YouTube’s official guidance reviewed here does not state a blanket ban on continuous 24/7 streaming. However, streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR features such as pausing or rewinding may be limited or unavailable. If preserving a replay matters, make a local recording or plan shorter sessions.
Does YouTube allow 24/7 live streams?
The YouTube livestream terms reviewed do not set a general duration cap, so they do not establish a blanket prohibition on continuous streaming. This is not a guarantee that a particular stream will remain live: you still need to meet account eligibility requirements, follow YouTube’s policies, have the necessary content rights, and comply with applicable laws.
The important practical distinction is between keeping a broadcast live and preserving it for viewers afterward. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that live pause and rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams.
What happens to a long stream’s archive and DVR?
YouTube Help says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If you need a reliable YouTube replay, consider sessions under that threshold rather than relying on a single continuous run. DVR is different from the saved archive. DVR lets viewers pause or rewind a live broadcast; YouTube says these capabilities may be limited or unavailable after 12 hours, and some devices or older app versions may have lower limits. A saved recording does not restore rewind functionality during the live broadcast. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams

Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines, and you must have the necessary rights to use your content on Google services, including music rights where applicable. How to plan a long-running stream
- Choose a replay plan. If you need a YouTube archive, keep sessions under 12 hours or make a local recording. Do not assume a longer stream will be saved.
- Check eligibility and rights. Verify your channel, confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and clear music, video, and other third-party material.
- Set up your encoder carefully. Enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate fit within your available outbound bandwidth and suggests leaving 20% headroom. It warns that a network disruption could break a stream. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Test and monitor. Preview the feed, monitor audio and video, check that local archive files are growing, and confirm the stream is accessible. These precautions reduce avoidable problems but cannot guarantee an uninterrupted connection.
Choosing a streaming plan
| Plan | Replay preservation | Viewer rewind | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| One continuous run over 12 hours | YouTube says the stream may not be captured; keep a local recording if preservation matters. | DVR may be limited or unavailable. | Requires reliable connectivity and monitoring; no uninterrupted service is guaranteed. |
| Shorter sessions under 12 hours | YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but keep a local backup for important content. | DVR can still vary by device and app version. | Useful when a YouTube replay is important; plan how sessions will be managed. |
