For a new project or a project using current Yarn, install and enable Corepack, then let the project select its Yarn version. Use the separate Debian repository method only when an existing project specifically requires Yarn Classic (1.x). These routes install different Yarn generations, so first check the project’s instructions or package-manager declaration.
Choose the Yarn version your project expects
Yarn’s current installation guide recommends the Corepack workflow for current releases. Corepack can select a package-manager version for each project, which helps avoid changing an existing repository’s tooling accidentally. See the Yarn installation guide and its Corepack documentation.
Yarn Classic is the 1.x line. Its installation page documents a Debian/Ubuntu repository method for projects that depend on that generation. The two methods are not interchangeable: confirm the required version in the project’s instructions or configuration before installing or switching.

Install Corepack globally with npm, then enable its shims:
npm install -g corepack corepack enable -
Check the Yarn command and compare the reported version with the project’s expected version:

For a new project, initialize it with the documented command:

For an existing project, run its usual install command only after confirming the configured Yarn version. Avoid upgrading the package manager simply to follow a generic setup guide.

Install Yarn Classic (1.x) from its Debian repository
Use this route only when the project calls for Yarn Classic. Follow the repository and signing-key setup on the Yarn Classic Debian installation page; it documents a keyring at /etc/apt/keyrings/yarn-archive-keyring.gpg and a stable main repository entry. After adding the repository, update apt’s package list and install Yarn:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install yarnThe Classic page also describes release-candidate and nightly channels, but the stable channel is the appropriate choice for a typical stable installation.

Check the installation and resolve common problems
corepack: command not found: Some third-party Node.js distributions do not include Corepack. Check how Node.js was installed; if Corepack is missing, Yarn’s guidance says to install it withnpm install -g corepack, then runcorepack enable.- The reported Yarn version does not match the project: Run
yarn --versionfrom the project context and compare it with the project’s declared or documented version. Corepack is intended to select package-manager versions per project. - The Classic
yarncommand behaves unexpectedly: Check whethercmdtestis installed. The Classic documentation calls out a conflict on Ubuntu 17.04, wherecmdtestmay be installed by default, and suggests removing it if that specific conflict occurs. This is a release-specific warning, not a general instruction for every Ubuntu version.
Why not install current Yarn with npm?
Yarn’s FAQ says modern Yarn releases have not been distributed through the npm yarn package since 2019; that package remains on the 1.x line. Therefore, npm install -g yarn is not the general installation command for current Yarn.
