When an AI coding agent changes code and TypeScript reports errors, start with the complete compiler diagnostic—not another guess. Trace the mismatch to its underlying property or value, confirm the project configuration and command, then ask for the smallest correction and verify it with the project’s real type-check and tests. Some errors expose an unstated requirement or an inaccurate type, not simply a bad edit.
Why an agent’s TypeScript fix can make things worse
An agent works from the code and context it can see. It may misunderstand the intended behavior, miss a relevant type or runtime constraint, or make a change that looks plausible but does not fit the application. GitHub’s guidance for Copilot agents cautions that generated code can be inaccurate and should be reviewed and tested; that is a reason to verify agent output, not evidence that one agent performs better or worse than another. GitHub Copilot Agents: Responsible Use
The compiler is more useful than a generic “doesn’t compile” report. TypeScript checks whether one type can be used where another is required, and that relationship is directional: the source type must satisfy the expected type. A long diagnostic may explain the failure in layers, from the attempted assignment down to the incompatible property or member. TypeScript: Understanding Errors

1. Capture the complete compiler diagnostic
Copy the full error, including its code, file, line, and any indented or nested explanation. Do not reduce it to “TypeScript is broken” or paste only the first line. The explanation often identifies successive reasons an assignment failed. TypeScript says, “Whenever TypeScript finds an error, it tries to explain what went wrong in as much detail as possible.” TypeScript: Understanding Errors

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Find the exact mismatch—and check what the data can actually do
For an error such as “Type X is not assignable to type Y,” identify which value is being supplied and what the receiving code expects. Follow the diagnostic to the deepest incompatible property or element type. Then check the application’s data contract and runtime code: a field that can genuinely be missing or null usually calls for a guard and an accurate type, not an assertion that merely promises the value exists.
- Null or undefined: Determine whether absence is possible. If it is, handle that case and model it. If it is not, trace where the type became optional or nullable.
- Unknown property or missing member: Compare the object’s inferred shape with the expected interface. Check both for an unsupported key on an object literal and for a missing or inaccurate declaration.
- Import or module-resolution failure: Check the project’s module settings, file extensions, package declarations, and bundler or runtime behavior. The right correction depends on the toolchain.
3. Confirm which project and command are being checked
Inspect the relevant package.json scripts and tsconfig.json, then run the same local command used by the team or CI. A repository can have more than one config or script; the command and file selection determine what is checked. Pay particular attention to strictness, null handling, and module-resolution options. With strictNullChecks enabled, TypeScript treats null and undefined as distinct types, making missing-value cases visible in ways a looser configuration may not. TypeScript: TSConfig Reference

4. Give the agent evidence and a bounded task
Include the complete diagnostic, relevant source and type definitions, intended behavior, and the command that reproduces the failure. Ask the agent to explain the mismatch first, make the smallest root-cause change, and say which check it will run. This is a practical way to use the compiler’s detailed output and an IDE agent’s ability to inspect files and run commands; it is not a prompt guaranteed to work or a workflow with a verified success rate. GitHub documents IDE workflows in which Copilot can answer questions and work with project files and commands. GitHub Docs: Asking GitHub Copilot Questions in Your IDE

5. Run the checks and review the patch
Run the actual type-check command, relevant tests, and any build needed to validate runtime behavior. Inspect the diff for changes that silence the complaint without correcting the underlying model. Broad casts, any, ignored diagnostics, and relaxed compiler settings need a clear justification because they can remove useful checks rather than resolve the mismatch. TypeScript’s strictness options strengthen what the checker can guarantee; GitHub likewise advises careful review and testing of Copilot-generated code. TypeScript: TSConfig Reference GitHub Copilot Agents: Responsible Use
Do not treat emitted JavaScript as proof that type checking passed. TypeScript can emit output despite errors unless configured to prevent it; noEmitOnError stops output updates when errors occur. Types are erased from JavaScript, so runtime execution, emitted output, build status, and a clean type check are related but distinct signals. TypeScript Handbook: The Basics

What common TypeScript failures are telling you
“Type X is not assignable to type Y”
The value on the source side does not meet the receiving type’s requirements. Read the nested explanation to find the actual property, parameter, or element that differs. Establish the intended data shape before considering a cast.
“Null” or “undefined” is not assignable
Check whether the value can be absent in real use, then either handle that case or correct the type that introduced optionality. Remember that strictNullChecks controls whether null and undefined are treated as distinct types by the checker. TypeScript: TSConfig Reference

An object has an unknown property or lacks a member
Compare the actual object shape with the declared type. The object may contain an unsupported key, or the receiving declaration may not describe the data the application intends to accept. TypeScript’s error guide illustrates excess-property diagnostics. TypeScript: Understanding Errors
An import or module cannot be resolved
Check the project’s module mode and resolution settings, extensions, package declarations, and how its bundler or runtime loads modules. A fix that works under one toolchain may not work under another; consult the project’s configuration rather than applying a universal import rule. TypeScript: TSConfig Reference
The program runs, but the type checker fails
Runtime success does not establish that the code satisfies its declared types. Nor does emitted JavaScript establish a clean type check: output may be generated while diagnostics remain, depending on compiler settings. Run the project’s type-check command separately and investigate its result. TypeScript Handbook: The Basics
Quick Recap
What a clean fix looks like
- The change addresses the underlying mismatch instead of hiding it with an unsupported assertion or suppressed diagnostic.
- Any null or missing-value behavior matches the application’s actual data contract.
- The project’s own type-check command and relevant tests pass, with the diff reviewed for unintended behavior.
