Per-episode adaptive thresholds are a defensible way to detect low-motion spans when robot episodes differ in motion scale or noise. The label is operational, not semantic: a small change in recorded actions may mark a frame as idle even when the robot is intentionally holding or waiting. No source reviewed establishes that adaptive thresholds outperform a single global threshold, or documents the original authors’ decision history, so the rationale here is a design argument rather than a claim about a measured advantage.

What does “idle” mean in a robot dataset?

Idle detection classifies frames or transitions as having little motion according to a selected signal and rule. It does not determine whether a moment is useful, whether the robot is doing nothing, or whether a task should have included that moment.

One practical signal is the change between successive recorded action vectors. A threshold applied to the size of that change can identify low-change transitions. The result depends on what the vectors represent, their units or normalization, the noise in the recording, and whether the intended target is stationary behavior, pauses, or some other category.

This distinction matters for intentional holds and waits: a robot may remain nearly stationary while completing a meaningful task step. A low-motion label alone cannot tell those frames from unwanted pauses.

How can a per-episode threshold be estimated?

A secondary technical explainer describes this workflow: difference consecutive action vectors, compute the L2 magnitude as a per-step motion measure, and inspect the episode’s motion-value distribution for a gap that could separate low-motion from active transitions. If its bimodal-gap procedure does not find a suitable threshold, the explainer describes a median absolute deviation (MAD)-based fallback. This is an account of an implementation, not independent evidence that the estimator is calibrated or best for a particular dataset. RDA’s technical explainer (September 19, 2026)

  1. Choose and document the signal. For example, specify whether motion comes from action-vector differences or state changes, and record the units or normalization.
  2. Compute one motion value per transition. With action differencing, this can be the L2 magnitude of the difference between consecutive vectors.
  3. Estimate the episode’s cutoff. A distribution-gap rule may be considered when the episode’s values support a low-motion/active separation.
  4. Define the fallback and flag weak cases. If the distribution does not support the assumed separation, report the fallback used—such as the MAD-based rule described by the explainer—and flag the episode for review.
  5. State what the output labels. Clarify whether a label belongs to a frame or a transition, and whether the procedure finds idle spans throughout an episode or only trims its beginning and end.

Why use a separate threshold for each episode?

A global cutoff is simple and consistent, but it can classify episodes differently when their recorded motion scales or noise floors differ. An episode-specific cutoff can adapt to those differences rather than applying one numeric boundary everywhere. That is a design rationale, not a demonstrated performance result: the available sources do not provide a controlled comparison showing that adaptive thresholds are more accurate than a global threshold.

Adaptation also has limits. An episode with little or no active motion may not contain a clear distributional separation, while a noisy episode or one with many brief pauses may make a cutoff unstable or misleading. Threshold choice remains sensitive to task rhythm, signal representation, and the meaning assigned to “idle.”

How do idle labels fit into dataset workflows?

Episode-level active ranges can help identify usable task spans or exclude stationary boundaries during downstream processing. The RoboInter-Data resource documents per-episode non-idle frame ranges and shows an example in which idle or stationary frames are excluded at the beginning and end. That demonstrates a concrete dataset workflow, but it does not establish that the resource uses the same threshold estimator described above. RoboInter-Data dataset page

Idle detection also appears as a temporal-sufficiency analysis in the versioned robot-data-audit 0.9.14 package description. That establishes it as one kind of audit, not a shared algorithm or a universal quality standard.

How should you interpret an idle ratio?

An idle ratio is a review signal, not a verdict on dataset quality. A high value can prompt investigation of task design, intentional holds, teleoperation pauses, or recording boundaries; the percentage by itself cannot identify which explanation applies.

For example, a user-submitted LeRobot issue dated September 15, 2026 reports an audit of 50 episodes and 11,939 frames from one dataset. The submitter’s tool run reported a median effective-motion figure of 13.3%, corresponding in that report to 86.7% of frames showing minimal state change. These are results for that dataset and audit, not an official dataset-owner statistic or a general baseline. LeRobot issue #4650

A separate secondary explainer reports a tool-run audit of 300 episodes from one named dataset with a median idle ratio of 65.6%. This figure is likewise dataset-specific and is not an independently verified benchmark. RDA’s technical explainer

What alternatives should you consider?

Approach Potential strength Question to check
One global threshold Uses the same numeric cutoff across episodes, making the rule straightforward to state. Do episodes have sufficiently similar motion scales and noise floors for one cutoff to behave consistently?
Per-episode adaptive threshold Can accommodate differences in scale or noise between episodes. Does each episode have enough active motion and a usable distributional separation to support its own cutoff?
Threshold with temporal persistence Can avoid treating every brief near-zero observation as a stop. What duration or persistence rule matches the task, and does it preserve meaningful short pauses?

Thresholding with a persistence condition is also described in work on optical-flow motion boundaries for human motion in a human-robot interaction setting. That is an adjacent design consideration, not validation of the method for robot-dataset idle detection. Quick Recap

What should an idle-detection report include?

  • The motion signal, units, and any normalization.
  • The threshold rule, including how it is estimated for an episode.
  • The fallback used when the episode does not support the assumed distributional separation.
  • Whether labels apply to frames or transitions, and whether all idle spans or only boundary spans are identified.
  • How ambiguous episodes and intentional holds are reviewed against task context or source recordings.
  • The collection and task context needed to interpret the resulting idle ratio.
