Yes—you can keep a YouTube stream running while your personal computer is off, but another system must encode and send the video to YouTube. For prerecorded playlists, a cloud streaming service is usually the simplest option; a standalone encoder can suit some on-site setups, while a custom cloud pipeline is generally for technical teams. None of these options eliminates the need for an encoder and a connection to YouTube Live, and no setup can prevent every interruption.
Choose an approach for your video source
| Approach | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud streaming service | Prerecorded videos or playlists streamed without keeping your computer on | Playlist support, scheduling, run duration, restart behavior, storage, content limits, and current plan cost |
| Standalone hardware encoder | On-site production or a dedicated device that can handle the source and send it to YouTube | Whether the exact model supports your input, playback or scheduling workflow, and independent operation |
| Custom cloud media pipeline | Technical teams needing control over ingest, transcoding, redundancy, or cloud storage | Configuration, operating complexity, ongoing costs, and responsibility for monitoring |
YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. OneStream Live documents a workflow for scheduling a 24-hour YouTube stream from uploaded or stored video; its help page says this feature requires its Enterprise plan and is limited to 30 days. Those are provider-specific conditions, not general YouTube rules. Check each provider’s current features and terms before choosing.
YouTube’s encoder directory also lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder. Its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media for direct streaming to YouTube Live without a computer. Verify the exact model’s supported inputs and playback workflow before buying; not every encoder can loop prerecorded video on its own.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a more specialized building block. It accepts SRT or RTMP input, transcodes to HLS or DASH, supports backup inputs, and can save output to Cloud Storage. It may fit a technical team building a managed pipeline, but is likely more complex than a hosted playlist service for a typical creator.

Set up YouTube Live
- Make sure live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours; the channel must also be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or choose a stream. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it allows an encoder to send a stream to your channel.
- Enter both the server URL and stream key in your cloud service or encoder’s stream settings. YouTube’s setup instructions say, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Start with an unlisted test. Check that the intended video and audio appear in Live Control Room, then verify playback on the stream’s watch page before relying on a long run.
Choose settings and test reliability
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted form of RTMP, for secure ingestion. Its current settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in applicable workflows; YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose a bitrate appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure the sending connection has stable capacity.
| H.264 video setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended settings, not guaranteed minimums or a promise of uninterrupted playback. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation specifies requirements for encoder implementations, including the endpoint, port 443, and SNI. If you are configuring a custom encoder, follow the documentation for that implementation.

Before leaving a stream unattended, test the complete workflow and monitor playback and audio after launch. Use a wired connection where possible. Check what the provider does after a network or service interruption, whether it retries automatically, and how it reports errors. A cloud or hardware encoder can keep your personal computer off, but it cannot prevent all network, power, provider, or YouTube outages.
Plan for recordings and long streams
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will produce a complete archive. If you need a recording, use a separate recording feature where available and confirm the provider’s retention and export options.

Can YouTube keep streaming if my computer is off?
Yes, if another system—such as a cloud service or standalone encoder—continues encoding and sending the stream to YouTube. The computer can be off, but the stream still depends on that other system and its connection.

Can I stream prerecorded videos 24/7?
Cloud services can host and send prerecorded video, but playlist support, scheduling, maximum run duration, and plan requirements differ by provider. Confirm the current terms and test the intended workflow before relying on it.
What do I need to connect an encoder to YouTube?
You need the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, entered in the encoder’s settings. Keep the stream key private and test the stream before making it public.

Will a stream longer than 12 hours be archived?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer broadcasts, do not rely on automatic archiving for a complete recording; use and verify a separate recording option if you need to retain the video.
Do I need a custom cloud pipeline?
Usually not for a simple prerecorded playlist. A custom pipeline such as Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is intended for teams that need more control over ingest, transcoding, backup inputs, or storage.
