A move to a subdomain does not automatically mean you need to change RewriteBase. The setting matters when a relative rewrite substitution needs a URL-path prefix that Apache cannot infer from the filesystem mapping. First check the rule’s directory context, the URL-to-filesystem mapping, and whether the rule pattern has a leading slash; any of those can explain a failure that appears after a migration.
What changes when Apache reads a rule in .htaccess?
In an .htaccess file, Apache evaluates RewriteRule patterns in per-directory context. It removes the applicable directory prefix from the URL path before matching the pattern, so the rule receives a path without a leading slash. For example, a request for /app/products/widget may be presented to a rule in that directory as products/widget.
That differs from rules in server or virtual-host configuration, where the pattern is matched against a different form of the URL path. A pattern beginning with ^/ will not match in per-directory context. Apache’s documentation gives the example RewriteRule "^/foo" ... and notes that it “will silently fail to match anything” in an .htaccess file.

No. A hostname change alone does not establish that the URL-path prefix used by a relative substitution has changed. RewriteBase supplies that URL-path prefix for relative substitutions in per-directory rules; it is not a filesystem directory and should not be populated with a disk path.

Whether Apache can determine the right base without an explicit directive depends on how the URL maps to the filesystem and on the Apache version. In ordinary cases under DocumentRoot, the base can usually be omitted. The Apache 2.4 documentation also describes cases where it can be omitted for certain Alias or mod_userdir mappings, starting with Apache 2.4.16. Check the installed version before relying on that exception.
A subdomain migration can reveal a base mismatch if the new virtual host maps the hostname’s URL paths to a different physical directory, or if an alias or another mapping separates URL paths from filesystem paths. But without the virtual-host configuration, the applicable .htaccess location, and the rule itself, there is no single RewriteBase value that can be prescribed.

Trace the request before changing the base
- Identify the virtual host. Establish which virtual host handled the request, then determine its
DocumentRootand any relevant aliases or other URL-to-filesystem mappings. - Find the applicable directory context. Locate the
.htaccessfile that applies to the requested resource. The directory containing it determines which prefix Apache strips before matching its rules. - Write down the three paths. Record the request URL path, the filesystem directory to which it maps, and the rule’s substitution. This makes it easier to see whether the substitution is relative or begins with a slash.
- Check the pattern form. If a per-directory pattern begins with
^/, remove that leading slash and match against the path after Apache strips the directory prefix. - Resolve a relative substitution. Work out which URL-path prefix the relative target needs. Add
RewriteBaseonly if the mapping requires it; use a URL path, not the physical directory path. - Test in the migrated host’s actual context. Apply the change to the virtual host and mapping that serve the subdomain, then test the affected request. A result from a different host or directory context may not exercise the same rules.
Check prerequisites and rule inheritance
A correct pattern and base cannot help if rewriting is unavailable or the file’s directives are not permitted. Check these prerequisites in the relevant server and directory configuration:

RewriteEngine Onis enabled for the applicable context.- The server permits the rewrite directives used in the
.htaccessfile through its override configuration. FollowSymLinksorSymLinksIfOwnerMatchis enabled in the relevant context, as required for per-directory rewriting.
If rules span multiple directories, check inheritance as well. Parent rewrite rules are not inherited by default. RewriteOptions controls inheritance behavior, and MergeBase is available starting with Apache 2.4.26. Confirm the installed version and the intended directory-level behavior before changing inheritance settings.

Use the symptom to narrow the cause
- The rule never matches: Inspect the pattern for a leading slash and account for the directory prefix stripped in per-directory context.
- The rule matches but sends the request to the wrong URL path: Check whether the substitution is relative and whether its URL-path base is correct for the mapping.
- Rules work in one directory but not another: Check which
.htaccessfile applies and whether parent rules are inherited as intended. - No rule appears to take effect: Verify that rewriting is enabled, the directives are allowed, and the required symlink option is in effect before treating
RewriteBaseas the cause.
These checks describe documented Apache behavior, not a confirmed failure in a particular migration. The hostname, configuration, and request path are needed to identify which condition applies to an individual site.
