For online classes and structured training, start with BigBlueButton. For straightforward browser meetings and presentations, consider Jitsi Meet. Both are open-source projects, but neither should be assumed to match Adobe Connect feature for feature: choose by the work you need to do, then verify the deployment, integrations, and operating costs.

The evidence for detailed comparisons is strongest for BigBlueButton and Jitsi Meet. Treat Nextcloud Talk and Apache OpenMeetings as options to validate rather than presumed substitutes with established feature parity.
Why BigBlueButton is the leading classroom candidate
BigBlueButton describes itself as a web-conferencing system for online learning. Its documented teaching and collaboration tools include presentations, screen sharing, public and private chat, a multi-user whiteboard, shared notes, polls, breakout rooms, hand raising, webcam video, and recordings. It also lists a learning analytics dashboard and supports LTI 1.0, with use cases including tutoring, office hours, flipped classrooms, group collaboration, and full online classes. That classroom orientation makes it the clearest first option when instructors need more than a video call. Its documentation describes browser-based use and mobile-browser access; mobile screen sharing is a limitation. Before deployment, check the current documentation for release details, infrastructure requirements, integration behavior, recording and playback, accessibility, and the load you expect. The project overview retrieved for this comparison identifies version 2.5 as latest, but may lag later releases, so do not treat that version reference as current without checking the project.

License and trademark are separate
BigBlueButton says its components are made available under the GNU Lesser General Public License, subject to that license’s terms. The project separately identifies BigBlueButton and its logo as trademarks; the software license does not grant trademark rights. Review the project’s open-source and licensing information for the terms relevant to your use.
When Jitsi Meet makes more sense
Jitsi Meet is a better starting point for ordinary meetings or presentations than for a course that depends on dedicated teaching tools. Its official page describes calls, screen and presentation sharing, custom meeting URLs, integrated chat, and document collaboration with Etherpad. It says an account is not needed for its offering and invites users either to try its public service or run their own instance. See Jitsi Meet.

The no-account path applies to the public offering described on that page; the experience and requirements can differ on a self-hosted instance. Jitsi’s page claims encryption by default, but security depends on the deployment and configuration. Assess the actual service you plan to use rather than generalizing a claim about one offering to every instance.

What to check before choosing
Map the teaching or meeting workflow
- List the activities you actually need: polls, breakout rooms, shared notes, whiteboards, recordings, or simple screen sharing and discussion.
- For courses, verify the specific LMS integration you use. BigBlueButton documents LTI 1.0; confirm that the current integration supports your LMS and workflow.
- Test the participant experience in the browsers and on the devices your learners or guests use. BigBlueButton documents mobile-browser access, but not mobile screen sharing.
Decide who operates the service
Open-source software can avoid a license charge for the project code, but a production service still needs hosting, bandwidth, updates, maintenance, and technical support. Self-hosting offers operational control but makes your organization responsible for those tasks. A managed service shifts some of that work to a provider, whose availability, pricing, capacity, support, and geographic coverage must be checked directly.
BigBlueButton’s project materials describe a free-tier service from Blindside Networks for edX/Open edX and advise customers using official Open edX hosting partners to ask whether those partners provide hosting. Validate scale, access, and records
- Ask a provider or test your own deployment against the number of simultaneous participants and sessions you expect; do not rely on unsourced participant caps.
- Check whether guests need accounts, what browsers are supported, and how joining works in the exact deployment.
- Confirm how recordings are created, stored, accessed, and retained, along with any organizational privacy or accessibility requirements.

- For teaching: Evaluate BigBlueButton first, then test your LMS connection, lesson activities, recordings, accessibility, and expected load.
- For simple calls and presentations: Try Jitsi Meet’s public offering or assess a self-hosted instance if you need to operate the service yourself.
- For an existing Nextcloud environment: Check Talk against your required classroom workflow rather than assuming it is a dedicated virtual-classroom replacement.
