If Windows 11 keeps changing your date order or 12/24-hour display, first identify whether the Regional format actually changed. A wrong clock, a changing time zone, and a format change are separate problems with different controls. Microsoft documents where to configure each, but its support guidance does not establish one universal cause or verified fix for a Regional format that repeatedly reverts.
First identify what is changing
Compare the symptom across Windows and, if relevant, more than one app. Note whether the date pattern or clock display changes, the actual time becomes incorrect, the time zone changes, or only one application displays dates differently. Also record when it happens—such as after an app restart, Windows restart, or sign-in. These are useful observations, not categories Microsoft identifies as proven causes.
- Date or time display pattern: Check the Windows Regional format setting.
- Clock value or time zone: Check Date & time settings.
- One app only: Check that app’s own display preferences.
Check the Windows Regional format
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Look at the selected Regional format and set the format you want if it is wrong.
- If the issue began after changing languages, review the installed languages, Windows display language, and preferred-language order on the same page. A display-language change moves that language to the top of Preferred languages, but Microsoft does not say this explains a recurring Regional format reset.

Check the clock and time zone separately
For an incorrect clock or changing time zone, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Review automatic or manual date/time settings, automatic or manual time-zone selection, and daylight-saving behavior. These settings govern clock and time-zone configuration; changing them is not an established fix for a Regional format that reverts. Microsoft’s Windows date, time, and time-zone instructions cover these controls.

Check location only if the time zone is the problem
Windows location settings can enable features such as automatic time-zone setting. If automatic time-zone adjustment is failing, review location settings using Microsoft’s Windows location service and privacy guidance. A disabled location service or related warning is relevant to automatic time-zone behavior, not proof that location resets the date display format. Microsoft’s September 26, 2023 Windows configuration update provides historical context about a time-zone warning when location is disabled; it does not establish a general format-reset cause.
If the format differs in only one app
Check the application’s own settings before changing Windows-wide preferences. Microsoft Teams is one example: it can follow Windows regional settings or use separate in-app date and time formats. Microsoft says Teams may need to restart after a regional-format change. See Microsoft’s Teams settings guidance. This behavior is Teams-specific and should not be assumed for other apps.

If the Windows format keeps reverting
If the Regional format itself changes back after you set it, note the selected format and exactly when it reverts. Record whether the change follows a restart or sign-in, whether language or region settings were recently changed, and whether the device is managed by an organization. Those details can help support staff investigate a device-specific issue or managed-device policy; the official guidance cited here does not verify either as a general cause, and it does not provide a universal registry fix.
Do not change the Store region just to change date display
Microsoft recommends changing the Microsoft Store country or region when moving to another country or region for a long time, and warns that doing so can affect regional content and Microsoft account balances. It is not a quick date-format repair. See Microsoft’s Store country or region guidance.
