You can use a personal OneDrive account alongside work or school accounts, but their storage remains separate. On a Windows PC or Mac, add accounts in the OneDrive desktop app’s Account settings; on a phone, add and switch accounts from the profile menu. Microsoft’s desktop client supports one personal account and up to nine work or school accounts per device.
What multiple OneDrive accounts can—and cannot—do
OneDrive lets you work with a personal account and work or school accounts in the same desktop app. Each account appears in its own synced location rather than as one combined drive: Microsoft’s examples use “OneDrive – Personal” and “OneDrive – [CompanyName]” in File Explorer or Finder. Microsoft explains how OneDrive sync works on a computer.
Adding accounts does not merge their storage or link their file spaces. Microsoft says personal and work or school storage stay separate, and work or school folders cannot be synced or shared into personal OneDrive folders through this setup. To transfer files between accounts, copy or drag them from one account location to the other. Microsoft’s account-combining guidance describes the limitation.

Windows
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Select Help and Settings, then Settings.
- Open the Account tab and select Add an account.
- Sign in with the work or school account you want to add.
Mac
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar.
- Open the three-dot menu and choose Preferences.
- Open the Account tab and select Add an account.
- Sign in with the additional work or school account.
Microsoft’s desktop instructions allow one personal account; you cannot add a second personal account to sync alongside it in the OneDrive client. See Microsoft’s account setup steps.

Add and switch accounts on a phone
In the OneDrive app on Android or iOS, tap your profile picture or person icon and choose Add account, then sign in. To change which account you are viewing, open the same profile menu and tap the account you want to use. The app supports one personal account plus work or school accounts, but only one account can use camera backup at a time.
There are additional organization-specific rules on mobile: Microsoft’s instructions say you cannot sign in to multiple work or school accounts from the same organization. An organization may also require an Android work account to be installed in its Work Profile. Microsoft’s mobile account instructions cover these conditions.

Account limits by device and platform

The per-device desktop limits and macOS organization restriction come from Microsoft’s OneDrive restrictions guidance. These limits concern accounts signed in and syncing in the client, not combining accounts into a single storage pool.

Control which files use local disk space
When multiple accounts sync, choose which folders each account downloads to the computer. In OneDrive settings, use Choose folders to limit synced folders. Files On-Demand can also display cloud files in File Explorer or Finder without downloading every file. This reduces local storage use, but an online-only file needs an internet connection to open. Before relying on files away from a connection, make sure they are available locally. Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guide explains the setting.

Which setup fits your situation?
One personal account plus work or school accounts
Add the accounts to the same desktop client and use their separate folder locations to keep work distinct from personal files. This is the most direct arrangement when you need to access both kinds of files on one computer. Use selective sync and Files On-Demand if downloading everything would consume too much disk space.
Two or more personal accounts
Do not expect the OneDrive desktop app to sync multiple personal accounts concurrently: its documented allowance is one. Microsoft says personal accounts cannot be merged or linked. You can access another account separately through the web or move files between account spaces, but Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish a supported way to sync multiple personal accounts in the desktop client.

Check Windows compatibility
Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11 for the OneDrive desktop app. Its system requirements page, last updated June 23, 2026, says desktop-app support for Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier ended August 15, 2026. Microsoft says the app might continue to function on those older versions, but it will not receive updates and compatibility or functionality is not guaranteed.
