To edit a photo already placed in a Pages document, select it in Pages for Mac, open the Image tab in the Format Image sidebar, and click Edit in Pixelmator Pro. Make your changes in Pixelmator Pro, then choose Save to Pages or press Command-S. The edited image updates in the Pages document.
How to edit a Pages image in Pixelmator Pro

Open the document in Pages for Mac and click the image you want to change.

In the Format Image sidebar, select the Image tab.

Click Edit in Pixelmator Pro. The selected image opens in Pixelmator Pro.

Make the desired changes to the image.

In Pixelmator Pro, choose Save to Pages or press Command-S. Pages displays the edited image in the document.

Apple’s Pages for Mac guide describes this as editing an image in a Pages document: the handoff does not open the whole Pages document as a layout or text-editing project in Pixelmator Pro.
Know what happens to Pixelmator Pro layers
Some Pages image operations require a Pixelmator image to be converted to a regular image. Apple gives Super Resolution as an example and says the conversion flattens Pixelmator layer data. If Pages prompts you to convert the image, consider whether you need those editable layers before clicking Convert Image.

Auto Crop, Image Generation, and Super Resolution are identified in Apple’s guide as Apple Creator Studio features. They are separate from the basic Edit in Pixelmator Pro and save-back workflow.
Pages editing and Photos editing save to different places
Use the Pages handoff when the image is already in a Pages document and you want the result there. Pixelmator Pro also has a separate workflow for images in the Photos library; that workflow saves changes to the Photos original, not to a Pages document.

Pages document: In Pages, choose Edit in Pixelmator Pro, then save with Save to Pages or Command-S.

Photos library: Apple documents opening a Photos image in Pixelmator Pro and choosing File > Modify Original in Photos. A sidecar file is used by default to preserve edits as layers. The Photos extension also offers Preserve Edits and Save Flattened choices.
