If your YouTube live stream keeps stopping, first check whether the problem affects you as the creator, one viewer, or several viewers. Then use the Live Control Room error messages and your encoder’s output to narrow down whether the cause is upload bandwidth, network stability, encoder health, settings, or a viewer-side connection. These seven troubleshooting branches are a practical guide, not an official YouTube ranking, and more than one issue can contribute.
1. Your upload bandwidth is too low
Your full outgoing stream bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth available to the streaming computer. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of your upload capacity available, and household or office traffic can reduce what is available to your stream. Account for both primary and backup feeds if you send both.
How to check and fix it:
- Run an upload speed test at the location and on the connection you plan to stream from; do not rely on download speed.
- Compare the measured upload capacity with the total bitrate configured in your encoder, leaving the recommended 20% headroom.
- Check whether other devices or people are using the connection. Retest when the network is less busy or reduce the encoder bitrate if it exceeds available capacity.
- If testing indicates a provider-side problem, contact your ISP.
YouTube Help recommends room between the total stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Its encoder bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not treat an encoder bitrate as a universal internet-speed requirement.
2. Your network is congested or dropping
A momentary connectivity disruption can break a stream. A shared network, router, service, or other connection problem may be responsible; switching to Ethernet can help test the path, but will not fix every network fault.

How to check and fix it:
- Test the stream on a reliable connection and note whether other devices are using bandwidth.
- Where practical, try a wired connection as a diagnostic comparison with Wi-Fi.
- Repeat the test during the time you intend to broadcast. If the connection remains unstable, investigate the router or contact your ISP.
3. Your encoder app is outdated or malfunctioning
The encoder sends the feed to YouTube. If it is outdated, reports an error, or produces an unhealthy output, the stream may fail even when the connection is adequate.
How to check and fix it:
- Update your encoder software and review its own preview and output status.
- Check the Live Control Room for errors while sending a test stream.
- Inspect the local recording or archive, if you are making one, to see whether the problem is present in the encoded output.
- If basic checks do not isolate the fault, try another compatible encoder or contact the encoder software’s support team.
4. Your computer or capture source is struggling
If the encoder’s local preview already looks or sounds wrong, check the computer and the audio or video sources routed into the encoder before assuming YouTube delivery is at fault. CPU load can affect encoding, but YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal CPU threshold or a guaranteed hardware fix.

How to check and fix it:
- Watch the encoder preview and check its error messages and CPU load during a test.
- Verify that the intended camera, microphone, and other audio/video sources are selected and functioning.
- Check the local recording or archive for the same defect. Use that evidence to distinguish a source or encoding problem from a viewer playback problem.
5. Your encoder settings do not match YouTube’s requirements
Use the error text in Live Control Room to identify configuration mismatches. Common issues include unsupported codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio/video stream count, keyframe interval, or mismatched primary and backup feeds.
YouTube Help recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; these are encoder ingest settings, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain them.

How to check and fix it:
- Open the Live Control Room and read the specific warning or error shown for the feed.
- Compare your encoder’s codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio/video streams, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current requirements.
- Correct the reported mismatch, including any difference between primary and backup feeds, then test again.
6. Your stream key or destination is wrong
A third-party encoder needs the correct stream key and destination information to send a feed YouTube can accept. For encoder startup failures, YouTube directs creators to refresh the stream key in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots or public instructions.
How to check and fix it:
- In Live Control Room, create or select the appropriate stream key.
- Replace the value in your encoder and verify that the destination settings match.
- Start a test stream and check Live Control Room for a successful incoming feed.
- If you use software that signs in to your account directly instead of using a stream key, contact that software’s support team for help.
7. The problem may be at the viewer’s end
Do not change your encoder just because one viewer reports an error. A problem affecting one viewer may be on that viewer’s device or connection; reports from multiple viewers on the same network may point to that shared network. Reports from viewers on different networks can indicate an encoder-side problem.

How to check and fix it:
- Ask whether one person or multiple viewers are affected and whether they share a network.
- Run a test before the event, review Live Control Room health errors, and monitor the feed while streaming.
- Check that your local archive is growing if you are recording one.
- If reports span different viewer networks, inspect the encoder output and stream health. If only one viewer is affected, have them check their own device and connection.
FAQ
How can I tell whether the stream problem is mine or a viewer’s?
Ask how many viewers are affected and whether they share a network. One viewer’s error can point to their device or connection, while problems reported across different networks can indicate an encoder-side issue. Check Live Control Room and your encoder output as well.
How much upload bandwidth should I leave available?
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity available beyond the total stream bitrate. Include other traffic on the shared connection and account for both feeds if you use primary and backup streams.

What keyframe interval does YouTube recommend?
YouTube Help recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check Live Control Room for any specific settings error on your feed.
Should I buy a more powerful computer or encoder?
First check whether the local encoder preview, CPU load, sources, settings, or Live Control Room errors identify a problem. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin streaming; consider different equipment only after diagnosing the fault.
