The right TV audio upgrade depends on what you want to fix: hard-to-hear dialogue, weak bass, limited surround, height effects, or a complicated setup. Soundbars cover these needs in configurations ranging from a single compact bar to systems with separate subwoofers and rear speakers. The five paths below are buying categories, not a ranked or independently tested list of products.
Start with the problem you want to solve
Before comparing features, decide which shortcoming matters most. A compact bar keeps setup simple; dialogue features target speech clarity; a subwoofer adds a dedicated bass component; rear speakers add physical surround channels; and height-capable systems aim to make supported sound formats feel more three-dimensional. One system may combine several of these, but extra components also mean more placement and connection decisions.
- Hard-to-hear speech: compare dialogue-oriented features and center-channel hardware.
- Weak bass: look for a system that includes a subwoofer or can add one.
- A wider surround presentation: distinguish physical rear speakers from virtual surround processing.
- Height effects: check for up-firing drivers and a TV connection that can pass the desired audio format.
- Minimal setup: consider an all-in-one bar and confirm it has the inputs and TV-remote behavior you need.
Five upgrade paths to compare
1. Compact all-in-one soundbar
A single bar is the simplest path when you want fewer components beneath or around the TV. Samsung’s UK lineup comparison identifies compact all-in-one designs in its S-series, while TechRadar notes that some bars contain their speakers without a separate subwoofer. Check the specific bar’s footprint, connections, supported formats, and your TV’s ability to pass those formats; “all-in-one” does not guarantee every feature or connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Soundbar with dialogue enhancement
If speech is the main frustration, compare features specifically described for voices rather than assuming any soundbar will solve it. Yamaha says its Clear Voice feature makes human voices more audible. VIZIO describes a center speaker in its M-Series 5.1 system as dedicated to dialogue. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof that a feature will fix dialogue in every room or with every program.

- Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.
3. Soundbar bundle with a subwoofer
A subwoofer is a separate speaker component intended to handle bass and low-frequency effects. It can be useful if your priority is a fuller low end, but not every buyer needs one: all-in-one and expandable configurations are also available. Yamaha’s US SR-B40A page specifies an included wireless subwoofer. Wireless connection reduces the need for an audio cable between bar and subwoofer, but the subwoofer still needs a suitable place and power.
4. Surround system with rear speakers
For sound coming from more directions, compare systems with physical rear speakers against bars that simulate surround virtually. Samsung’s UK comparison distinguishes physical and virtual surround and indicates when rear speakers are included, optional, or dependent on the model. VIZIO lists wireless surround speakers in selected systems, and its M-Series 5.1 page describes a system with surround speakers and a wireless subwoofer. Physical speakers add components to place and power; verify exactly what the package includes.

5. Atmos or height-capable soundbar system
For height effects, check both the soundbar hardware and the TV connection. TechRadar’s Atmos guide says a soundbar needs HDMI ARC or eARC to receive Atmos from a TV and describes upward-firing drivers as the most effective soundbar approach for producing height effects. Confirm that the exact TV and bar support the format and connection you intend to use; optical is listed on some products, but it is not a substitute for the cited ARC/eARC requirement for Atmos from a TV. TCL Europe’s Q75H listing, for example, specifies Atmos, HDMI eARC, an HDMI input, optical, and a wireless subwoofer.
Check TV compatibility before buying
Look at the ports and audio settings on both devices, not just the soundbar feature list. Product examples in the cited sources list HDMI ARC/eARC and/or optical. ARC/eARC can carry TV audio to the bar, and eARC is relevant to the Atmos pass-through described above. HDMI-CEC can affect whether the TV remote controls soundbar volume: TCL’s Europe Q75H page says its cited TV-control convenience “Requires a TV with HDMI-CEC support.” Check the TV manual and the soundbar’s instructions for supported formats, port labels, and control behavior.

Compare included hardware, space, and complexity
Soundbar systems range from a single bar to multi-component bundles. Samsung’s UK comparison, updated 15 August 2026, shows Q-series configurations from 3.1.2 to 11.1.4 channels, S-series from 3.1.2 to 5.0, and B-series from 2.0 to 5.1; these are lineup ranges on that UK page, not a recommendation or a statement about every market. The same comparison distinguishes surround and height speakers and whether subwoofers and rear speakers are included, optional, or model-dependent. VIZIO’s lineup likewise lists selected combinations with eARC, wireless subwoofers, and wireless surround speakers.
Count the pieces you will actually install: the bar, any subwoofer, and any rear speakers. Check the bar’s dimensions against the TV stand or wall space, and make sure there is a practical place for each separate speaker and its power connection. The cited sources do not establish a universal room-size rule, so choose based on your layout and the setup you are willing to manage rather than a generic room-size claim.

Examples and source scope
The examples illustrate different configurations rather than winners. Yamaha’s US SR-B40A page lists Dolby Atmos, a wireless subwoofer, Clear Voice, Bluetooth, HDMI or optical, four sound modes, and eARC/CEC compatibility. VIZIO’s M-Series 5.1 page describes a center speaker for dialogue, wireless subwoofer and surround speakers, and HDMI/eARC TV connection. Samsung’s channel and speaker breakdown is for its UK lineup; TCL’s Q75H information is from its Europe page. Availability, features, and bundles can differ by region and model.
Samsung’s UK comparison page, updated 15 August 2026, says the company added 12 new soundbars to its lineup. That is a statement about that lineup, not a market-wide statistic. Current prices, stock across markets, and a best-value ranking are not established here; check the relevant local product pages and retailers before deciding.
