DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) automatically gives a device network configuration, commonly including an IP address. A DHCP client requests settings from a DHCP server, which can allocate an address for a limited lease and send other configuration details.

What DHCP stands for and does

DHCP means Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It is a client-server protocol that provides hosts with configuration parameters and allocates network addresses. The IPv4 specification describes it as building on BOOTP, adding automatic allocation of reusable addresses and configuration options. RFC 2131

In practical terms, a device running DHCP client software can obtain network settings from a DHCP server rather than requiring an administrator to enter them individually. An address is a common part of that configuration, but DHCP can also provide other parameters through options.

How DHCP assigns an IPv4 address

A typical new IPv4 address assignment uses four messages. The client and server exchange them to find an available offer, select it, and confirm the allocation:

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. DHCPDISCOVER: The client broadcasts to find DHCP servers.
  2. DHCPOFFER: A server offers an address and configuration.
  3. DHCPREQUEST: The client requests the offer it selected.
  4. DHCPACK: The selected server confirms the address and configuration parameters.

This is the common initial allocation sequence, not a requirement that every DHCP interaction use all four messages. Renewal, confirmation of an existing address, and cases where a client already knows its address can follow different paths. RFC 2131

What a DHCP lease is

A lease is the period for which an address is allocated to a client. Lease duration is not a universal fixed value: the server can configure a finite lease or an infinite one. A client may request an extension as the lease proceeds, or release the address when it no longer needs it. RFC 2131

What DHCP options provide

DHCP options are tagged data items in DHCP messages. They carry configuration and control information in addition to the allocated address. RFC 2132 specifies their formats and definitions.

Can a DHCP server serve devices on another subnet?

Yes. DHCP can work across routers using a relay agent, so a DHCP server does not have to be located on every client subnet. The network administrator configures the server and relay arrangement. RFC 2131

Is DHCP the same for IPv4 and IPv6?

No. DHCPv4 and DHCPv6 have separate specifications: RFC 2131 covers DHCP for IPv4, while RFC 8415 specifies DHCP for IPv6. Do not assume their message procedures are interchangeable.

What DHCP does not do

DHCP supplies host configuration, but it does not cover every network service. RFC 2131 says DHCP does not address registering newly configured clients with DNS and is not intended for configuring routers. Those tasks should not be confused with DHCP’s allocation of addresses and delivery of host parameters.
