Dual-purpose function keys are single keyboard keys that can perform two actions. Usually, pressing a key by itself triggers its primary action, while holding Fn as you press it triggers a secondary action. The exact functions and default behavior depend on the keyboard model.
What does “dual-purpose function key” mean?
It is one physical key assigned two functions, often indicated by two labels or symbols on its keycap. Lenovo calls these “dual-function keys” and describes the two actions as the primary and secondary functions. On keyboards with that arrangement, the key alone invokes the primary function; pressing it while holding Fn invokes the secondary one. How do Fn and F Lock work?
Fn commonly acts as a modifier: hold it while pressing a key to access that key’s alternate command. For some Microsoft keyboards, an F Lock key instead toggles between standard and alternate commands. Those are the controls documented for the Microsoft accessories on Microsoft’s support page; they are not universal instructions for all keyboards.

Can you change which function happens on a direct press?
Some keyboards have an Fn Lock or another control that reverses the default behavior, so the alternate function happens on a direct press and the primary one requires Fn. For example, Lenovo documents Fn+Esc as the Fn Lock toggle for the Legion 5i model generation covered by its guide. Do not assume that shortcut works on other models: a keyboard may use different software or firmware settings, or offer no user-accessible toggle.

Which functions do the keys perform?
The top-row keys often pair the F1–F12 commands with device controls or other shortcuts, but the specific mapping varies by keyboard. Logitech’s function-key explainer describes common F-key uses; it does not establish a universal mapping for every device. An action can also depend on the active application or keyboard configuration.
On HP PCs, the Fn key is hardware-controlled, according to HP’s documentation. Microsoft Surface documentation likewise explains that top-row special keys can double as function keys when Fn is used, with available keys depending on the keyboard or Type Cover model: Surface Type Cover guidance.

How to identify the right key behavior on your keyboard
- Check the keycap legends. Look for a second label or symbol that indicates the alternate action.
- Try the modifier. Hold Fn and press the key, then compare the result with pressing the key alone.
- Find the exact model’s manual or support page. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm the key mapping and any lock or toggle. Shortcuts vary by model, so do not infer them from another keyboard.
- Check the active application and configuration. If the key behaves unexpectedly, the application or device settings may affect which command it invokes.
