Better MC is the modpack people install when vanilla Minecraft starts to feel small but a full tech pack feels like homework. The Forge edition, BMC4, describes itself as “A Proper Vanilla+ Modpack” and packs more than 270 mods: over 100 quests, overhauled world generation, thousands of new dungeons and structures, new bosses, the Aether dimension and rideable dragons. It is a natural fit for a long-running friends’ server, as long as the host can keep up with all that new terrain.

Godlike.Host: a one-click BMC4 template, backups at no cost up to three a day, and server-pack uploads with loader choice for any other edition (its BMC4 page, 10 October 2026).

Our ranking in brief: WinterNode covers the most Better MC editions, BerryByte installs a named BMC4 build and transfers your world at no cost, Kinetic Hosting brings high-clock CPUs, and PebbleHost suits groups who want to size memory precisely.

Which Better MC edition will your server run?

“Better MC” is a family of packs, and server and players have to agree on edition and version. The official editions differ in loader and Minecraft version:

Editions, loaders and versions from the packs’ official Modrinth pages and WinterNode’s BMC6 page; Java from Mojang’s version data.

BMC4 is the edition Godlike.Host and BerryByte install by default, and every host in this ranking supports it, so it is the focus here. If your group prefers another edition, check that your host offers it before ordering.

What a Better MC server needs

  • Memory for exploration. Better MC’s appeal is new terrain and structures, and generating them is what loads a server. Hosts start BMC4 at 6 to 8 GB.
  • A fast processor. Chunk generation and busy mobs lean on Minecraft’s main thread, so clock speed shows up as smoothness.
  • The right Java. The 1.20.1 editions want Java 17, the 1.21.1 ones Java 21, and BMC6 Java 25.
  • Backups. A world full of dungeons cleared and bases built is worth protecting before every update.
  • Storage headroom. Thousands of structures and an ever-growing explored map make world files large, so fast NVMe storage with room to spare pays off.

1. Godlike.Host: a one-click BMC4 template

Godlike.Host offers Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 as a one-click template, on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 running Java 17, and suggests 6 GB on its requirements card. Its description fits how most groups play the pack: Vanilla+ gameplay that feels bigger and more adventurous without turning into a grind, ideal for a long-running SMP. It also makes a point server owners appreciate, that the pack rewards stable memory headroom and a host that copes when players scatter across the map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Beyond the template, Godlike lets you upload your own server pack in the panel or over SFTP and pick the matching loader, which is how you would run another edition. Backups are free and can run three times daily, attack filtering is standard, and there are 10 places to host the server.

Watch out: the one-click template is BMC4 only, so a group set on BMC5, BMC6 or a Fabric edition needs to upload that pack itself.

2. WinterNode: best for edition choice

WinterNode has a page for nearly every Better MC release, from the early BMC1 builds through BMC4, BMC5 and the new BMC6 on Minecraft 26.1.2, plus the Skyblock spin-off. For BMC4 it preinstalls version 61 with all Forge mods, cites more than 17 million CurseForge downloads, and defaults to 8 GB, naming 6 to 8 GB as normal depending on players and view distance. For BMC6 it widens that to 6 to 10 GB.

CPU time, disk space and MySQL databases are all unmetered, and upgrades are prorated.

Watch out: WinterNode backs servers up every 12 hours, so a busy evening’s progress can sit unprotected until the next run; take a manual backup before big changes.

3. BerryByte: best for a named build and free migration

BerryByte installs Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 version 59 after checkout and is explicit that it is not BMC5, BMC3 or a Fabric edition, which spares your group the most common joining error. Coming from another host? BerryByte will migrate the world and settings for free from a backup you send. Every plan includes backups, and its memory advice starts at 8 GB and rises to 12 GB once several people roam new biomes at the same time, and new purchases carry a seven-day full refund.

Watch out: v59 trails the v61 that WinterNode lists, so check which build your players should install.

4. Kinetic Hosting: best for high-clock CPUs

Kinetic Hosting lists BMC4 alongside Better MC 2, 3, 5 and Skyblock order pages. Its BMC4 description lines up with the official one, 270+ mods, 100+ quests, the Aether, rideable dragons, waystones and a minimap, and the pack installs from the Kinetic Panel, which tests every modpack it offers. Its fastest hardware uses Ryzen 9 9950X processors that turbo up to 5.7 GHz, with unlimited player slots, five backup slots and crash notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out: Kinetic suggests 12 GB for BMC4, the highest figure here, and its page leaves the installed build unstated.

Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

5. PebbleHost: best for exact memory sizing

PebbleHost has a dedicated BetterMC page and says it runs both Forge- and Fabric-based Better MC servers, stressing that the pack’s world generation, structures and mobs need strong CPUs, fast memory and quick storage to hold a steady tick rate. Its Budget range bills memory per gigabyte, and its Premium range adds Ryzen 9-class hardware, a one-click installer and daily plus hourly backups.

Watch out: the Budget range comes without backups or the installer, and the BetterMC page gives no memory figure, so size the plan from the other hosts’ advice.

One more name you may see: Better MC’s official pages promote BisectHosting as a partner. It is not ranked here, because its prices only appear in a live browser session, so we had no checkable US list price on 10 October.

Built-in world sharing or a real server?

The official BMC4 page lists built-in, free world sharing, so a group can play together straight from one player’s game. That works for a casual evening, but the world is only online while the host player is, and that player’s computer carries the whole load. A dedicated server keeps the world available around the clock, handles more players, and frees everyone to log in on their own schedule, which is what a long-running Better MC survival world usually needs.

Setting up a Better MC server, step by step

  1. Agree on the edition and version, for example BMC4 v61 on Forge 1.20.1.
  2. Choose a plan of 6–8 GB for a handful of players, close to where most of them live.
  3. Deploy Better MC from the host’s catalogue, or upload a server pack if you chose a different edition.
  4. Confirm the build in the console before anyone joins.
  5. Enable the whitelist, then add each friend by name.
  6. Players install the same build in their launcher and connect from Multiplayer.

What about Better MC Skyblock?

Better MC also has a Skyblock edition, BMCS, built on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. It is a different pack from BMC4, with its own world style, so plan a separate server for it rather than an update to an existing world. WinterNode and Kinetic Hosting both list it, so check your host’s catalogue if your group wants the skyblock take on Better MC.

How much RAM does a Better MC server need?

For BMC4, hosts span a range rather than agreeing on one number. Godlike’s card says 6 GB, WinterNode and BerryByte start at 8 GB, BerryByte steps up to 12 GB for groups that roam together, and Kinetic Hosting recommends 12 GB from the outset. The variable is exploration: a group that stays near its base needs far less than one that fans out to raid new dungeons every night.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical plan is 6 to 8 GB for two to four players, 10 GB for five-plus players who explore heavily, and 12 GB for a busy community. If the server stutters while plenty of memory sits free, look at the processor before buying more RAM.

Keeping editions and versions in sync

Mismatched editions are the classic Better MC support ticket. A BMC5 client cannot join a BMC4 server, and neither can a Fabric BMC2 client, even though BMC2 and BMC4 share Minecraft 1.20.1. Pick one edition and one version for the group, tell everyone exactly which to install through the CurseForge app or the Modrinth App, and update the server and all players together after a backup. When a host lists an older build than the latest, install the host’s build until it updates.

Updating Better MC safely

Better MC keeps receiving builds, and hosts do not always carry the same one: BerryByte names v59 for BMC4 while WinterNode lists v61. Before moving to a new build, read its changelog, stop the server and take a full backup, then bring the server and all players onto it on the same day. Keep the old backup until you have walked around the world on the new build, because structure and world-generation changes are where a modded update is most likely to surprise you.

FAQ

Which Better MC edition should a server use?

BMC4 on Forge 1.20.1 is the safe default: every host here supports it, and it is the one Godlike.Host offers as a one-click template. Choose another edition only if your whole group wants it.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Can BMC2 and BMC4 players join the same server?

No. Both use Minecraft 1.20.1, but BMC2 is a Fabric pack and BMC4 is a Forge pack, so the mod sets do not match.

How much RAM does BMC4 need on a server?

Two to four players are comfortable on 6–8 GB, and groups that explore heavily want 10 to 12 GB. Those figures come straight from the hosts’ recommendations above.

Is Better MC good for a multiplayer server?

Yes. Godlike.Host’s page describes BMC4 as built for friend groups who want a long-running SMP, and its exploration-heavy design gives a group plenty to do together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I add extra mods to a Better MC server?

Carefully, if at all. Godlike’s own FAQ advises using the modpack as provided to avoid conflicts, and any mod you add on the server must be added for every player too.

Which Java version do I need?

BMC2 and BMC4 (Minecraft 1.20.1) need Java 17; BMC3 and BMC5 (1.21.1) need Java 21; BMC6 (26.1.2) needs Java 25.

Does Better MC support shaders on a server?

Shaders are a client-side feature: each player’s graphics card renders them, and the server never touches them. The official BMC4 page lists shader support for players.
