You can assemble an “agent operating system” from open-source components, but it is a layered assistant stack—not a single operating system or a turnkey product that automatically combines every feature. A practical starting point is OpenClaw as the gateway and agent runtime, with a messaging channel for access. Add Open WebUI if you want a browser-based chat interface, or n8n if you need explicit task records, scheduled workflows, or a custom memory pipeline.
The pieces remain separate systems that you configure and maintain. That gives you choices about interfaces, storage, and providers, but it also means you need to decide where information goes, what the agent is allowed to do, and how its memory is backed up.
What an agent operating system means in practice
OpenClaw is the most coherent center for this kind of setup: it acts as a gateway and assistant runtime that connects messaging surfaces to agents, tools, sessions, and memory. Its documentation describes it as software you run on infrastructure you control. It does not make Open WebUI or n8n mandatory; those are optional components for different needs.

- Reach: messaging apps or a browser interface provide ways to talk to the assistant.
- Run: OpenClaw routes requests to an agent and its configured tools and sessions.
- Act: permissions and integrations determine what the agent can do, including whether it can work with files, run commands, or send messages.
- Remember and schedule: workspace files, retrieval systems, and workflow tools provide persistence and recurring task logic.
These responsibilities can be split across services. Before installing anything, decide whether your priority is a conversational assistant, structured task tracking, a browser UI, voice access, or some combination. Each additional component adds configuration and maintenance.

Where should the gateway run?
OpenClaw documentation describes deployment on a Mac, Linux system, or VPS. Begin with a machine you already manage if it can stay available when you need the assistant. A dedicated home computer is optional, not a documented requirement; the reviewed material does not establish minimum CPU, memory, storage, or a tested mini PC recommendation.
The project repository describes installation paths for macOS, Linux, and Windows through WSL2, as well as a Node package route with version requirements that can change. Follow the current official installation instructions for your platform rather than relying on a copied command or a fixed runtime version in an evergreen guide. After installation, complete the project’s onboarding and gateway setup before connecting personal accounts or granting tools.
A VPS is another hosting option if you want an always-available gateway without maintaining a home machine. It changes the operational and privacy boundary: your gateway state is on that server, while model and messaging providers may receive configured data as well.
How to bring up the assistant safely
- Install OpenClaw using its current platform-specific instructions. Choose the host first, then follow the matching official setup path for macOS, Linux, or Windows/WSL2.
- Complete the initial gateway setup and inspect its access controls. The personal assistant guide uses port 18789 as an example and describes a dashboard with authentication behavior. Treat that as guide-specific configuration, not a universal port guarantee; verify the settings shown by your installed version.
- Connect one channel first. The documented personal-assistant walkthrough uses WhatsApp Web pairing. Follow the current instructions for the channel you actually intend to use, because channel support and setup differ.
- Restrict who can reach it. For the WhatsApp example, the guide recommends a dedicated assistant number and sender allowlisting rather than an unrestricted personal-account setup. Apply the equivalent access restriction supported by your chosen channel.
- Keep tools conservative during evaluation. Start with the least access you need and use the documented tool policy and sandboxing options. The setup guide warns that, depending on policy, an agent can run commands, work with workspace files, and message people on your behalf.
- Review recurring activity. In the documented setup, heartbeats default to every 30 minutes. If you do not want recurring polling while evaluating the assistant, use the current guide’s setting for disabling it.
Allowlisting and sandboxing reduce exposure; they do not make an agent risk-free. Expand access only after you understand which tools are enabled and what actions they can take.

Should you add a browser chat interface?
No, not if messaging channels are enough. OpenClaw can be used through its connected messaging surfaces. Open WebUI is an optional browser interface for people who want a dedicated chat experience or already use its supported model connections. Its documentation describes support for Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs, with Docker, Python, and desktop installation options.
Two documented ways to connect Open WebUI and OpenClaw
- Use Open WebUI as the chat frontend: connect it to OpenClaw through the API. This makes the browser interface the place you interact with the agent.
- Use an OpenClaw bot in Open WebUI Channels: let the bot participate in the channel-based interface instead of making Open WebUI the full frontend.
Choose one based on how you want to interact; the integration guide describes these as different patterns, not features that must both be enabled. Open WebUI estimates about 15 minutes for its specific integration setup, but that is the project’s estimate, not a measured setup-time guarantee.
Open WebUI’s documentation reports that, on September 28, 2026, its compressed Linux/amd64 :slim image was 176 MB compared with 1.66 GB for :main, or 89% less to download. Those figures apply to the specified architecture and images; the slimmer image expects external services for features such as voice and knowledge search. They should not be generalized to other architectures or releases.

How voice fits into the stack
Voice is a capability with several possible routes, not a promise that every channel has the same hands-free features. OpenClaw’s FAQ describes voice through companion apps or nodes and hosted widgets. Its repository says companion apps and nodes can add voice, Canvas, camera, screen, and device-local actions on supported platforms. An n8n example instead processes Telegram voice messages as part of a workflow.

Confirm voice support for the client, channel, and version you plan to use. If a feature depends on a companion app or node, the gateway alone does not establish that your chosen device has it. A workflow-based voice path also has different triggers and dependencies from voice built into a companion client.
How to make memory persistent and understandable
Persistent memory is storage plus a retrieval method; it is not unlimited recall of every conversation in every prompt. OpenClaw’s setup guide places operating instructions and memory in a workspace. Its starter files include AGENTS.md, SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, and USER.md; MEMORY.md is optional. The main-session documentation describes curated long-term memory, searchable daily notes, and memory recall across conversations under the documented configuration conditions.
That file-based approach is relatively legible: the operator can inspect workspace content and decide what to preserve. It also means files are part of the system’s durable state. Understand where the workspace lives, what is written to it, and how you will back it up before relying on it for important information.
If you need semantic retrieval across conversations, the n8n example illustrates another design: summarize conversations, create embeddings, and store them in a Supabase vector database for retrieval. That is a workflow template, not a required OpenClaw component or a guarantee that the template’s integrations remain unchanged.

When does a workflow engine make sense for tasks?
OpenClaw can provide tools and sessions, but a conversational history is not the same thing as a task ledger. If you need explicit tasks, subtasks, triggers, or scheduled work, n8n’s example shows a workflow-oriented pattern with task and subtask tables, scheduled heartbeats, and channel triggers.
Choose the simpler approach that satisfies the need:
- Use OpenClaw workspace and agent behavior when the goal is a personal assistant with instructions and file-based memory.
- Add a workflow engine when tasks need defined records, recurring triggers, or a custom sequence such as summarizing a message, saving it, and retrieving it later.
- Keep the boundaries explicit when combining them: identify which service owns task state, which stores memory, and what happens if one service is unavailable or its integration changes.
The documented examples establish implementation patterns, not controlled rankings. Compare options by channel reach, memory storage and retrieval, task scheduling, voice support, maintenance burden, and where prompts, credentials, transcripts, and files travel.

What self-hosting does—and does not—keep private
OpenClaw’s repository says state, memory, and credentials reside on the user’s hardware, and also states that prompts go to configured model providers and chat platforms. Its FAQ describes a local-model path. In practical terms, self-hosting gives you control over the gateway and local data; it does not by itself mean every prompt or message stays on the machine.

A more local configuration requires choosing local models and local channels or services where available. The reviewed documentation does not establish that every integration works offline, so verify the data path for each model and channel you enable. Treat credentials, workspace files, and transcripts as separate data categories when deciding what may leave the host.
OpenClaw describes a shared gateway as a trust domain. If household or team users may be adversarial toward one another, a single shared gateway should not be treated as isolation; the FAQ recommends separate gateways for mutually adversarial users.
A practical first version
For a manageable initial deployment, run OpenClaw on a host you control, connect one restricted messaging channel, and keep tool permissions conservative. Use the workspace files to make instructions and memory visible. Add Open WebUI only if a browser chat is useful, and add n8n only if you need structured task records or workflow-driven memory. Test each addition independently so you know which component stores data, schedules actions, and receives prompts.
