A website builder is software that lets you create, edit, and publish website pages through a visual interface. You choose a template, blank canvas, or generated design, customize it, add the features your site needs, then publish it. Many builders also bundle hosting and site-management services, so you may not need to arrange those separately.
How does a website builder work?
A builder combines an editor with tools for preparing and publishing a site. The exact features, plan limits, and division of responsibilities vary by provider, but the process usually follows these steps.
- Choose a starting point. Begin with a template, a blank canvas, or—where offered—an AI-generated design. For example, Wix documents templates and a blank canvas, while Squarespace describes both templates and AI-assisted generation.
- Edit pages visually. Use the editor to arrange page elements and change text, images, layouts, and features. Wix documents drag-and-drop editing and apps. Basic visual editing does not require coding, although some services offer custom-code options for advanced changes.
- Add pages and functions. Create the pages your site needs and add tools such as a blog, contact forms, appointment booking, or commerce. A store needs further setup, including products, prices and variants, policies, payment methods, and shipping.
- Set up publication. Choose a plan and connect a domain if you want a custom web address. On hosted platforms, hosting and some security services may be included. Plan requirements differ: Wix, for example, says connecting a custom domain or removing its ads requires a Premium plan, and accepting payments for a store requires an upgrade. Check the provider’s current terms rather than assuming another builder has the same limits.
- Publish and maintain the site. The platform makes the published site available to visitors. You remain responsible for keeping its content current and managing any business functions you use. Hosting, security, backups, and the ability to move a site elsewhere depend on the platform and plan; check their terms before committing.
Do you need coding skills to build a website?
Not for the basic visual workflow. A builder’s editor lets you assemble and edit pages without writing code. Custom code may be available for specialized changes on some platforms, but whether you can use it—and how much control it provides—is provider-specific.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you build a website for free?
Some builders let you start building without paying, but that does not guarantee free access to every publishing or business feature. A custom domain, removal of platform branding, or payment acceptance may require a paid plan. Wix documents these restrictions for its own service; the terms are not universal. Before publishing, check the current plan details, billing period, taxes, domain renewal costs, add-ons, and payment-processing fees.

What is the difference between a website builder and web hosting?
A website builder provides the visual tools for making and editing pages. Web hosting is the service that stores and serves a site so visitors can access it. Many hosted builders bundle the editor and hosting, along with some site-management features. In that case, you generally do not need to buy separate hosting for that site. A self-hosted content management system (CMS), by contrast, can give you more technical control but requires you to make more decisions and handle more of the setup and ongoing operations yourself. The precise trade-offs depend on the platform and its terms; Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison discusses the distinction between hosted builders and self-hosted WordPress.

- Editing ease and design control: Consider whether the editor and available designs suit your skills and the degree of customization you need.
- Hosting, domains, and security: Find out what the plan includes, what costs extra, and which maintenance tasks remain yours.
- Features and extensions: Check whether the platform supports the pages and functions you need, and whether you can add tools if your needs change.
- Total cost: Look beyond the starting price. Check recurring charges, billing terms, domain renewal, add-ons, and transaction or payment-processing fees on the provider’s current pages. Prices and plan terms can change.
- Support and maintenance: Understand how updates, backups, security, and help are handled under the plan you are considering.
- Commerce depth: If selling is central to the site, assess catalog and inventory tools, payment methods, shipping, policies, and sales channels—not just the page editor. Wix’s online-store guide, for example, lays out product, policy, payment, shipping, and promotion steps.
A hosted, all-in-one builder is a natural place to start if you want a managed workflow and do not need extensive technical customization. A self-hosted CMS may suit you better if control matters more and you are prepared to take on additional technical responsibility. For a business built around online sales, prioritize the depth of commerce features.
