Firefly III can make budgeting easier by bringing transactions into your workflow, but it does not connect directly to every bank. You can import a statement file such as CSV or CAMT.053, or use a separate bank-data provider where your bank and country are supported. File imports require initial setup; once configured, the same file format can be handled repeatedly.
How bank transactions reach a Firefly III budget
Firefly III’s Data Importer handles transaction intake; budget management happens within Firefly III. Importing transactions does not itself create a budget. The imported activity gives you transaction data to organize and use in your budgeting workflow.
There are two distinct routes: load an exported statement file, or authorize an external service that retrieves bank data. The importer documentation is explicit: “The data importer does not connect to your bank directly.” Firefly III Data Importer documentation
Choose between a statement file and a bank-data provider

Firefly III’s tutorial describes Enable Banking as covering more than 2,500 banks across 29 European countries. That is a provider-coverage figure cited by the tutorial, not a current guarantee for a particular bank. Confirm your country and institution with the provider before choosing this route. Set up a statement-file import
For a CSV import, the main task is telling the importer how to interpret the file. The exact column names and file layout vary by bank, so inspect the export rather than assuming that a preset will match it.
- Check the file. Determine whether it includes a header row, which delimiter separates fields, what date format it uses, and what each column represents.
- Configure the file format. In the Data Importer, set the headers, encoding if needed, delimiter, and date format.
- Map the columns. Assign the relevant columns to transaction roles such as date, description, and amount. Provide a default asset account if the file does not contain enough information to identify one.
- Choose import options. Decide whether to apply existing rules, add tags, and use duplicate handling.
- Validate, then import. The importer converts and validates the data before the actual transaction import. Review the result before completing it.
The importer supports CAMT.053 as well as CSV, but each format still requires a compatible file and appropriate configuration. Consult the Data Importer documentation for the currently supported options and details.

Reuse the setup for future files
A successful first import can establish a reusable JSON configuration. The command-line importer can apply that configuration to later files from the same bank when their structure remains unchanged. The documentation also describes directory-based import routines. This makes repeat imports more consistent, but it is not the same as an automatic bank sync: you still need the files and a configured process. Firefly III Data Importer documentation

After transactions are in Firefly III, use them in the budgeting workflow rather than treating the import as the budget itself. Firefly III’s budgeting guide documents a calendar-month cadence, from the first through the last day of each month. What to check before choosing a route
- Can your bank export a format the Data Importer supports?
- If you prefer a bank connection, does the external provider currently support your country and institution?
- For files, can you identify the delimiter, date format, and meaning of each relevant column?
- Will a saved configuration remain valid if your bank changes its export format?
Bank-provider coverage and importer capabilities can change. Check the current documentation and provider availability for your bank before building a workflow around either option.
