There is no single best Mac cloning app for every job. For a scheduled local clone, compare Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper!; for flexible synchronization and network or cloud destinations, consider ChronoSync; for a disk-copy workflow, Acronis True Image for Mac documents a clone utility. Apple Time Machine is a versioned backup option, not a one-to-one clone. Get Backup Pro is also included in Macworld’s comparison, but the available feature detail is too limited to recommend it without checking the current product.

Cloning copies a disk or selected data to another destination; a versioned backup keeps earlier states, synchronization keeps locations aligned, and migration moves data and settings to another Mac. These workflows overlap, but they are not interchangeable. The right answer to “What is the best Mac backup software to use for the job?” depends on which outcome you need.

How to choose Mac cloning software

Start with the recovery job, not a ranking. A one-time disk copy, a regularly updated clone, a backup with file history, and a migration to a new Mac have different requirements. Macworld’s 2025 comparison provides editorial descriptions of several tools, not a uniform test of all six options; features and compatibility may have changed since publication.

  • Choose a clone when you want a separate copy of a disk or selected data. Do not assume every clone will boot on every Mac.
  • Choose versioned backup when being able to recover an earlier version of a file matters.
  • Choose synchronization when you need to keep chosen locations aligned, possibly across network or cloud destinations.
  • Choose migration when the goal is moving data to another Mac; a backup may be part of that workflow, but is not the same thing as migration.

Before choosing, check current macOS and Apple silicon support, destination types, scheduling, file history, licensing and whether the software supports the precise recovery path you expect.

Six Mac backup and cloning options

Carbon Copy Cloner

Macworld’s 2025 comparison highlights Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) for configurable scheduling, scripting, NAS support and SafetyNet. Those features make it worth considering for people who want to tailor recurring backups or use network storage. The same comparison cautions that Apple’s restrictions can make bootable external volumes difficult. Treat that as a 2025 editorial assessment, not a guarantee about present-day behavior: verify current macOS and Apple silicon support and whether the intended destination can serve the recovery purpose you need.

SuperDuper!

Macworld describes SuperDuper! as a straightforward local cloning tool with scheduling and scripting, and reports APFS and HFS+ support in the version it reviewed. The comparison says network-volume backup was unsupported in that version. Check the current feature list, the boundary between free and paid features, and whether your task is a one-time copy or a scheduled backup before relying on it.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

ChronoSync

ChronoSync is positioned in Macworld’s comparison as a synchronization-focused tool that also supports configurable backup tasks, scheduled jobs, bootable-backup workflows and network or cloud destinations. The flexibility comes with a more complex interface. It is a fit to investigate if destination choice and synchronization matter more than a minimal cloning workflow; confirm current destination and bootability support for your Mac.

Acronis True Image for Mac

The 2026 Acronis True Image for Mac user guide documents a Clone disk utility and lists external drives or USB flash drives as possible destinations. Acronis states that the destination’s total capacity must be more than 10% greater than the amount of used data on the source disk. This is an Acronis-specific rule, not a general requirement for cloning software. Check the current edition, compatibility and workflow support for your Mac before starting.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Apple Time Machine

Time Machine is Apple’s built-in incremental backup, not a one-to-one disk clone. Macworld describes it as working with Migration Assistant, which can make it useful when backup and moving data to another Mac are part of the same plan. Consider it when you want a backup alternative with earlier file states; consult Apple’s current restore and migration instructions for the exact recovery path.

Get Backup Pro

Macworld includes Get Backup Pro in its comparison, but the available description does not establish enough about its features to make a strong recommendation. Before choosing it, verify that the current product supports your macOS version, performs the kind of cloning you need, and has licensing and pricing that suit you.

Rank #4

Can a cloned external drive start a Mac?

Not necessarily. Apple Support’s guidance, published October 2, 2026, says an external USB or Thunderbolt storage device can be used as a Mac startup disk after macOS is installed on it. That establishes a supported external-startup setup, not a guarantee that any third-party clone will boot in every configuration. Apple also says the macOS installation on external storage is specific to the Mac model, so do not assume it will start a different model.

There is an important Apple silicon limitation: the Mac needs a working built-in startup disk to start from external storage. An external startup disk therefore cannot, by itself, replace a failed internal startup disk on Apple silicon. Treat a bootable external setup as one recovery option, not a complete recovery plan.

Choose and format an external drive

An external SSD is a reasonable companion for a Mac backup or startup-disk workflow, but the cited guidance does not establish a particular brand, model, capacity or performance winner. Size the destination for the data and backup history you intend to retain, then check the selected app’s capacity rules.

For an external startup disk, Apple recommends APFS, especially for an SSD. Apple also accepts Mac OS Extended (Journaled), often called HFS+, for traditional hard drives; that format is required for macOS Sierra 10.12 or earlier. Follow Apple’s guidance for the macOS version and use case, and verify that the backup app supports the chosen format.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Define the result. Decide whether you need a clone, file history, synchronization or migration.
  2. Check the Mac. Confirm the current app supports your macOS version and whether its external-startup behavior applies to your Mac model and chip.
  3. Check the destination. Confirm local, NAS, network or cloud support as applicable, along with enough capacity for the source data and any retained history.
  4. Set the schedule and retention. Decide how often the job should run and whether the tool preserves earlier versions or simply mirrors current data.
  5. Verify recovery separately. Confirm how to restore files or start from the backup under your configuration; do not infer bootability merely because a clone operation completed.
