Neither zero-day exploit analysis nor cybersecurity careers are shown by the available figures to typically pay $300,000 a year. The $300,000 number is a conditional maximum reward Google reported for qualifying critical vulnerabilities in top-tier apps—not a salary or predictable annual income. The closest wage benchmark here is broader: U.S. computer and information research scientists had a May 2025 median annual wage of $140,300, but that occupation is not specific to cybersecurity or vulnerability research.
First, separate salary from a vulnerability reward
A salary is recurring employment compensation. A vulnerability reward is a contingent payment: a researcher must find and report a qualifying issue, and the program decides whether it meets its rules and severity criteria. A maximum award is a ceiling, not a promise that a researcher will receive that amount—or receive any award in a given year.
Google reported that its vulnerability reward programs awarded nearly $12 million to more than 600 researchers in 2024. That is an aggregate across its programs, not an individual income figure. In its 2025 report, Google listed a maximum Mobile Vulnerability Reward Program award of up to $300,000 for critical vulnerabilities in top-tier apps, and a Chrome award ceiling of up to $250,000 at the time of the report. Those ceilings are program-specific and conditional. Google’s 2024 program review does not establish typical individual earnings or a recurring annual payout.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $300,000 | Google’s 2025-reported maximum Mobile VRP award for qualifying critical vulnerabilities in top-tier apps. Google Security Blog | A salary, a typical reward, or annual income a researcher can count on. |
| Up to $250,000 | Google’s reported Chrome award ceiling at the time of its 2025 report. Google Security Blog | A typical payment or a comparison of employee compensation. |
| $140,300 median annual wage; highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $230,630 | U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures for computer and information research scientists in May 2025. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook | A salary range for zero-day analysts or cybersecurity workers specifically. The occupation includes research scientists beyond cybersecurity. |
| US$30,000–50,000; US$50,000–300,000 | Historical estimates cited in ENISA’s December 2018 paper, drawing on RAND research, for prominent zero-day exploit prices in black markets and grey or government markets, respectively. ENISA, Economics of vulnerability disclosure | Current verified prices, legitimate career salaries, or a recommended way to monetize research. |
The BLS page was last modified August 27, 2026, and its cited wage figures are for May 2025. They are a U.S. occupational benchmark, not a direct head-to-head salary comparison with vulnerability research. The sources do not establish typical total compensation of $300,000 for either path.

How zero-day research differs from broader security work
Vulnerability research and exploit development
This is specialized technical work focused on finding previously unknown vulnerabilities, understanding how software behaves, and demonstrating the risk in a controlled way. SANS describes tasks including reverse engineering and debugging, fuzz testing, code analysis, and crafting exploits. Its role description says researchers work to find unknown vulnerabilities in applications and devices used by organizations and consumers. SANS Institute: Vulnerability Researcher & Exploit Developer
The label “zero-day exploit analyst” can suggest a single standardized job, but the duties vary by employer. Some roles emphasize discovering flaws; others focus on exploit development, product security, or evaluating vulnerabilities. A vulnerability reward program is another route to report a finding, but participating as a researcher is not the same as holding a salaried research position.

Traditional cybersecurity is not one career
Broader security work spans roles with different day-to-day responsibilities. Application penetration testing assesses software for exploitable weaknesses; purple teaming exercises how offensive and defensive teams work together; operational and defensive roles may center on monitoring, incident response, security engineering, or risk. SANS distinguishes vulnerability research from application penetration testing and purple teaming, while the BLS wage category cited above is a research-scientist occupation rather than a general cybersecurity salary table.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBecause job scope and compensation definitions differ, a fair comparison needs a specific role, employer, location, seniority, and whether the number means base salary or total compensation. The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison of zero-day researchers against traditional security roles.

Which path fits your strengths and income needs?
Consider vulnerability research if you want deep technical investigation
- You enjoy tracing complex software behavior, debugging, reverse engineering, and investigating edge cases.
- You are prepared for long periods of exploration where a finding is uncertain and may not qualify for a reward.
- You can demonstrate your work responsibly and follow the rules of the employer, product owner, or disclosure program.
Consider a broader security role if you want a wider set of job options
- You prefer work such as securing applications, testing defenses, responding to incidents, or improving security operations.
- You want to build experience across systems and teams rather than specializing immediately in unknown vulnerabilities.
- You are comparing employment opportunities and can evaluate pay using the same geography, seniority, and compensation basis.
These are differences in work and risk profile, not a guarantee that either route pays more. The available wage evidence is not sufficiently role-specific to rank the two paths by typical salary.

How to build evidence of ability
- Learn the foundations: develop fluency in programming, operating systems, networking, debugging, and secure software concepts relevant to the kind of systems you want to study.
- Practice in authorized settings: use intentionally vulnerable software, labs, or programs whose rules explicitly permit testing. Do not probe systems without authorization.
- Document reproducible findings: explain the affected component, conditions, impact, and safe reproduction steps. A clear, responsible report is evidence of analytical skill even when it does not produce a large award.
- Choose training for a defined gap: SANS lists SEC660, Advanced Penetration Testing, Exploit Writing, and Ethical Hacking, and SEC760, Advanced Exploit Development for Penetration Testers, as advanced courses aligned with this role. These are examples of specialized training, not prerequisites or guarantees of employment.
How to assess a $300,000 claim
- Ask what the number represents: recurring base salary, total compensation, a one-time bounty, or a program’s maximum award.
- Check the conditions: eligibility, severity threshold, affected product tier, program rules, and whether the amount is a ceiling or a reported payment.
- Check the comparison: geography, year, occupation, seniority, and compensation definition must align before comparing two figures.
- Treat old exploit-market estimates as historical context only: ENISA’s 2018 figures describe estimated prices in different markets, not modern salary data or legitimate annual earnings.
