If you leave workspace A, visit B, then return to A before an earlier request finishes, the matching workspace name alone does not make that late answer belong to your return visit. In the request-owner experiment described by World Programming (WPS), ownership depends on both the owner’s lease and a generation marker. A→B→A creates a new period for A; a result marked for the earlier period is rejected when the owner knows the scope changed.
Why the same workspace can be a different visit
A workspace identifier answers where a request was made, but not necessarily whether it is still current. Imagine starting a file-information request in A, switching to B, and returning to A while the request is still pending. The first and second visits share a workspace name, but they are distinct periods of activity.
The WPS account describes an owner that checks both lease ownership and a generation marker. When a scope switch or explicit reset retires a generation, a late result carrying that old marker is refused. The article’s summary phrase, attributed to Orca #20914 submitter Jinwoo-H, is: “Returning to the same place does not reverse time.”
What the reported experiment found
WPS says the work was inspired by Orca issue #20914, submitted by Jinwoo-H. It describes Orca’s mobile client as requesting file information from the computer running an AI assistant and retaining results for later queries. WPS identifies candidate commit 89711d6f55670781d23fc1a2d4e2aecf4d725758, says it was merged on 2026-09-16 UTC, and reports executing the complete generation-scoped-request-owner.ts module.

The reported test used eight schedules or boundary cases against the original module and a mutation that removed only the generation comparison: 16 observations in total. That is the experiment size WPS reports, not an independently reproduced test or a population statistic.

These outcomes illustrate why lease ownership and generation are separate checks: a request may still have a valid relationship to an owner while no longer belonging to the current visit.

Storage, retrieval, and display are separate decisions
Accepting a result does not guarantee it will be returned later
WPS describes a case in which submitting an old result returns “committed” because the owner has not yet been told that the outside scope changed. On a later read with the new scope, the owner detects the change and clears the stored contents; that read does not return the old value. A storage verdict therefore describes that moment, not every later retrieval outcome.
A cache check does not protect every screen
If a caller directly displays a retained asynchronous result without reading it again through the owner, the display path needs its own ordering or validity check. WPS notes that Orca’s file-search code retains such a check. The reported experiment did not run the mobile UI, so it does not establish what every screen will show.

What an implementation should validate
The reported cases point to several distinct boundaries to review. A generation marker only helps when the owner receives a reliable signal that identity or scope changed.
- Define invalidation events: decide which changes make earlier work unsuitable, such as workspace selection, reauthentication, or moving execution to another computer. The WPS account raises these as possibilities rather than establishing one universal policy.
- Notify the request owner: provide a reliable signal for each relevant change. An owner cannot invalidate on a change it never learns about.
- Validate when accepting results: check that the request still belongs to the owner and the current generation before storing it.
- Validate again when reading: confirm the stored value still matches the current scope rather than assuming that earlier acceptance makes it permanently valid.
- Protect direct UI updates: do not render a retained asynchronous value without a valid ordering check, especially when the display path bypasses a fresh owner read.
If a request publishes multiple updates—for example, “loading” followed by “ready”—the WPS account identifies how the marker should constrain those updates as a further design question, not as an extension tested in the reported experiment.

Do not confuse this with Microsoft Edge Workspaces
Microsoft Edge Workspaces is a separate collaboration feature. Microsoft says it shares tabs, favorites, history, and each member’s active tab, while users retain their own logins, passwords, and cookies; only certain navigations are shared. Those browser-sharing rules do not determine which visit owns an asynchronous result in the request-owner scenario described above.
