If your stream keeps going offline, first determine whether you are broadcasting and your feed is disconnecting, or watching and playback is stopping: those problems have different causes. Broadcasters should check connection stability, streaming software and platform metrics; viewers should compare streams, devices and networks, then check the service’s status before changing settings.

First: Are You Broadcasting or Watching?

A broadcast travels from the source device through streaming software, the local network and internet connection to the platform. Playback also depends on platform delivery, the viewer’s network, device and app or browser. A failure anywhere along the relevant path can interrupt a stream.

What you are doing Useful first checks
Broadcasting Platform status and broadcast metrics; connection stability; stream URL, key and server; encoder settings and computer capacity.
Watching Try another stream, device or network; check the platform’s status; restart the playback app or device and check the local connection.

If You Are Broadcasting: Why Does My Stream Keep Disconnecting?

Unstable or insufficient upload connectivity and streaming software configuration are early suspects. A stream key, server selection or encoder setting may be wrong; the computer may also be running beyond its capacity. A stream that starts and then disconnects is not, by itself, evidence that an account has been suspended. Twitch identifies internet connectivity and software configuration as common technical factors in this situation.

Streaming software frame statistics can help narrow down the problem. Streamlabs distinguishes lagged frames associated with compositor overload and high GPU use, skipped frames associated with encoder overload and often high CPU use, and dropped frames associated with network issues. These symptoms point to different investigations; they are not interchangeable.

Recovery Steps for Broadcasters

  1. Check platform status and broadcast metrics. Look for a current service issue and review the platform’s ingest or broadcast indicators, errors and other connection metrics.
  2. Check the local connection. A speed test is only a snapshot; it cannot prove that upload capacity stayed stable during a broadcast. Compare your bitrate with reliable upload capacity. If your equipment allows it, test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Restart network equipment if appropriate, and contact your ISP if instability or packet loss continues.
  3. Verify the destination and software configuration. Confirm the stream URL, key, selected server and input state. If the problem began after a setting change, restore a known-good, platform-recommended configuration and test again.
  4. Match the response to the frame symptom. For lagged frames associated with compositor or GPU load, reduce game or scene load. For skipped frames associated with encoder or CPU load, reduce encoding load or use an appropriate encoder option. For network-related dropped frames, investigate connection stability, server selection, bitrate and the ISP path.
  5. Escalate with evidence. Note when the interruption occurred, whether you were on wired or Wi-Fi, the platform status and connection metrics, and any software error. Share those details with platform or ISP support.

Streaming recommendations depend on the platform and workflow. Twitch’s current help guidance recommends at least 3–6 Mbps upload for streaming and notes that higher quality may require more. That is Twitch guidance, not a universal guarantee for other services.

Cloudflare’s live-stream troubleshooting guide gives separate settings for its own workflows: it advises checking for at least 20 Mbps upload for its upload-to-duration metric, suggests a fixed bitrate such as 8 Mbps in one troubleshooting context, and describes a keyframe interval between two and eight seconds, starting at four seconds. These are Cloudflare-specific recommendations, not settings to apply blindly to another platform.

If You Are Watching: Why Does a Stream Keep Buffering?

Playback problems can come from the broadcaster’s upload or encoder, service delivery, your internet connection or home network, or your device and app. Check whether one stream or several are affected, whether other devices on your network have the problem, and whether playback works on another network. If multiple streams or services fail across devices, a local network or ISP issue may be involved; a service outage is also possible.

Recovery Steps for Viewers

  1. Compare streams and devices. Try another stream and another device to see whether the issue is limited to one broadcast or one playback setup.
  2. Try another network if possible. This helps distinguish a local network problem from a device or service issue.
  3. Check official service status. If the platform reports an outage, extensive changes to your device or router may not help.
  4. Refresh the local setup. Restart the playback app or device, verify the connection, and improve Wi-Fi placement. Install relevant device updates if needed.
  5. Contact your ISP if the problem persists broadly. Ask about outages, router or modem faults, and connection configuration issues.
  6. Keep useful details. Note which streams, devices and networks are affected, when it happens, and whether service status reports an incident. Share this with platform or ISP support.

FAQ

Why does my stream keep disconnecting while I am broadcasting?

Unstable upload connectivity and streaming software configuration are common early checks. Also verify the stream URL, key, server, encoder settings, computer capacity and platform status. Use broadcast metrics and frame symptoms to narrow down the cause rather than assuming every interruption is a network problem.

Why does a stream keep buffering when I am watching?

Buffering can result from the broadcaster’s feed, service delivery, your connection or home network, or your device or app. Try a different stream, device or network and check the platform’s official status.

Does a speed test prove my upload is stable?

No. It gives a snapshot and does not establish that upload capacity stayed stable for the whole broadcast or rule out packet loss. Compare it with platform metrics and investigate the local network path if the problem continues.

Should I lower my bitrate or change my keyframe interval?

Use the platform’s recommended settings and match changes to the evidence. The cited bitrate and keyframe figures are Cloudflare-specific guidance, not universal values; a single speed-test result is not enough to choose a stable bitrate.

When should I contact platform support or my ISP?

Contact platform support when status, ingest metrics or software errors point to the service or broadcast configuration. Contact your ISP when connection instability or packet loss persists, especially if multiple devices or services are affected. Provide the time, affected devices and networks, metrics and error details.
