MindForge v12.0.0 is a governance and orchestration framework for Claude Code and other coding runtimes. It bundles a large library of agent instructions and workflows, but most of those resources are advisory: the project documents hooks—not commands, skills, or personas—as the mechanism that can block a tool call. Its documented hook enforcement applies to specific Claude Code installation channels, not every runtime MindForge lists.

What MindForge v12.0.0 includes

The MindForge project describes the software as a governance and orchestration layer. Its listed components include slash commands, skills, personas, isolated-context subagents, dynamic workflows, a tamper-evident audit chain, cross-model review, cost-aware routing, a local-first knowledge graph, and a live dashboard. The project says it distributes MindForge through an npm package, a Claude Code plugin marketplace entry, and an MCP server.

The project’s capability overview reports the following inventories. These are project-published counts, not independently audited measurements:

Resource Count reported by the project
Slash commands 221
Skills 354
Personas 216
Subagents 164
Dynamic workflows 35

The project says 152 of its subagents were adapted from VoltAgent’s awesome-claude-code-subagents under the MIT license. MindForge’s v12.0.0 release summary is dated September 24, 2026. The project describes it as its first release aimed at real external users, and says the major-version number reflects that shift rather than a breaking change. It also lists fixes for misleading installation banners, workflow crash handling, and gaps in test coverage. These release descriptions are the project’s own.

What MindForge can actually enforce

The key distinction is between model-context instructions and hooks. MindForge’s commands, skills, personas, and protocol documents are advisory: they provide guidance through the model’s context, and the model can decline to follow them. The project states that hooks are the mechanism that can block a tool call.

That means a large instruction library should not be mistaken for a hard security boundary. Whether a hook can act as a gate depends on the installation channel and the documented runtime setup.

Documented hook enforcement by channel

Runtime or installation channel Hook enforcement documented by MindForge
Claude Code plugin channel Yes, on Claude Code
MindForge npx setup with --local Yes, on Claude Code
Other listed runtimes Not claimed by the project

The project says its npx installer writes hook configuration during installation and records registration outcomes in .mindforge/hook-registration.json. It also documents operational prerequisites: restart the harness because hooks are snapshotted at session start, trust the project in the harness, and have CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR set with Node available on the hook PATH. According to the project, missing environment setup can leave a gate absent. These are documented requirements, not independently tested behavior.

Choose an installation route

The project documents local and global setup commands for Claude Code. Local setup targets the project; global setup is the alternative when configuring Claude Code globally. Check the project’s current instructions before running either command, since installer behavior and labels can change.

Local Claude Code setup

npx mindforge-cc@latest --claude --local

Global Claude Code setup

npx mindforge-cc@latest --claude --global

MindForge also documents a plugin marketplace installation route. The npm package and the setup command serve different purposes: installing the package globally places command-line binaries on PATH, while running the setup command scaffolds a runtime configuration. For interactive use, the bare command opens a wizard that can preselect a detected runtime. In non-interactive use, the project says the wizard is skipped and the default runtime is Claude.

Audit trail: what the documented feature means

The repository describes a SHA-256 hash-linked audit chain stored at .planning/AUDIT.jsonl, with node bin/verify-audit.js as the verification command. This is a documented audit feature; its presence alone does not establish that a particular installation has an audit log or that the verification command has succeeded. No installed log or verification result is available here.

How to evaluate the claims

The official MindForge repository is the source for the feature list, counts, installation instructions, and enforcement description above. Those details describe what the project publishes, rather than an independent test of the software. In particular, the stated counts are not audited measurements, and no installation, benchmark, security audit, or hook runtime test was performed. Treat hook enforcement as a documented capability with prerequisites, not as a guarantee that every MindForge setup blocks disallowed actions.

For a practical evaluation, distinguish the questions: which runtime you use, whether you install through the plugin channel or npx setup, whether you need project-local or global configuration, and whether you need advisory guidance or a hook that can block a call. Those distinctions determine what the project’s documentation actually supports.
