Use a 15-minute test to decide whether an AI tool merits further evaluation for one specific, low-risk task—not to certify that it is safe or reliable in general. Set a clear success criterion, try a representative example and an edge case, check data terms, then choose to reject it, investigate further, or pilot it cautiously.

What a 15-minute AI tool test can—and cannot—tell you

This is a practical screening method, not an official standard, benchmark, or validated protocol. No cited guidance establishes 15 minutes as a sufficient evaluation period. A brief test can reveal whether a tool appears useful for a defined task and what questions need answering next; it cannot establish broad accuracy, safety, fairness, privacy protection, or suitability for organizational deployment.

Evaluation depends on the intended use and context. Australia’s National AI Centre advises testing before deployment, while NIST describes a broader approach involving model testing, red teaming, and user testing. The depth of review should rise with the potential consequences of an error. See the National AI Centre’s implementation guidance and NIST’s ARIA pilot evaluation report.

Run the five-step test

1. Define one task and a pass condition (2 minutes)

Write down the task, what a useful result must include, and one observable criterion for success. For example: “Turn these non-sensitive notes into a summary that preserves all three decisions and names the next owner.” A criterion tied to your intended use is more meaningful than a general impression that the answer sounds good. The National AI Centre’s implementation guidance recommends acceptance criteria and test methods that reflect intended use, context, and risk.

2. Try a representative prompt (4 minutes)

Use an ordinary example resembling the work you actually want the tool to do. Keep a trusted source or known answer nearby if possible, and check consequential claims against it. Fluency is not evidence of correctness: the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) warns about over-reliance on AI and overestimating its accuracy without appropriate review. Its guidance on commercially available AI covers these risks.

3. Probe an edge case (3 minutes)

Try one incomplete, ambiguous, or slightly out-of-scope input. Notice whether the tool asks for clarification, signals uncertainty, or confidently fills in missing information. This probe is a practical suggestion informed by risk-based evaluation guidance, not a benchmark or a score that proves how the tool will behave generally. NIST’s ARIA Evaluation Planning Manual and ARIA pilot report describe more extensive evaluation approaches.

4. Check data handling and controls (3 minutes)

Before entering sensitive material, read the current provider policy and check the controls available for your account. Look for how long prompts and uploads are retained, whether they may be used for model training, who can access them, how deletion works, and what privacy and security protections apply. The OAIC guidance discusses privacy risks in commercially available AI; Elsevier’s research-tool checklist specifically asks about training use and data protection. Provider terms and features can change, so check the current policy and follow your organization’s rules.

5. Check workflow friction and decide (3 minutes)

Ask whether the tool fits the real workflow, exposes sources or uncertainty when those matter, and allows an appropriate person to review and correct the output. Elsevier’s checklist is aimed at research-tool evaluation, but its questions about human review and workflow integration can help frame this check. OECD guidance also emphasizes intended output use and human oversight in its due diligence framework.

Choose an outcome and record what you learned

  • Reject for this task: The tool misses the pass condition, mishandles the edge case, or has data terms incompatible with the task.
  • Explore further: The result looks promising, but one short test is too little evidence to rely on. Try more representative cases and check the provider’s documentation.
  • Pilot cautiously: Consider only a low-risk use with a named human reviewer and a way to monitor problems. A successful prompt alone is not a basis for formal deployment.

Keep a compact record of the tool and version or account context, test date, prompt, result, what you verified, and what remains unknown. This makes follow-up comparisons more useful. NIST guidance supports documenting evaluation methods and results, though it does not prescribe this particular record sheet. The ARIA Evaluation Planning Manual describes a broader evaluation approach.

Compare tools using the same task

If you are deciding between tools, give each the same task and apply the same criteria. These comparison axes synthesize NIST trustworthiness considerations, privacy guidance, and evaluation checklists; they are not a universal weighted score.

When a brief test is not enough

For high-impact, regulated, or safety-sensitive use, treat this screen as an initial check—not clearance to deploy. OECD guidance recommends reviewing testing information, data suitability, intended output use, and oversight, and consulting users or experts as relevant. NIST’s ARIA approach combines model testing, red teaming, and user testing; Australia’s National AI Centre also recommends risk-aligned monitoring and human oversight. See the OECD framework, NIST’s ARIA manual, and the National AI Centre’s foundations guidance.

NIST’s 2025 ARIA pilot report describes three evaluation scenarios and three testing levels: model testing, red teaming, and field testing. It also reports that five organizations submitted seven AI applications for the pilot. Those details illustrate the scope of a broader evaluation effort; they do not validate this 15-minute screen. NIST’s pilot report provides the context.
