whether the feed continues and recovers from faults. YouTube’s documentation does not promise indefinite operation or define a radio playlist scheduler.
Build an operating checklist that covers pre-launch tests, the Live Control Room preview and stream health, playback on relevant devices, backup-encoder failover, and local recording if an archive is needed. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls over to the backup.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need a full record of a longer broadcast, maintain and verify a separate recording workflow rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone.

Music rights and Content ID
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects material, a placeholder may replace the stream and the operator may be warned; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A station’s license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube warns that licensed content may still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.
Before streaming, confirm that permissions cover the relevant recordings and program elements, intended territories, monetization, and any replay or archive use. Keep records of permissions and ask rights holders how to allowlist the channel in Content ID. These steps address YouTube’s stated requirements but cannot guarantee that claims or interruptions will never occur.
FAQ
What do I need to send a radio station’s program to YouTube Live?
You need the station’s program audio and visuals routed through an encoder, plus a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio. Enter the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room in the encoder, then test the preview and stream health.

How much upload bandwidth does a YouTube radio stream need?
It depends on the encoder settings and whether you use a backup stream. YouTube recommends keeping the combined primary and backup bitrates within available upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom. Test upload speed under realistic conditions and account for shared connection traffic.
Does YouTube Live schedule a station’s playlist?
No. The Live Control Room configures and manages the broadcast and ingest; the station’s own playout and encoding arrangement must provide the program feed and scheduling.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 radio stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer broadcast, keep a separate recording workflow if you need a complete archive.

Can a licensed music stream still be interrupted?
Yes. YouTube says licensed third-party content may still trigger an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. Confirm the scope of your permissions and ask rights holders about Content ID allowlisting before launch.
How can a station test encoder failover?
YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Also check the preview, stream health, and any separate local recording.
