To change the style of text in a WhatsApp message, put formatting marks around it before sending: use *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italics, ~tildes~ for strikethrough, or three backticks on each side for monospace. WhatsApp’s Help Center also documents lists, quote blocks and inline code. These change text in a message—not the app’s overall appearance or your phone’s display size.
Format text with marks in a message
Type the opening and closing mark directly around the word or phrase. For example, enter *hello* to format “hello” in bold. The marks indicate formatting and are not part of the styled text shown in the message.
| Style | What to type | Example result |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | *text* |
text |
| Italic | _text_ |
text |
| Strikethrough | ~text~ |
|
| Monospace | ```text``` |

WhatsApp’s Help Center says, “WhatsApp allows you to format text inside your messages.” Its instructions for the four styles above are at How to format your messages. The page does not state an app version or publication date.
Make lists, quote text or format inline code
WhatsApp also documents these message formats:
- Bulleted list: Start each line with an asterisk or hyphen, followed by a space.
- Numbered list: Start each line with a number, a period and a space.
- Quote: Start the line with
>and a space. - Inline code: Put one backtick on each side of the text, as in
`text`.
These differ from monospace formatting: monospace uses three backticks on each side, while inline code uses one.

Use the formatting menu on WhatsApp Web or Mac desktop
On WhatsApp Web and Mac desktop, double-click text you have entered in the message field to select it, then choose a formatting option. The Help Center lists Bold, Italic, Strikethrough and Inline code for this menu. Its page describes the newer formatting options as available only on WhatsApp Web and Mac desktop; it does not specify an app version.
Separate message formatting from appearance and font size
“Font style” can mean several different things in WhatsApp. Formatting marks change selected text in a message. Chat colors or backgrounds are adjusted separately through appearance settings; see WhatsApp’s guide to changing app or chat style.

- Big Size Sign board in best Quality Vinyl. Strong Adhesive at the Backside. Clean the surface thoroughly before use.
- Ideal for surfaces like Metal, Plastic and smoothly oil painted wood. NOT suitable for whitewashed walls or rough wooden surface.
- Once this vinyl is taken out from one surface then its adhesive may not be strong enough for a second place. Peel and use simple plastic card, like credit card to apply it from one corner to another. This removes air pockets and gives a neat finish.
- Size: 9 x 3 in . Quantity:4 stickers (1 Facebook,1 Instagram, 1 Whatsapp) | Long life Vinyl surface. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Weather resistant.
- Please Note: These stickers can be customised. Please use a Sketch Pen/Marker Pen to fill your company/ handle name.
Changing the size of text or other display elements is different again. WhatsApp’s accessibility guidance says Android users can adjust display or font size through their phone’s settings. That changes device display size; it does not apply bold, italics, strikethrough or monospace to a particular message. See About accessibility features on WhatsApp.
