LTPS means low-temperature polycrystalline silicon. In an LTPS TFT-LCD, it describes the thin-film transistor backplane—the circuitry that controls the LCD pixels—not the liquid-crystal viewing mode or a separate kind of screen. The silicon backplane can support faster, denser circuits than an amorphous-silicon backplane, which is useful in compact, high-resolution displays.
What is an LTPS TFT-LCD?
A TFT-LCD uses thin-film transistors to control the current that sets each pixel’s brightness. In an LTPS TFT-LCD, the transistors’ active layer is made from polycrystalline silicon. Samsung Display defines LTPS as a TFT technology that improves electron mobility by modifying amorphous silicon (a-Si): Samsung Display’s Display Glossary.
The name combines two different parts of the display description: LCD identifies the liquid-crystal display, while LTPS identifies the transistor backplane technology. It is therefore more precise to call LTPS a backplane technology than a screen type on its own.

How is an LTPS backplane made?
The process begins with amorphous silicon, whose atoms lack the ordered structure of crystalline silicon. Manufacturers crystallize that material into polycrystalline silicon, commonly using laser heating. “Low temperature” is relative to high-temperature polysilicon processing. LTPS still involves heat; the term does not mean that the process is heat-free.
What does LTPS mean for display performance?
Polycrystalline silicon has greater electron mobility than amorphous silicon. In practical terms, this lets the transistor circuits switch faster and supply current more readily in a short time. It also makes it easier to arrange dense circuitry on the backplane.

Those properties can help a display achieve higher resolution and a better aperture ratio—the proportion of a pixel area available to transmit light—than an LCD with an a-Si backplane. LTPS can also allow driver circuits to be integrated into the backplane, supporting a smaller overall form factor. These are capabilities of the technology, not guarantees that every LTPS panel will outperform every other panel in color, contrast, viewing angle, or refresh rate. LTPS vs. a-Si: what is the trade-off?

LTPS vs. IPS, OLED, and LCD
These labels describe different aspects of a display, so they are not direct alternatives:
- LTPS describes the semiconductor material and process used in the TFT backplane.
- IPS describes a liquid-crystal alignment approach. It is not another name for LTPS; a panel’s IPS specification and its backplane specification answer different questions.
- LCD describes a liquid-crystal display technology.
- OLED describes a different display technology from LCD. LTPS is a backplane technology, not a synonym for either LCD or OLED.
When a listing asks “What is the difference between an IPS screen and an LTPS screen?”, the useful clarification is that IPS and LTPS are not mutually exclusive categories: one refers to liquid-crystal arrangement and the other to backplane technology. Samsung Display’s glossary and Corning’s backplane overview describe these as distinct technical dimensions.
