To speed up a slow Windows PC, first check what is consuming its resources, then try the fixes that match the symptoms: restart, install relevant updates, scan for malware, free storage, and reduce unnecessary startup or background activity. These steps are free and reversible in most cases, but no single fix works for every PC—and older hardware may limit the improvement.
Start by identifying what is slow
A PC can feel slow because of low storage, too many apps running, outdated software, malware, or aging hardware. Microsoft recommends trying more than one remedy because several factors can contribute at once. Its guide does not promise a particular speed increase, and neither should you expect a fixed result.
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. On the Processes tab, look at CPU, Memory, and Disk use while the slowdown is happening. The Startup apps tab shows which apps launch at sign-in and their startup impact. Close or end only apps you recognize; ending an unknown process can interrupt work or system functions. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guide and Startup apps instructions.

1. Close apps and browser tabs you are not using
Many open apps and browser tabs compete for memory and processing time, especially on a PC with limited resources. Save any work first, then close what you do not need and check whether response improves.

2. Restart the PC
If the computer remains sluggish after closing apps, use Start > Power > Restart. A restart clears the current session and can resolve temporary slowdowns. Save open work before restarting.
3. Install relevant Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and install available updates that apply to your PC. Microsoft says updates can include fixes and performance improvements. Restart if Windows asks. Optional driver updates are available on some systems, but do not install one just because it is listed; use it when it is relevant to a device or problem you are addressing.
4. Scan for malware with Windows Security
Malware can consume CPU and disk resources. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Quick scan to start with a quick scan. Follow Windows Security’s guidance if it detects a threat. Microsoft explains this and other performance steps in its performance guide.

5. Check storage and remove files you do not need
Go to Settings > System > Storage to see how much space is in use. Review Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations, and inspect the selections before confirming deletion. Be especially careful with personal files and previous Windows installation files; removing them may be irreversible or remove an option to return to a previous installation.
Windows Storage Sense can remove unneeded temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Review its options before enabling or running it. Microsoft’s Storage settings guide describes these tools. Its separate guide to freeing space for Windows updates covers update-related storage needs.
6. Uninstall apps you no longer use
Remove apps you recognize and no longer need through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label or layout may vary by Windows version). Uninstalling can free storage and reduce background activity. Do not remove unfamiliar components simply because their names are unclear; they may be needed by Windows or another device.

7. Disable unnecessary startup apps
In Task Manager, open Startup apps, review each app’s name and startup impact, and disable only apps you recognize that do not need to launch when you sign in. This can shorten startup and reduce the work Windows does immediately after sign-in. Keep apps you rely on at startup, such as security, synchronization, or device utilities. Microsoft provides steps in Configure Startup applications in Windows.

8. Limit background activity where the app allows it
Some Windows apps offer a background-permission setting that controls whether they can keep working when you are not using them. Check the settings for apps that do not need to run in the background. The location and availability of this control depend on the app and Windows version; it does not govern every desktop program.
9. Reduce unnecessary notifications
Turn off notifications that interrupt you or that you do not need in Settings > System > Notifications. This is primarily a way to reduce interruptions, not a major performance fix, so prioritize it after addressing resource use and storage.

10. Adjust visual effects if you value responsiveness over animation
Windows visual effects can use system resources. Search Start for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the performance options, and select Adjust for best performance to reduce effects. This can make Windows look less polished. If you prefer, leave that option off and disable only effects you do not care about.
11. Choose a power mode that fits the situation
Open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose a power mode. Balanced is a sensible choice for typical use. Best performance may suit demanding work, particularly when a laptop is plugged in, but can use more power, shorten battery runtime, and make the device warmer. Microsoft’s power mode instructions explain the setting.
12. Optimize drives with Windows
Search Start for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select a drive, and use Optimize if Windows recommends it. Use this built-in interface rather than repeatedly running a manual defragmentation routine, especially for an SSD; Windows chooses the appropriate optimization for the drive. Microsoft includes drive optimization in its performance guidance.

13. Recheck Task Manager and act on the bottleneck
After the changes, look again at CPU, Memory, and Disk use in Task Manager while doing the activity that felt slow. If one recognized app is consuming an unusually large share of resources, close it normally or adjust its settings. Avoid ending unknown processes. If the same resource remains heavily used, that observation can help narrow down the next step rather than prompting random changes.

A PC with slow storage may remain sluggish even after unnecessary activity is reduced. Microsoft notes that devices using a hard disk drive (HDD) are typically slower to use than devices with SSD or eMMC storage. If Task Manager consistently shows disk activity as the bottleneck, a compatible SSD could be a future upgrade, but compatibility depends on the PC’s model, interface, and form factor. Check the manufacturer’s specifications before buying or installing anything. Microsoft also cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from software steps.
Keep performance tuning separate from security support
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Performance tuning does not restore security support. Whether a PC can move to Windows 11 depends on its hardware, so check compatibility before treating an upgrade as an option. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou do not need a third-party PC optimizer to perform these steps. Use Windows’ built-in tools and trusted download sources; Microsoft warns that potentially unwanted apps can show unwanted ads, perform cryptomining, or offer other unexpected apps. If you later consider resetting or reinstalling Windows, back up important files first: some recovery options can cause data loss. Microsoft recommends starting with the least disruptive recovery option in its Windows recovery guide.
