Two Sisters Tinctures is a personal skincare inventory and routine-ordering app built around a deliberate division of labor: Gemma 4 drafts a product card from a name or ingredient list, fixed application rules determine routine order and conflict notes, and a person checks the card before saving it. Project author Earl Grey described the build in a DEV Community post published October 3, 2026. The app is a shelf and an ordering aid—not a medical tool or an allergy checker.
What Two Sisters Tinctures is designed to do
The project grew from a practical question: how could the author record her sister’s knowledge about skincare products so it would be easier to answer “what should I get?” Two Sisters Tinctures lets a user enter a product name or paste its ingredient list, keep products on a virtual shelf, see when an item has been open for a long time, and view morning and evening routines with notes about products the app says should not be layered.
In the author’s description, the shelf is stored in the browser’s localStorage, with no account or database. The post describes both a demo mode and a live app, but its article alone does not establish how either behaves today. Photo input and editing saved product details were listed as unfinished.

Why the model does not make the routine decisions
The project uses Gemma 4 26B A4B (gemma-4-26b-a4b-it) through Google’s Gemini API to read product information and draft structured fields. The model’s output is checked for the expected shape and product type; the author says the validator also constrains listed ingredients to those supplied by the user. Before a card is saved, the user reviews it.

Routine decisions come from a plain rules file rather than model improvisation. According to the author, that file controls product-type rules, morning or evening placement, conflicts, and 86 ingredient notes and aliases. The author summarized the arrangement as: “The model reads. The rules decide.” That is the design she reports for this project, not an independently audited account of the app.
The distinction matters because extracting and organizing label text is different from deciding what a user should apply. Two Sisters Tinctures is intended to help organize products and surface order or conflict notes; it does not establish whether a product is suitable for a particular person.

What the author’s small evaluation found
The author reports trying five products. When the input included both a product name and ingredient text, the app classified all five correctly in that set. With ingredient text alone, it classified three of five correctly; the BYOMA serum and CeraVe cleanser were each returned as “Moisturizer” in those ingredient-only trials. These are the author’s results from a five-product set, not a general model benchmark or an independently verified test.

| Product name plus ingredient text | 5 of 5 classified correctly, in the author’s five-product set | In this small set, adding the name helped the app classify the products. |
| Ingredient text alone | 3 of 5 classified correctly, in the author’s five-product set | Ingredient lists alone did not reliably identify product type in these trials. |
The narrow takeaway is about this implementation and its test set: a label’s product name gave the model useful context. The figures do not show how the system performs across other brands, formulations, or ingredient-list formats.

A bug hunt shaped the ingredient rules
The author describes two issues discovered while testing. A loose substring match incorrectly pushed a BYOMA serum and a L’Oreal SPF 30 product into night-only use. A separate comma-splitting issue damaged an ingredient name. She says she changed matching to use whole ingredient names, added an acid rule of thumb based on an ingredient’s position in the list, and wrote tests for the affected cases.
Those fixes are part of the project’s reported history, not general skincare guidance. Ingredient-list position and text matching are implementation choices; they do not, by themselves, determine whether a routine is safe or appropriate for an individual.

What the app’s privacy description does—and does not—establish
The author says saved shelf data stays in browser storage, while a product name or pasted ingredient text is sent to the Gemini API for interpretation. She says the model key is kept server-side, the service logs reason codes and timings rather than submitted text, and requests are subject to limits. Because photo input was not implemented, she says photos are not sent.

LocalStorage describes where the saved shelf resides; it does not mean that no information leaves the device when a user requests a model-generated card. The author also reported checking Google’s paid-service terms in early October 2026 and understanding that paid prompts and responses were not used to improve Google products. That is a time-sensitive policy statement attributed to the author, not independently verified here.

The post gives request limits of 50 reads a day for the app, 10 per day per visitor, and a per-minute cap. These are implementation details reported at publication and may change.
Build status and practical limits
The author reports 48 tests, including route tests, and says lint, tests, and npm audit ran in GitHub Actions. Those are self-reported project details, not an external audit. She describes Ollama as a local-model path stub that had not been tested, so the article does not establish a working local inference option.
- Not medical advice: the author says the app does not check allergies and is not a medical tool.
- No photo entry in the described build: photo input was presented as a future feature.
- No editing saved details: the author listed this as unfinished.
- Model output needs review: the user confirms a proposed product card before it is saved.
One family member’s positive feedback—that she liked the project and noted people often have questions about product order—is useful as personal feedback, not broad user validation.
