An infrared (IR) remote control sends coded commands to a compatible device as pulses of invisible light. The device’s IR receiver detects the pulse pattern and translates it into an action, such as changing a TV channel or adjusting volume. Because the signal is light rather than radio, it usually needs a clear path or a useful reflection to reach the receiver.

How an infrared remote sends a command

Pressing a button makes the remote’s infrared emitter send a sequence of light pulses. The timing and pattern encode the selected function, and the receiving device decodes that pattern. Consumer audio/video equipment can use many different formats and code sets, so the remote and device must be compatible. Extron’s overview of IR ports describes the use of different codes for device functions; a technical chapter on infrared remote control explains how pulse codes and receiver settings work together.

A typical television remote uses infrared energy around 940 nanometers, a wavelength beyond what people can see. NASA’s explanation of infrared waves identifies this as a typical TV-remote wavelength.

Why pointing and placement matter

Since IR is light, a direct path from the remote to the device’s receiver is usually needed. A hand or closed cabinet door can block the signal. Reflections from a wall or ceiling may provide another path, but they are not guaranteed to work in every room or position. If equipment is hidden, an infrared extender can relay commands to it. Extron’s IR ports guide describes reflected paths and extenders for equipment that is not directly visible.

How IR differs from RF and Bluetooth

IR, radio frequency (RF), and Bluetooth are different ways to send remote-control commands. An IR handset cannot control a device that accepts only RF or Bluetooth commands; it needs a compatible IR receiver. Check both the device’s control method and the remote’s supported codes before choosing a replacement. A remote described as universal may support many devices, but that label does not guarantee compatibility with every model or code set. One For All’s explanation of IR, RF, and Bluetooth notes the line-of-sight requirement for its IR remotes and distinguishes them from RF- and Bluetooth-based controls.

How to check whether a remote is emitting IR

  1. Open the camera app on a digital camera or a phone whose camera can detect infrared.
  2. Point the remote’s front at the camera lens and press a button.
  3. Look for a flash on the camera display. If you see one, the remote is emitting a signal the camera can detect.

This is only a clue, not a definitive test: many phone cameras filter infrared, so no visible flash does not prove that the remote is faulty. Sony’s instructions for checking an IR remote include this camera caveat.
