To keep a coding model’s changes inside an agreed repository boundary, declare three path sets before the first prompt: what it may read, what it may change, and what it may read but must not change. Then compare the final changed paths with the declared write set. Taylor Lin proposes this workflow in a September 16, 2026 DEV Community article; it is a practical proposal, not a measured benchmark or validated standard. [DEV Community]
What the three sets mean
The sets describe repository paths, not capabilities enforced by the model. Their purpose is to make the session’s boundary explicit and give a reviewer a concrete check against the resulting diff.
- Read set: paths the model may be shown, such as source code, fixtures, and error logs. Secrets should never be included.
- Write set: paths the model may modify. Lin recommends keeping it small enough that a reviewer can explain every file in one sitting.
- Freeze set: paths the model may read but must not modify. Examples include scoring tests, golden fixtures, lockfiles, migration history, and policy-as-code.
A write-set leak is any generated change outside the declared write set. In this workflow, a leak fails the session even if tests pass. A self-scoring patch is a particularly serious freeze-set leak: for example, weakening a cart assertion so an incorrect implementation appears to pass.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the four checks in order
The proposed decision tree assigns the session to the first failed preflight check. Stop at that leaf, fix the boundary, and do not prompt the model until the checks pass.
- Are all three sets declared somewhere the model cannot edit? If not, stop at Leaf A and create the contract first.
- Are scoring tests in the freeze set, disjoint from the write set? If not, stop at Leaf B and move the tests out of the writable area.
- Is the write set reviewable? Lin uses an eight-file working cap recorded before the prompt. If the proposed set exceeds the cap, stop at Leaf C and split the ticket. The cap is an article-specific default, not a universal standard, and it can rule out legitimate refactors.
- After generation, are all changed paths inside the write set? If yes, Leaf D is reached: the path check is clean. If not, the session has a write-set leak.
Set the cap in the contract before generation; do not raise it after seeing the diff. The point is to decide the boundary independently of what the model happens to change.
Put the boundary in a file the model cannot edit
Lin’s proposed artifact is a JSON file such as review/session_sets.json. It records the three path lists and the working cap. A simplified contract for the cart example might look like this:

"read": ["src/cart.py", "tests/test_cart.py"],
"write": ["src/cart.py"],
"freeze": ["tests/test_cart.py", "review/session_sets.json"],
"max_write_files": 8
}
This is an illustrative contract, not a universal schema. Keep the contract outside the model’s writable paths; including it in the freeze set makes that boundary visible to the proposed checker. The read set can include the test file so the model can inspect it, while the freeze set says it may not alter that file.
Leaf A: the sets are missing
Suppose the ticket is to apply a ten-percent regional cart discount without allowing the total to go below zero, but no path boundary has been agreed. Do not prompt yet. Create the sets file, identify the allowed implementation path, list the relevant tests as readable and frozen, and put the contract itself in freeze. Only resume once the sets are declared somewhere the model cannot edit.
Leaf B: a scoring test can be changed
If tests/test_cart.py is in the write set, the model could change the implementation and loosen the check used to judge it. Move the test into freeze and leave the implementation file, such as src/cart.py, in the write set.

The illustrative cart checks cover a 200-to-180 result after a ten-percent discount and a nonnegative result. Run the test once before generation so you know the test instrument’s state before asking for the code change:
pytest -q tests/test_cart.py
The command is part of the proposed example. A passing test after generation is useful only if the model was not allowed to rewrite the scoring test to obtain that result.
Leaf C: the write set is too large
If the proposed write set exceeds the chosen review cap, split the ticket rather than increasing the cap in response to the diff. For example, handle the cart-only change in one session, with src/cart.py writable and its test frozen. If a separate pricing-file change is needed, make it a second session with a new sets file and its own declared boundary. This makes each session’s changes easier to assess, though it may require more than one generation.

Leaf D: generate once, then check changed paths
Once the preflight checks pass, make one generation and compare Git’s changed-path list with the write set. Lin’s sample Python checker does not call a model; it checks the lists, rejects overlap between write and freeze, looks for a scoring test in freeze, applies the cap, and compares changed names with the write set. The sample obtains changed paths using:
git diff --name-only HEAD
For the cart example, the proposed workflow also shows these inspection commands:
Recommended Free Tools
git diff --stat -- src/cart.py
pytest -q tests/test_cart.py
These are commands from the described workflow, not independent test results. A clean path check means the listed changed files are within scope; it does not establish that the discount formula is correct. Review the implementation and run the frozen tests.

Know what the path check misses
git diff --name-only HEAD does not show untracked files. A newly created path can therefore evade a check that examines only that output. For new files intended for commit, stage them with intent-to-add before checking:
git add -N path/to/new-file
Then inspect the changed-path list and compare it with the contract. The checker also evaluates paths, not program meaning: an allowed file can still contain a wrong formula, so a clean diff is not a correctness guarantee.
What this workflow does—and does not—establish
The method’s useful distinction is between visibility, permission to change, and protected material. Declaring those boundaries before prompting gives the reviewer a specific scope to check afterward. But the described checker is a proposed guardrail, not proof that a model was technically prevented from reading or editing paths, and the source does not report an independently measured success rate. Treat it as a review workflow, not a security boundary or a substitute for tests and code review.
