Use parser gates and runtime database controls together when an AI agent writes SQL. A parser can reject invalid syntax and enforce structural rules before execution; parameter binding keeps values separate from SQL code; and restricted database credentials and policies limit what a query can actually do. None of these controls alone proves that a query is authorized, harmless, or appropriate to the user’s request.

What each control can—and cannot—enforce

Control Strongest contribution Important limit
Parser and AST policy gate Checks syntax and applies structural allow/deny rules before execution, such as permitted statement types, tables, schemas, functions, or statement count. Does not grant or deny database privileges, enforce row access by itself, or establish that a query matches the user’s intent.
Parameterized query Keeps supplied values separate from SQL code. Does not validate arbitrary SQL structure or determine access scope.
Database role and policy Enforces what the execution identity can access or modify. Cannot determine whether an otherwise permitted query is useful or intended.
Isolation and operational controls Can limit exposure and operational impact. Must be configured for the particular database and workload.

These controls operate at different layers. PostgreSQL describes parsing as syntax validation followed by construction of a parse tree (PostgreSQL parser stage). A query can still be syntactically valid and unsafe: Microsoft warns that SQL Server executes syntactically valid queries it receives and advises, “Never build Transact-SQL statements directly from user input” (Microsoft SQL injection guidance).

When a parser gate is useful

A parser gate gives an application a chance to inspect generated SQL before sending it for execution. After parsing, policy code can allow or reject the resulting structure—for example, permitting reads from approved tables while rejecting writes, disallowed functions, or multiple statements when the application has no reason to accept them.

PostgreSQL’s libpg_query project uses PostgreSQL server source to parse queries outside the server and return the internal parse tree. That kind of parser can make structural checks explicit and testable. It is not a general SQL validator: choose a parser for the target database dialect, align it with the deployed database version, and test the syntax your application actually uses. A PostgreSQL parser does not establish compatibility with another engine.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The AST checks are application policy, not database authorization. They require maintenance as schemas and allowed query patterns change, and a valid tree cannot tell whether a permitted query is suitable for the user’s request. Functions may also have effects that a simplistic statement-type check misses, so policy must account for the capabilities exposed by the target database.

What runtime guards add

Runtime controls apply where a statement executes. A dedicated database identity with narrowly scoped privileges can restrict accessible objects and operations; views and other database policies can further narrow exposure. OWASP recommends least privilege and describes database-side protections in its Database Security Cheat Sheet and SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet.

These controls provide an independent backstop when an application check misses a generated operation, provided the database identity and policies are genuinely restrictive. They do not replace parameterization or application policy. The database can enforce what a role is allowed to do; it generally cannot infer whether an allowed read answers the user’s question.

Build the layers in this order

  1. Constrain the interface. Prefer structured query generation or narrowly scoped tools when they can meet the task. Do not make arbitrary SQL the default simply because the agent can produce it.
  2. Bind values instead of concatenating them. Keep user-supplied and agent-supplied values out of SQL code through prepared or parameterized statements. OWASP identifies prepared statements with variable binding as the primary SQL injection defense: the database distinguishes code from data regardless of the supplied input (OWASP SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet). PostgreSQL documents parameterized preparation in its PREPARE documentation. Parameter binding protects values; it is not a substitute for checking the structure of arbitrary SQL.
  3. Parse for the actual target. Use a parser that matches the database dialect and version. Inspect its syntax tree against explicit rules for allowed statement types, objects, functions, and statement count as relevant. Treat those rules as code: test them against ordinary and adversarial inputs and update them when the schema or workflow changes.
  4. Execute with a dedicated, least-privileged identity. Grant only the access the agent workflow needs. Restrict database and network exposure, and use views or other database controls where they help limit data access.
  5. Set operational safeguards for the workload. Consider query limits, timeouts, transaction boundaries, auditing, and cancellation. There is no universal setting established for these controls; choose and verify them for the deployed database and workload.
  6. Log for review without creating a new data leak. Preserve enough context to investigate decisions and failures, while protecting sensitive query values and returned data.

How to choose and test the design

The choice is not parser gate or runtime guard. Use both, then test how they interact. For each policy, establish which layer enforces it, what happens on rejection or failure, and whether another path can bypass that layer. A parser rejection should fail closed if the application depends on the gate; database permissions should still prevent an unapproved operation if the gate is bypassed.

Test representative valid requests as well as malformed SQL, disallowed statement types, unapproved objects and functions, multiple statements, and attempts to access data beyond the agent’s role. Verify behavior with the actual driver, database version, schema, credentials, and connection path—not just with parser unit tests. Review audit output and confirm that operational controls behave as intended under the application’s workload.

The reviewed official guidance establishes the role of these controls, but does not provide a controlled benchmark or universal security or performance winner for parser gates versus runtime guards in agent-generated SQL. Treat latency and maintenance burden as properties to measure in your own deployment, not as settled comparative figures.
