Strong Django interview answers explain how the framework’s parts work together and when you would choose each one—not just recite definitions. Use the model answers below as starting points, then adapt them to the Django version and requirements of the project you are discussing.

What is Django?

Django is a Python web framework with connected tools for defining application data, routing requests, processing forms, and managing authentication. I would select the built-in components that fit the application and check the documentation for the Django version the project uses.

How to explain a request flow

A URL configuration (URLconf) matches an incoming path to a view. The view handles the request, may use models to access data, and returns a response. Forms can help validate submitted input, while authentication and authorization checks help control access where needed. This describes the roles of the components without claiming every application must use every built-in feature.

What are Django models and the ORM?

A model is a Python definition of application data. Django’s object-relational mapper (ORM) provides an API for querying and changing that data in a database. For ordinary data access, I would use the ORM; if a particular case calls for it, Django also permits SQL.

A useful interview answer goes beyond saying that models map to tables: describe the data and relationships the application needs, then explain how those choices support its requirements.

How do URL patterns and views work together?

A URLconf connects URL patterns to view callables. A pattern can capture a value from the path, such as an integer identifier, and can be given a name. Django calls the matched view to handle the request for that route.

For example, if a route captures a record identifier, the view can use that value to determine what response to return. Keep the explanation focused on the flow: the URL pattern matches, captured values are passed to the view, and the view handles the request.

What is the difference between function-based and class-based views?

A function-based view expresses a view as a function; a class-based view expresses it as a class. In an interview, frame the choice around the task and the team’s preferences rather than claiming one style is universally better.

  • Discuss the shape of the work: which form makes the behavior easiest for the team to follow?
  • Explain whether and how the behavior will be reused; avoid adding indirection unless it makes the implementation clearer.
  • State the trade-off you would make for the particular application and the conventions used by its team.

Be ready to explain your choice with a concrete example. The decision is about clarity and maintainability in context, not a blanket rule.

What are Django forms for?

Django forms can render HTML, validate submitted data, and convert valid values into native Python types. A ModelForm derives a form from a model and can be used to create or update model-backed records.

When describing a form flow, explain what input is accepted, how it is validated, and when the application saves the resulting data. Keep validation and persistence decisions explicit rather than treating a valid form as an automatic decision to save.

What does Django’s authentication system include?

Django includes support for user accounts, groups, permissions, and cookie-based sessions. Authentication establishes a user’s identity; authorization determines what that user may do. Explain where the application applies access checks for the relevant view or operation, and verify behavior against the documentation for the project’s Django version.

Which database should a Django application use?

Django uses SQLite by default. The Django FAQ recommends PostgreSQL for production and lists MariaDB, MySQL, SQLite, and Oracle as supported databases. The right choice depends on deployment and operational requirements, so an interview answer should first identify those requirements instead of presenting a universal workload-based ranking.

Which Python versions work with Django?

The Django FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, lists the following compatibility by Django series. It notes that Python 3.14 support was added in Django 5.2.8.

Django series Python versions listed
Django 5.2 3.10, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13, 3.14
Django 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2 3.12, 3.13, 3.14

For an interview or an upgrade plan, name the Django series rather than saying that Django supports a particular Python version in general. Confirm the exact patch series and current compatibility table before upgrading.

What is changing in Django’s release policy?

In an announcement dated August 10, 2026, Django contributor Carlton Gibson said the Steering Council had accepted DEP 20. The project plans to begin a schedule of one feature release each year in January 2028, with three years of support for each feature release. This is an announced future schedule, not a policy already in effect.

For an interview, distinguish the planned schedule from current practice and state the date and status of the announcement.

How can you make your answers stronger?

  • Explain the role of each component in the request or data flow instead of listing framework terminology.
  • Connect design choices to the application’s data, deployment, and operational needs.
  • When behavior or compatibility could depend on version, identify the Django series and check its documentation.
  • For choices such as view style or database, explain the trade-off in context rather than claiming a universal winner.
