A personal Wi-Fi hotspot lets nearby devices use an internet connection shared by your phone or a separate mobile hotspot device. In the usual phone setup, the phone shares its cellular data connection; the hotspot does not create mobile service or improve coverage where the phone has no signal. This article uses “personal hotspot” to mean private connection sharing, not public Wi-Fi.
What “personal Wi-Fi hotspot” means
On an iPhone or cellular iPad, Personal Hotspot uses the device’s mobile-data connection to create a temporary Wi-Fi network that other devices can join. On Android, Google describes sharing a phone’s mobile data this way as “tethering or using a hotspot.” The connected device then uses the phone’s internet connection over Wi-Fi.
Tethering is the broader term for sharing a phone’s internet connection. Most Android phones can share mobile data over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB; some can also share a Wi-Fi connection. A Wi-Fi hotspot is one way to tether, not a separate source of internet service.

“Hotspot” can also mean a public Wi-Fi access point. That is different from a personal hotspot, which is a private connection shared from your own device.

Phone hotspot or separate hotspot device?
A phone hotspot uses a phone’s built-in sharing feature and mobile-data connection. A dedicated mobile hotspot is separate hardware designed to provide Wi-Fi using its own mobile connection. You do not need separate hardware just to share a phone’s connection.
The FCC uses a narrower definition for its E-Rate program: a portable, single-purpose device intended to provide Wi-Fi connectivity. That program-specific definition is not a universal consumer definition of a hotspot.

If you are considering a dedicated device, verify that it works with your carrier and its network bands in the places you plan to use it. Check the service plan, hotspot-data terms, supported Wi-Fi bands and security, client-device limit, and power needs. Those details vary by model, carrier, plan, and location.

On Android
- Turn on Hotspot from Quick Settings. The exact menu and label can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
- On the other device, open its Wi-Fi settings, select the phone’s hotspot network, and enter the hotspot password.
On iPhone or cellular iPad
- Open Settings > Personal Hotspot. On some versions, the setting is under Settings > Mobile Service > Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- On the other device, select the hotspot’s Wi-Fi name and enter its password. Apple requires an iPhone or iPad hotspot password to be at least eight characters.
Devices signed in to the same Apple Account, or included in Family Sharing, may be able to connect using Instant Hotspot.

Check your carrier and data plan
A phone hotspot uses mobile data. Carriers may limit tethering, require a plan that permits it, or charge extra. There is no single hotspot allowance, fee, speed, or availability rule that applies to every carrier and plan; check your own current terms.
When comparing plans, confirm whether tethering is allowed, whether hotspot use has a separate data allowance, what happens when that allowance is used, and whether the service works with your intended devices and in your area.

Security, compatibility, and connection problems
Hotspot security and available settings depend on the device. Apple documents WPA2/WPA3 Personal as the default for Personal Hotspot and Internet Sharing, with a system-suggested secure random password by default. On iPhone 12 or later, Maximize Compatibility limits the hotspot to 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal; it turns off 5 GHz and, where applicable, 6 GHz. This can help some older clients connect, but changes the band and security mode.
Android hotspot options depend on the device and its software. The Android Open Source Project documents possible Soft AP settings such as security type, operating band and channel, client limits, and automatic shutdown timeout; not every phone exposes every option.
