A Solana durable nonce lets a transaction remain eligible for submission beyond the normal recent-blockhash window—but not indefinitely or unconditionally. It works only while the nonce account still holds the matching, unused value and the transaction meets the network’s other requirements. Advancing that nonce makes an older transaction signed with it unusable.
What is a Solana durable nonce?
Ordinary Solana transactions use a recent blockhash to establish a limited validity window. Solana’s transaction documentation describes that window as 150 slots. A durable nonce substitutes a value stored in a special nonce account for the ordinary recent blockhash, removing that ordinary expiry window while the stored value remains usable. Solana documents offline signing and delayed submission as reasons to use the mechanism. Solana’s transaction documentation and its durable nonce documentation describe the distinction.
A nonce account is owned by the System Program. When initialized, it stores an authority public key, a durable nonce value derived from a recent blockhash, and the lamports-per-signature fee rate recorded when the nonce was last advanced. The authority is the signer authorized to advance that nonce.
How do Solana durable nonce transactions work?
- Create and initialize a nonce account. The account must be initialized and valid for nonce use.
- Read its current stored nonce. Use that value as the transaction’s
recent_blockhash. - Put AdvanceNonceAccount first. The first instruction in the transaction must be the System Program’s AdvanceNonceAccount instruction. Its nonce account must be the first account in that instruction and writable; the runtime uses this instruction position to recognize a durable nonce transaction.
- Collect the required signatures. The nonce authority must sign. Any other transaction signers required by the transaction must also sign it.
- Submit while the value remains current. The transaction can be held for delayed submission, but another operation that advances the account first invalidates the old nonce value.
When processing the transaction, the validator checks that the nonce account is suitable and initialized, its stored value matches the transaction’s recent blockhash, the nonce has not already been consumed in the current block, and the authority has signed. A valid nonce is advanced before the remaining instructions execute. See Solana’s durable nonce guide and transaction pipeline documentation.

Durable nonce versus a recent blockhash

The 150-slot figure is Solana’s documented ordinary blockhash window, not a promise that a durable nonce transaction will be accepted at any arbitrary future time. The nonce must still be current, and runtime checks and the instructions themselves must succeed for the requested action to complete.

It matters whether the transaction fails nonce validation or fails later during instruction execution:

- Nonce validation fails: If the nonce was already used, the authority did not sign, or the account is missing or invalid, the transaction is dropped without fees or state changes.
- Nonce validation succeeds, then an instruction fails: The nonce remains advanced and transaction fees are collected. The signed transaction cannot be replayed with the old nonce, even though its requested action did not complete.

Durable nonces are useful when the normal blockhash window is too short for a signing or coordination workflow. Solana’s documentation names offline signing and delayed submission; its developer material also discusses scheduled transactions and multisignature coordination as possible applications. These are use cases, not guarantees that a transaction will land whenever it is eventually submitted. After a transaction is processed, fetch the nonce account again before constructing another transaction. Its stored value has changed, so a transaction signed with the previous value should not be treated as reusable.
Is Solana removing durable nonces?
Solana’s durable nonce documentation warns that durable nonces “may be deprecated in a future release.” Separately, a June 16, 2026 discussion in the Solana Improvement Documents repository proposed soft deprecation for nonce transactions. A warning and proposal discussion do not establish that removal has been adopted or activated on mainnet. The available sources establish no removal date. Check current network and client guidance before basing a new implementation on the feature. Solana’s documentation and the SIMD discussion repository provide the status context.

Solana’s CLI reference, which follows Agave v4.2.1, includes commands for creating, inspecting, advancing, authorizing, and withdrawing nonce accounts. Command syntax can vary between releases, so check the version and help output for the CLI installed in your environment before running a command.
