An SMP (survival multiplayer) server is the classic way to play Minecraft with friends: one shared world that stays online, where everyone builds, trades and survives together. The host you pick decides how easy the server is to set up, how safe your world is when something goes wrong, and how well it holds up as the group grows.

Godlike.Host: a ready-made Paper SMP in under a minute, free world saves up to three times a day and DDoS protection across 10 locations (its pages, 10 October 2026).

Short answer: PebbleHost is the pick if you want hourly backups and unlimited player slots. BerryByte suits groups moving an existing world, because migration is free. Hostinger fits players who want full root access on a VPS.

What a good SMP host needs

An SMP lives or dies on its world. Friends put weeks into builds, so the features that matter most protect that work and keep the server easy to run:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Backups you can roll back to. Griefing, a bad plugin update or a lost chest happens on every long-running SMP. Frequent automatic backups turn a disaster into a five-minute restore.
  • A plugin installer. Most SMPs run Paper with a handful of plugins for claims, permissions and logging. One-click installs save you from hunting down files.
  • DDoS protection. Public and semi-public SMPs attract attacks. Protection should be on by default, not an add-on.
  • A location near your players. Lower ping means smoother building and fewer rubber-banding complaints.
  • Room to grow. Groups get bigger. You want to add RAM or players without moving the world to a new server.

We ranked each host on those five points, using what each provider states on its own website. Prices are in one place, the comparison table below, so you can compare like for like.

1. Godlike.Host: a ready-made Paper SMP in under a minute

Godlike.Host is a game hosting company from Romania, known mainly for Minecraft, and it has a page built around SMP servers. You pick a ready-made Paper 1.21.1 setup, such as Private SMP, Hub / Lobby, SkyBlock / OneBlock, Creative / Building or Anarchy, and the server launches in under a minute with Java, ports and storage already configured.

The features an SMP needs come as standard. Every server is backed up for free up to three times a day, with restores whenever you need them, and gets DDoS protection and a choice of 10 locations: US West Coast, US East Coast, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine, Finland and Singapore. The panel installs plugins and modpacks, schedules restarts and backups, and gives friends role-based access, so you can let a trusted player manage the server without handing over the account. You can also manage the server through Godlike’s Discord bot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is a free 2 GB Minecraft plan for trying the panel before you pay. Paid plans start at 2 GB and add every location and the full game panel.

Good to know: the free plan has to be extended every few hours and runs in one location, so treat it as a trial rather than a home for your SMP.

2. PebbleHost: best for frequent backups

PebbleHost’s Premium plans stand out on backups. On top of free daily backups, they add hourly incremental backups, so a griefed base can be restored to the hour rather than the day. Premium also brings a one-click installer covering around 12,000 modpacks and locations in North America, Europe, Australia, Singapore and India. Every PebbleHost plan has unlimited player slots, DDoS protection and support through Discord around the clock, and plugins such as LuckPerms, Dynmap and CoreProtect can use extra databases.

The Budget range is priced by the gigabyte, which makes it the cheapest way here to start small and add RAM as the group grows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good to know: Budget plans list no backups, so choose Premium for an SMP you care about.

3. BerryByte: best for moving an existing world

BerryByte is a strong choice if your SMP already exists on another host. Migration from any host is free and setup help is included, so the move does not fall on you. Every server comes with DDoS protection and automatic daily backups, and the panel installs modpacks from Modrinth, CurseForge or FTB, or switches the server type to Vanilla or Paper.

BerryByte also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee, which gives a group time to check performance before committing.

Good to know: backups are daily rather than hourly, and the entry price sits above the cheapest options here.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Good to know: weekly backups are less frequent than an active SMP needs, so take manual snapshots before big changes. Hostinger’s lowest prices also require long billing terms.

5. Server.pro: best for trying before you pay

Server.pro offers a free trial with no credit card required, which is handy for testing a group’s interest before paying for a server. Paid plans include automatic backups, scheduled jobs and a modpack installer that supports CurseForge, Modrinth and Feed The Beast, and you can upgrade or downgrade at any time.

Good to know: the smallest paid plan starts at 8 GB, which is more than a small friends’ SMP needs, so the entry cost is higher than per-gigabyte hosts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Akliz: best for a simple modded SMP

Akliz keeps SMP management simple, whether you run a vanilla-style world or a complex modded one. One dashboard handles backups, the console, restarts and world files, and a large modpack selection covers popular packs. You can run more than one server and keep full control of the files. Memory is priced by the gigabyte.

Good to know: Akliz publishes fewer details about its locations and backup schedule than the hosts above, so ask its support before you move a world you care about.

How to pick the right plan for your SMP

Start with the smallest plan that runs your setup, then upgrade. If you are still choosing between SMP and other server types, our full ranking of Minecraft server hosting compares more hosts side by side.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A small vanilla or Paper SMP for a few friends runs comfortably on an entry plan. Plugins, more players and a large explored world all add load, and every host here lets you add RAM without starting a new world.

Pick the location closest to most of your players, not to you. If your group is spread across continents, choose a host with a location in between, or one that lets you move the server later.

Turn on automatic backups on day one, and take a manual backup before every plugin or version update. Most SMP disasters are recoverable if a recent backup exists.

Vanilla or Paper for an SMP?

Vanilla is Minecraft exactly as Mojang ships it. It is the purest experience, but it cannot run plugins. Paper is a high-performance server for the same game that also runs Bukkit and Spigot plugins, which is why most SMPs use it. Players still join with the normal Java Edition game and install nothing extra.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Godlike.Host’s SMP setups start on Paper 1.21.1, and BerryByte’s server type selector switches between Vanilla and Paper in the panel.

Plugins most SMPs start with

  • LuckPerms manages ranks and permissions, so you decide who can build, use commands or moderate.
  • CoreProtect logs every block placed or broken and rolls back griefing by player, area or time.
  • GriefPrevention lets players claim land with a golden shovel, so nobody else can build or open chests inside it.
  • EssentialsX adds everyday commands such as homes, warps, spawn and private messages.
  • Dynmap or BlueMap renders a live map of the world that players open in a browser.

Add them one at a time and restart between each, so you know which plugin caused a problem if one appears. Take a backup first.

How to set up an SMP on Godlike.Host

  1. Choose the Private SMP setup on Godlike.Host’s SMP page. It starts on Paper 1.21.1.
  2. Pick the location closest to most of your players from its 10 locations.
  3. Launch the server. It is ready in under a minute, with Java, ports and storage set up for you.
  4. Add plugins from the panel’s plugin installer, starting with permissions and land claims.
  5. Schedule restarts and backups in the panel’s scheduler.
  6. Invite your friends, and give trusted players a role so they can help run the server without your account.

Settings worth changing on day one

A few minutes in the server settings saves hours of trouble later:

  • Turn on the whitelist. Run /whitelist on and add each friend with /whitelist add <name>, so only your group can join, even if the address leaks.
  • Lower the view and simulation distance. In server.properties, smaller view-distance and simulation-distance values cut lag noticeably on smaller plans, and most players barely notice the change.
  • Check spawn protection. The spawn-protection setting stops non-operators from breaking blocks around spawn. Keep it on for public worlds, or set it to 0 if friends should build at spawn.
  • Agree on the rules early. Decide on difficulty and whether the keepInventory game rule is on before the world fills up, because changing them later starts arguments.

FAQ

What is a Minecraft SMP server?

SMP stands for survival multiplayer. It is a shared survival world that stays online, so players can join whenever they like and keep building on the same map. Most SMPs run Paper with a few plugins for land claims, permissions and logging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run an SMP server for free?

Yes, for testing. Godlike.Host offers a free 2 GB Minecraft plan and Server.pro offers a free trial without a credit card. Free tiers carry limits, such as having to extend the server every few hours, so a long-running SMP belongs on a paid plan.

Which SMP host has the most frequent backups?

PebbleHost’s Premium plans add hourly incremental backups to free daily backups. Godlike.Host backs up every server for free up to three times a day, and BerryByte backs up daily.

Do I need plugins for an SMP?

No, a vanilla SMP works fine. Most groups add a few plugins over time, such as a claims plugin to stop griefing and a logging plugin like CoreProtect to see who broke what. A host with a one-click plugin installer makes that easy.

Can friends help run the server?

Yes. Godlike.Host’s panel gives friends role-based access, so a trusted player can restart the server or manage players without using your account.
