The iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra start at nearly the same U.S. price for 256GB: $1,299 for Apple’s phone and $1,299.99 for Samsung’s at launch. The meaningful differences are in camera approach, storage choices, Android versus iOS, and how each phone fits your existing devices—not a proven winner in camera quality or battery life.
U.S. launch prices compared by storage
At the 256GB tier, launch pricing is effectively even. The figures below are U.S. launch prices, not guaranteed current checkout prices. Apple’s 256GB starting price comes from its September 9, 2026 announcement; Samsung’s 256GB launch price was reported in a dated comparison. Check the seller’s current listing before buying.
| Storage | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,299 (Apple U.S. starting price) Apple announcement | $1,299.99 (U.S. launch price, as reported in a dated comparison) Dated comparison |
| 512GB | $1,499 (dated launch-price reporting) Dated comparison | $1,499.99 (dated launch-price reporting) Dated comparison |
| 1TB | $1,899 (dated launch-price reporting) Dated comparison | $1,799.99 (dated launch-price reporting) Dated comparison |
| 2TB | Available; price not stated in the cited announcement Apple announcement | Not listed by Samsung Samsung launch specifications |
The 512GB launch prices differ by less than a dollar, while the dated report puts the 1TB Samsung model $99.01 below Apple’s. That higher-tier difference should not be confused with a current offer or treated as an enduring price. Samsung’s U.S. purchase page showed a temporary 256GB reduction from $1,399.99 to $1,199.99 when checked; that was a volatile offer, not its launch price or a dependable ongoing price. Camera hardware: variable aperture or more telephoto options?
iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple highlights a 48MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture. That is a hardware feature intended to vary the lens opening; the announcement does not establish that the iPhone takes better photos than Samsung’s phone. Apple announcement

Galaxy S26 Ultra
Samsung specifies a 200MP wide camera, a 50MP ultra-wide, a 50MP 5x telephoto, and a 10MP 3x telephoto. Samsung describes 10x as “optical-quality” zoom; that is not the same as a dedicated 10x optical lens. The listed telephoto hardware is a reason to consider the Ultra if you want multiple stated zoom ranges, but megapixel counts alone do not establish image quality. Samsung launch specifications
No controlled head-to-head image testing is established here, so choose based on the camera features you expect to use rather than a claimed overall photo winner.

Display and handling
Samsung lists a 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate and a phone weight of 214g. The cited Apple announcement confirms the iPhone model but does not provide directly comparable display measurements or body weight, so a numerical screen-size or weight verdict is not supported here. Consider the Ultra’s documented large display and weight against how comfortable a large phone feels in your hand; check Apple’s technical specifications for the iPhone’s exact measurements before making a size-based choice. Battery: published claims are not a head-to-head test
Samsung states that the Galaxy S26 Ultra offers up to 31 hours of video playback. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max has increased battery life but does not give an equivalent runtime figure in the cited announcement. Because the claims are not measured and reported on a comparable basis, they do not establish which phone lasts longer in everyday use. Samsung launch specifications · Apple announcement

Which phone makes more sense for you?
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if
- You want iOS or your other devices and services already fit Apple’s ecosystem.
- You value Apple’s announced variable-aperture 48MP Fusion main camera.
- You need a listed 2TB storage option; Samsung’s published S26 Ultra configurations stop at 1TB.
Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if
- You prefer Android or rely on Samsung devices and services.
- You want the listed combination of 3x and 5x telephoto cameras and Samsung’s stated 10x optical-quality zoom.
- You want Samsung’s specified 6.9-inch QHD+ display and 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and are comfortable with its listed 214g weight.
Neither set of specifications settles real-world camera or battery performance. For a close decision, give more weight to the operating system you want to use every day, your preferred camera focal lengths, the storage tier you need, and the price you can actually get in your market.
